OK then... What would you guys/gals say should be the price on that vehicle? We have a $9,100 (which I personally think might be too much, but I am the n00b here)
-
This is what I call a dedicated community announcement. Would on you!

I think dealers price cars so they can remove $2K right of the top, to make you feel you are getting a deal.In any case... I don't WANT to buy it. This would be the very first Smart I ever look at and drive. A reference point if you will.I'll report back my impressions once I know more, although they'll be those of a complete n00b.

Well... Asking price is $10,480.00 before taxes.Yeah, I think it is too much. IMHO, bilgladstone had a more reasonable view and even then, I would have called that a negotiating price.Still... As I have yet to drive one, so I probably will go to see it sometime this week.

thank you for the good laugh

Hello all,First of, thank you for all the help you've already extended to me in a few threads. I've been reluctant to introduced myself as I was not sure if I would buy a Smart, and still don't know for sure.My name is Lito (Gabriel, actually), and I am from Ottawa.I am the proud owner of a summer 1979 Fiat Spider and a winter 1991 Mercedes 190E. However, after turning 50, I began to think I need less cars and more reliability. Don't get me wrong, both the Fiat and the Merc have been great and solid, but, the age of the cars (and mine) are starting to show the wear here and there and I'm thinking that an 08/09/10 Smart will give me the confidence required to make the odd trip to Montreal or Toronto, without worrying about reliability. It looks like this is a great friendly group and I have already found useful info. Glad to have joined regardless of my future car hunt.Cheers,Lito

Cheers KurtMan!If I do, it'll be a regular gas version, as I do few short trips and not many long distance ones. Great knowing I will not be alone

I am now browsing the different versions and years of this car (451), and find many more options and better prices in Montreal than I see here in Ottawa.I guess this could very well be due to condition, but it looks more like a numbers game (many more available in Quebec for what I can see).Anyone has any experience with this? Maybe more salt in Montreal's roads? Hard to plate the car in Ontario if bought in Quebec?

I've only seen one once in Monaco. I wish I could have one here in Canada. It would feel like the logic replacement for my 79 Fiat Spyder.
-
Lol... The Fiat is 70% showroom, and IF it goes it is going to go to a friend who has wanted it for the last 10 years, so I know it'll go to a good home and will stay on the road. Mechanically is in great shape.ByWard Market Ottawa, 2 cars (3 including wife's), isn't working very well ;)And TBH, since my Fiat mechanic/friend semi-retired, I can't deal with the bigger bits of maintenance on my own. I don't have a shop and my experience is limited.

That is wonderful Mike! Thanks a million!!!

Thank you both! All good points. Now a few of my own... I would buy used because the price difference, taxes included, is quite significant. It also makes a difference on insurance costs.Secondly, 0.9% is really great, but as I would be replacing cars, I can buy cash by topping what I'll get from my previous rides, therefore, 0.0% interest ;)I am sorry about what I've read above re: dealers though, because if I was to bother going out of province (meaning as far as Montreal), I don't think I would have dealt with with individual sellers as this could be a hassle. Gatineau is a different story, but I don't really want to drive 200 Km every time I want to go check out a car. It would probably influence my decision too much as I would rush into a purchase (I know myself too well) :PIf there are other opinions out there, please let me have them!

Hello all! I have been enjoying reading a few threads in this portion of the forum, and decided to post my first for help.I am from Ottawa, and I am in the market for a new used car. I am looking at Smarts as an option, but need a little advise.First, a quick look around auto trader seems to show that age and km don't seem most relevant when it comes to price. They seem to range from $6.5K to 9.5K for anything 2006 to 2009, with anything from 50K to 120K km. Which would you consider more important? age or millage? Is there a "better year"? Is there a (reasonable) limit to millage before they die?I have also read in other threads that it is a car that requires much TLC… Do you guys mean, more than the average car? (say… a Toyota Corolla for sake of argument). When it comes to self maintenance I'm OK at the little things, but I am neither knowledgeable nor equipped for serious work. Let's say I can do from cosmetic all the way up to brakes, but I rather have a mechanic do the last. With help I can find a problematic relay, but I would not replace an exhaust gasket on my own.As well (and for what I've read this might be problematic), I don't drive a lot. A handful of 1/2 hour trips a week, with, maybe, a couple of hour long drives a weekend a month. For a little background, currently I have a 1979 Fiat Spyder summer drive, and a 1991 Mercedes 190E winter car. The first I've worked on because it was so easy!!! and the last I'm driving into the ground (which was the plan from day one). So, if I get a Smart it'll become an all year-round daily driver. Thanks in advance for all the help! I am sure I will have many more questions.Cheers,Lito

rear reluctor rings I had to google that, and found (what I think is) a great link! http://www.evilution.co.uk/453

Superb! Are there any other issues to look for that are common knowledge? Such as... belts that should have been replaced after xxxx kilometres, fluids that are unique to this vehicle and should have been maintain only with oem, specific areas that are particularly sensitive to salt and rot, etc.Oh, yes... and what is the average life for these cars (engine, I guess). For example, I know that with regular maintenance my 190 would be good for over 250K kilometres without any trouble.

I just wanted to say that I was looking for exactly this type of info and I am very grateful someone posted it! Cheers

Huronlad, if the 08/09 has had the clutch updated, would you then consider them the same as a later model?PS. I am learning a lot in this thread!!! Thank you guys and gals!

Great! Is this a dealer only operation? Just curious, as I feel more comfortable with 1s and 0s than with a wrench

I see... So, A) go for 2008 or newerB) if at all possible, extended warrantyC) 2011 has better tranny (no standard tranny available?)I was hoping to find something for about $7.5K, Nor realistic then, I guess.
