Well, I have had both my doors on two separate occasions, one in the summer and the other very recently in the cold weather not latch at all. It starts off small until it gets to the point that there is no way to latch the doors closed. They have been fixed (for now). However, now that I know that other ppl are experiencing the same thing I know that this is not an isolated incident. Yes, this is a mercedes flaw. Mercedes has many flaws with their vehicles that they don't want the public to know about. I have learned this recently. This isn't something to be taken lightly. This is a safety hazzard! The shocking thing to me is that I have gone to the MTO website and found that there are no known re-calls on the smart. But at the same time, Mercedes has been know to compensate their customers so as not to let the public know they have problems. Rolls Roice (forget how to spell that one) does the same thing. However, I am doing a further investigation on this. Thanks guys!! -
I would like to know if any other smart owners have experienced their doors not latching closed. I drive a 2005 smart. I bought my smart used and I have owned it for a year and a half. I have a record history of my smart and it's very well taken car of (including with the previous owner).I have experienced both my passenger door and my driver door not latching shot, simply bouncing off the car. I have taken my car into Mercedes on for both doors on two seperate occasions. The passenger door, Mercedes simply re-adjusted the latch and lubricated the passenger and for the driver door, I had to have the latching system completely replaced.I would like to know if any other smart owners (specifically for the smart 2005 - 2007) have experienced this. I doubt very highly that the new smarts ( 2008 - present) have experienced this serious safety issue, however, I would be very interested to know if anyone has had their door malfunction on them.Again, My car is very well maintained and I have not had any major issues with it thus far, except for the doors not latching. I am sure that if it's happened to my car, it must be happening to other smart cars as well.Mercedes cars are supposed to built in a way that their doors remain closed in an accident. Now, I did not have an accident, this is a malfunction. My Mercedes garage has denied this "incident" ever happening to any of their other smart customers ... however, it's an issue that I'm taking to head office and the MTO as well simply because it's very serious safety issue.Needless to say, when I do get another car . . . I've certainly changed my mind in getting another smart or any Mercedes for that matter. Not at all impressed and rather upset and shocked,CSG

I love my smart! I've owned it for over a year and it's a 2005 and it's fun to drive around. Lately though, I was driving and a transport truck drove passed me while on the road and through a pebble at my smart. It was a small pebble, but the sound of the impact was very loud and alarming. The pebble took out a gaping hole in the front grill. I was able to remove the grill and find the broken pieces and the pebble inside. I fixed the pieces back on the grill (ok, my bf did all this). My only one big complaint about the smart now is that the shell is made of plastic whereas if it were metal, then I would just have to tap out the dent rather than hoping like heck the pieces are still hidden behind the grill on the ledge or paying Mercedes to replace the grill. One of those things one may not think of until a situation arises.

Yikes, I'm sorry I forgot about the question of long distance traveling. I don't have any issues with driving my smart long distance. Actually, all of the driving I do is long distance. I find the ride very comfortable and pretty smooth too. My former car did have cruise control, which I had gotten used to, but after I got past that and really got into driving my smart (which didn't take very long at all), I didn't have any issues with not having the cruise control while driving my smart. It's great for local and distance driving!! :-)CSG

Hmm, how does one become a "regular member"? Do I have to post and "x" of no. of replies/posts? Is there are length of time one has to be a member at which this takes place? CSG

I live in Southern Ontario and we get some pretty bad snow storms here. Actually, to be exact, I live in the Northern most tip of Southern Ontario where the heart of the snow belt is and the Winters can be pretty brutal here. I agree, you need to get the most aggressive snow tires x4 (not all season) that you can find and the more money you're willing/able to put out, the better the tread/grip. And I also agree, I have found that if the snow is higher than the base of the car, you won't be able to drive your smart through it. And again, I agree . . . caution and experience are a big help. In the snow, give your self extra space to slow down when heading toward a stop sign or traffic lights and also keep a bigger space between you and the vehicle in front of you because when the person in front of you brakes, the smart ABS in the snow depending on how much snow is on the ground can be a blessing or a nightmare. Yes, caution and experience ... I agree, very important.

