  8. Hybrid not as Cost Effective as People Think According to Edmunds.con, a popular online buyers' guide for new vehicles, U.S. consumers looking to save money at the pump by purchasing a hybrid vehicle may not find the financial relief they expected. "While some people buy hybrid cars because they appreciate the enviromental benefits and enjoy advanced technology, consumers looking to solely to save money at the gas pump need to carefully research the actual cost of owning and operating a hybrid," stated Edmunds.com Consumer Editor Phil Reed. The benefits of owning a hybrid vehicle include lower maintenance expenses, fewer gas purchases and a possible federal tax credit. However, according to Edmunds.com, the high sale prices, insurance costs and related expenses of hybrids will offset the savings. In the first five years of ownership, a hybrid can cost as much as an estimated $5,200 more than its non-hybrid counterpart. Analysts found that gas will have to cost about $5.60 per gallon for hybrid drivers to break even if they drove 15,000 miles a year over five years. Consumers could break even if they drive at least 37,000 miles per year at the current average gas price of $2.28. However, the analysts at Edmunds predicted that the cost differential is likely to decrease as the technology used in hybrids matures and becomes more mainstream. Currently hybrids make up less then 1% of the market share. When analysts compared the operating costs of the Toyota Prius (hybrid) and the Toyota Camry (non-hybrid) over a projected five-year span, the cost of the Prius was only $81.
  9. Hi, Typically most production cars comes with linier rate springs. That is the stiffness of the spring is the same throughout it's travel. The shorter, so call (sport springs) that we promote have a progressive rate coil on the rear. Although it is a firmer spring in general; the tighter initial wound gives a more cushionie ride to over come most road breaks. The overall stiffer rate is to compensate the shortened height. With the stiffer final coils, and lower center of gravity, this will give the smart improved handling (less lean/roll) left to right; reduced hose dive when brake and squat during accleration. I am running a special on this product right now. Including the special tool that need to remove the front strut for DIY. Being said. I have the opportunity to own both generation of Canadian smart fortwo. Pre January 2005 and a post January car. I have my hands on close to 100 and have lowered about two dozen by myself. The later cars have a much better riding comfort compare to the earlier ones. Both on my own and customer's cars. Shock valving and spring rate specs must have been altered to suite our road. Most cabrios have better riding quality then coupe in both situations. Hope this information will help.
