  1. I need to replace the vinyl rear window on ours it has been opaque for quite a few years and now has cracked. ;-( The vinyl seems to be glued/bonded to the stitched in surround, has anyone tried to remove it without cutting the stitched in part (using heat/ solvent/whatever) and if so what did they use, and did the replacement glue into place. Thanks!
  2. Thanks everyone! I've looked at the video, and read Francesco's post, I'm not sure how to 'order' a replacement rear part with glass cover from Germany however, I can't find any email address. Is no one in Canada doing something similar?
  3. We don't normally open the rear half of our 450 Cabriolet soft top, but today did to get a big box in the back. The plastic window has been so opaque that I haven't been able to look through it for a while, but now I can since it snapped into pieces when it was folded with the cover! ;-) How do we go about getting it replaced or is there a better option? It is now filled with that Candian 'Classic', 'tuck tape' and is back to no-see-through, but it would be nice to know if there is a way or company that can replace it! Thanks, Colin

  5. Thanks everyone... I had looked at that receptical pictured by Leadwing, when we first got the car and since it looks like it has 3 pin European XLR (Cannon) male hadn't thought more about it, just thought 'that's wierd'.... I've only seen those on ballanced lead pro audio equipment, though I know there are 240v power versions on audio kit in Europe. And, after topping up all the battery cells with distilled water, it has been on charge for about 6 hours, the charger still says it isn't charged, so I'll leave it on overnight and see. I'm expecting it may just be a dead cell now, so if anyone can recomend a replacement battery (or size/type) that I can get at my local 'Canadian Tyre' tomorrow I'd appreciate the help.
  6. Thanks Mike... I removed the battery and then the 6 access plugs, and one cell has no water in view, I can see the top of the plates.. So I'm off to get some distilled water, top up all 6 cells and then try to charge it.. The previous owner says he has the radio code 'somewhere' hopefully he will find it! ;-) BTW sitting under the carpet/foam cover and on top of the battery is a black cable with a female 110v outlet on the end. It looks 'factory' (?) but what the heck is it for and where is the male end?
  7. I just realized I don't have a code for the radio.. If I remove the battery will I need one to reenable the radio? I'm wary of connecting the charger to the battery without first disconecting the battery from the car, but is it OK to charge the battery while still connected to and in the car?
  8. Normally our 450 starts fine after week(s) of not being used, but we just returned after 10 days away, and, the battery is flat. I jump started it from another vehicle fine, drove for about 20 miles, stopped at a shop, won't start. I still had the jump leads in the car (phew) so got a jump, drove home and left it running for an hour. Turned it off, left it overnight, this morning flat battery again. As per my earlier post, the check engine light has been on for a week or so before we went away, and I had concluded it was a glow plug fault, but since Merc Kelowna is several hours drive away, hadn't managed to get it there. I'm going to pull the battery out and put it on a charger as a first step and see if it takes/holds charge, if it doesn't I'll fit a new battery, but if the battery seems OK what should be my next check? I wonder is it possible that a glow plug is actually permanently on? That would presumably cause the battery 'drain' while we were away. Thanks for any advice,
  9. Thanks, but no, not a Typo, P02000 "Undocumented Code" is what was on the computer reader's screen.. The car is now booked in to Mercedes in Kelowna for next week, I'll report back what they find/say/do.. (After, I suspect, I've robbed my wife's piggybank, and raided the kid's college fund .. ;-)
  10. Took the car to the local repair shop today, their machine read 2 codes: P02000 "Undocumented Code" P1482 "Glow Plug Failure Cyl #1" I also noted that turning the engine on today gave a -83 code in the odometer, strange that it was -71 only 2 days ago if it is days elapsed! ? Around freezing this morning, car started fine, ran lumpy for a few seconds (cold cylinder?) then ran fine. After reading various posts here about changing the glow plugs, I think I'll make the 2 hr drive to Mercedes in Kelowna and have them replace all 3.. Thanks, Colin
  11. Thank you.. I'll wait 'till I can get it read, hopefully on Monday.
  12. Last oil change was only 2,200m ago.. It only gets driven for short local trips. I guess my local service place can pull the OBDC code on Monday, they are 10 mins drive away. Is there a 'Smart specific' diagnosis listing anywhere that would help identify the problem, and, if it is glow plug related show which one? Thanks again, Colin
  13. Thank you.. We've been using a local garage for service, oil changes etc, they last had it 'in' for an oil change and check up before the winter started, I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but if it was yours would you drive it or trailer it to Merc for a sevice and check up?
  14. Hi, My wife came home last night in her 450 diesel, and told me that the check engine light was on. I started it up and noticed that as well as the check engine light showing, the glow plug symbol stayed on for several seconds AFTER the engine started ( ambient temp is well above 0 degs C here), and I saw that the Km display was showing -73 rather than the km . I pushed the button on the instrument cluster and the -73 disappeared, and the Km appeared, further pushing swapped to elapsed trip Km and temp (+8 degs). I've tried checking everywhere here for a similar situation but no joy. Does this description help anyone diagnose the problem, (my nearest Merc dealer is several hours away, and I'm not sure if it 'safe' to drive it there), or the meaning of the displayed "-73". Any thoughts would be welcome! Thank you,
  15. Although I took our 450 to the Kelowna Smart Car dealership for a new key when we got it s/h 3 years ago, and have bought various parts there over the years since, I have had no 'recall' notice relating to door latches. Neither have we had any problems with the existing latches. Has Merc Kelowna actually contacted any owners we know off?
