  1. I've bought, sold, and traded nearly 80 of the Smart diesels in the USA and here's the best advice I can give. If you are looking at purchasing from Canada, the car must be purchased on US soil and that's a huge must. Otherwise, it will never get through regular customs because it is not possible to get these cars fully DOT Safety and EPA emissions compliant for import. But a purchase on US soil does give it some gray area. There are a handful of states that will transfer a Canadian title to a US title. Ohio used to be one of them but they recently changed the laws on that. But even with a US title, it will be nearly impossible to get a CA title without the right connections. I do know of at least two California residents who set up LLC's in other states like Montana (no sales tax and they have companies that specialize in settling up LLC's just for cars). Hope that helps. Could probably write a book on the process but honestly burned out by the whole thing. Smart Car Rob.
  2. I have a star machine and in Ohio too. I can possibly come up from Columbus and reset the transmission/clutch. Just give me a call. Rob (614) 758-7524
  3. Thanks for all the helpful advice. Strangely after it warmed up to about -8, I went out and moved the gearshift lever around and this time it did slip from 1st to N. Still not sure how it ended up in 1st to begin with seeing as N or R are the only two selections to make to remove the key. But works fine now.
  4. Has anyone experienced this? Woke up this morning and at -22 wasn't sure if my Smart would start. It didn't, but the reason is hard to figure out. When I turned the key, I noticed the transmission indicated 1st gear and of course it won't start in first gear. It's strange because I know for a fact that when I parked it last night, it was in "N". In fact, we can't even get the key out of the ignition if left in 1st. So I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen to them before. I thought maybe the clutch actuator may be frozen but then wouldn't it be frozen in "N" and not "1"? Very peculiar. Waiting for it to warm up outside to see if by chance something is just frozen.
  5. awwww... just noticed you are not in the GTA. I suppose I could ship them to you but as cheap as they are, I would just replace them while you have the axles out. Rob
  6. I have extra rings I could let go for $6 each. Rob 647-745-7883 . I'm in Mississauga.
  7. I have ordered many alternators for various Smart cars from Rare Electrical of Atlanta, GA. If you use eBay, check out item # 370686582170. It's by far the best price I have found anywhere. Shipping to Canada is about $40.
  8. I have a 2006 Smart 450 stranded in Florida right now with the dreaded 3 bar issue. I did the research and it looks as though there could be a huge number of different problems that could be going on here. The only way I can seem to temporarily get the bars to go away is to disconnect the battery for about a half hour, tape the 2 cables together, then reconnect. I'm hoping that with the following codes, someone might be able to better diagnose this........P2403 Gear shift operation had to be repeated. MalfunctionP2402 Transmission: Function FailureP2400 Transmission Blockage 1: Electrical FailureP2401 Transmission Blockage 2: Mechanical FailureP1704 Clutch system fault: Clutch does not separateP2414 M18 Coupling Motor EOBD
  9. Hello,Just drove my '05 Smart Fortwo last night and noticed the seat no longer slides forward and backward. Very relunctant to use too much force on the seat or do any pounding for fear of setting off the airbags. Any ideas? The track looks to be well lubricated already.
  10. It did include shipping but I later received an invoice for another $8 for VAT. Rrrrrrrrrrr. But still, for a new intercooler, a very good price compared to the stealership.
  11. It's $175.89 US www.wanapart.co.uk/ just bought one last week.
  12. germanparts.ca proved to be the cheapest I could find for the water pump. Thanks for the tip.
  13. Definitely a rare car in the USA. This particular Smart is equipped with power windows, power locks and keyless entry. Mechanically, car runs flawlessly. 147K miles. While on a gas motor, the mileage may be a bit excessive, not such a major deal on a diesel. This car does not leak oil, smoke, and starts right up on very cold mornings. This car is definitely more then capable of doing a cross country trip. Car has a free/clear Pennsylvania title and registration. Asking $8,500 obo. 321-246-5404 Tony
  14. Greetings. I understand that just before failure of the water pump, it will develop a small leak. Apparently this has just started. I'm looking for a replacement and hoping to save from buying one from a dealership. I noticed on eBay, I can get one shipped out of the UK for about $56 but unfortunately cannot wait that long for the shipping. Any thoughts where I can get one in the GTA? Is it safe to buy a used one then purchase just the gasket from the dealer?
