  1. car2go North American has announced this week that it will be expanding its car sharing operations in the US and Canada over the summer. The wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation is aiming to make urban mobility more widely available, convenient and flexible than ever. Operations will officially start on July 28 in Miami, Florida; but before then on June 30 in Toronto and on July 21 in Calgary. car2go, which was developed just four years ago, provides over 4,000 fuel-efficient smart fortwo vehicles to over 100,000 members around the world. Cumulatively, more than two million trips have been taken by the scheme’s members in 11 cities around the globe, with the number of cities, members and trips having doubled in the last six months. In North America, car2go already has a big network of between 200 and 300 fuel-efficient smart fortwo cars. Members can pick up and drop off the vehicles anywhere within the Home Area. The cars can be driven for as long they are needed, parked at the destination and then the rental ended with a swipe of the member’s card. Members can pay by the minute, hour or day; and the rates are inclusive of parking fees, insurance, fuel and maintenance. The vehicles can be reserved or members can drive the first one they come across or find nearest to them using the car2go smartphone app. Members can also phone the customer call centre for help finding a smart fortwo vehicle. They have unlimited and unrestricted access to car2go vehicles all day, every day. Anyone who wants to become a member of the car2go car sharing scheme can register for free with the $35 one-time fee waived and get 30 minutes of driving time free for a limited period via promotion codes for the each city. The websites and codes for each city are as follows: Miami.car2go.com, HEAT; Toronto.car2go.com, TDOT; Calgary.car2go.com, ONWARD. Bodo Uebber, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Daimler Financial Services and member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG, says more people will have access to a totally new form of auto-mobility as car2go continues is expansion throughout the US, Canada and the world. The success of the car sharing scheme across the globe up to now shows that they are in a time when new mobility solutions are needed in urban areas. Daimler is at the the forefront of the call, he added. car2go North America president and chief executive Nicholas Cole says that they are proud to continue expanding the brand throughout the US and Canada this summer. Soon, the cities of Miami, Toronto and Calgary will have access to the unprecedented convenience and flexibility of the car2go way of car sharing. The people living, working and visiting these cities will join the over 50,000 car2go members across the continent who have access to their services each day. The scheme will become a recognisable part of every new city they enter, as well as be a fundamental part of the daily lives of their people, he added.

  10. http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2...d-in-march.html Smart is close to announcing when it will begin customer deliveries of its ForTwo ED battery-electric city commuter car, a spokesman for the company said today, and a British blog is reporting that a convertible version of the vehicle will debut in Geneva in March. SmartUSA Director of Communications told Green Car Advisor that the announcement regarding the 250 ForTwo EDs Smart that will be available for lease in the U.S. will come "in very short order" and that it is still possible for people to sign up for the lease program. "Some of the 250 that will be available for lease have not been spoken for, so folks that are interested are encouraged to sign up now," he said. They can do it by visiting a Smart dealership or through a page on Smart's Website. People who lease one of the 250 two-seaters, which will pack second-generation technology, will have first crack at buying or leasing the third-generation ForTwo EDs, when they become available for purchase in 2012. So, if you're thinking you'd like to be one of the first Americans to own a gen-3 electric-drive Smart ForTwo, you should consider signing up to lease a gen-2 ForTwo ED now. The natural follow-up to a ForTwo Ed would be a convertible version of the vehicle, and parent company Daimler plans to unveil such a model at the Geneva Auto Show, the British blog Autocar reported today. The ragtop will be called the Speedster. Nice. What's not so nice is that Daimler, according to Autocar, is saying it will be shown as a pure concept car, meaning the German automaker has no intention of manufacturing a production version. What you see here is a drawing Daimler submitted for the model for patent purposes. Daimler's U.S. spokesperson, Julia Henri, could not immediately confirm the report and due to the time difference between the U.S. and Germany won't likely be available to confirm or deny the report before Tuesday.

  12. Sunday, January 2, 2011 , Posted by Admin at 12:43 AM Back in 2001 at the Geneva Motor Show, Smart introduced a quirky roadster concept with no doors, no roof and no windscreen called the Crossblade. The Fortwo Cabrio-based concept eventually went into a limited series production the following year with Smart offering a total of 2,000 cars. Fast-forward to today, and Smart appears to be readying a spiritual successor to the Crossblade as the firm's parent company Mercedes-Benz has trademarked these designs drawings of a two-seater roadster model.Unlike the original Crossblade, which came without doors featuring instead steel safety bars at passenger shoulder height that swing upwards with the help of a gas-operated struts, the roadster model seen in these pictures gets a conventional set of doors. It also features a larger wind deflector surrounding the driver and passenger as well as Smart's trademark Tridion Safety Cell - albeit redesigned to look like separate safety bars.Unfortunately, the patent filing does not provide any information on the vehicle other than that the designs were submitted on November 16, 2010. However, unless it's a previous study we're not aware of, we'd say the car seen here is a new concept model (maybe for Detroit in January or Geneva in March) that could preview a production vehicle as well as the styling of the next generation Smart Fortwo series.