Hello,I would welcome you in French but when I was in school, they didn't teach us conversational French, so aside from the basics, I wouldn't even know where to begin.I am new here too. I like your car. The one to the left in gray/black is mine and I just got the windows tinted. I'm not a big fan of the sun, so the tint really helps in reducing the sun's rays.Take Care,CSG

Well ... I've never been good with numbers. See though . . . I wasn't making it up, there is/was a site called, smartcar.caHowever, I have since found this site via GOOGLE and I am newly registered. I am really starting to like this site. It's got a lot more to offer.CSG

I have had my smart for just over a year now and originally, my ins. was $137/mos. Now, as I mentioned above, I pay $150/mos. and I am with ING Insurance. And again, I'm in Southern Ontario as well. I have heard of Economical Ins. I will Google them and see how lucky I get. I've always thought anything over $75 is BS for the smart!!! I know ins. companies take into account, one's age, location, no. of accidents (if any), how much driving one does and how many km's ..... but thanks so much, it's worth looking into. Thanks so much!!!! :-)CSG

I checked out www.thesmart.ca and it's not the same site. www.smartcar.ca says, "under construction" and has done for a few months. When I joined www.smartcar.ca , this site didn't exist or at least when I Googled smart car, this site never popped up.I would say there are as many members on that site as there are here. However, that site is and has been out of commission, so HERE I AM :-) Again, I do like this site better. You have cooler features and fun buttons to press. Thanks,CSG

I have been checking around to auto insurance companies to see about lowering my car insurance. Right now, I am paying $150/mos. (Ontario) and all the companies I have checked out have even higher quotes and they all tell me that the reason the insurance on the smart is so high is because ... and this is what they have ALL told me ... that because the smart is small it is therefore considered unsafe AND that it is at high risk for theft because it can easily be broken into.WHAT . . . ???!!! I SAID WHAT??!!It makes my blood boil!! They have no clue, no idea and nor are they interested. Articles have been printed proving that the smart is one of the top safest vehicles on the road today. Yes, I know, no vehicle is indestructible ... but I mean absolutely no one wanted to listen to me tell them and show them documentation of how the smart is built using a stronger steel than other cars, how it has to be stronger because of its size AND no one wanted to hear about the demobilizing feature either. It appears for now, even though there have already been studies done that benefit the smart, I guess there has to be study upon study, upon study etc. before insurance companies will agree to lower the cost of insurance on smart cars.If anyone in Ontario has had better luck than I, please DO respond :-)CountySmartGirl

Black on Black with red interior. I did not know you could get red interior with the black. Very interesting. You'll absolutely fall in love with your smart when you get it. I never loved a car before, but I really love my smart. Take Care :-)

I recently joined this site because another smart car site I used has been "under construction" and for a while, that site was the only site (Canadian) to use for smart users. I got fed up with constantly checking to see if it was back up and decided to Google "smart car" and found this site, which is a lot like the site I was using only this one seems a lot more organized and I don't recall being able to post a profile pic.The site is called, www.smartcar.ca Does anyone know what's happened to it and why it's said "under construction" for so long?I have to say though, I do like this site better. Like I just mentioned, much more organized and I like that I can post a profile picture. I'm not sure what else I can do other than posting. I've seen some pretty cool stuff here, so I'm sure I'll learn as I go along.Country Smart Girl

I have to disagree. I own a 2005 smart and I also have installed the smaller self adhesive mirrors onto my side mirrors. Yes, the little mirrors do make an improvement on lessening the blind spot problem, however, they do not take it away completely.I have come across someone in one of the smart car groups on Facebook and he's actually gone to the trouble of installing a rear camera on the back of his smart and has a small monitor placed just above the radio. That's a little extreme for me, but I suppose that's another idea.

Your smart has a parking brake? I wish mine did. I have the first model, 2005 and I only have Neutral and the E brake. I don't know why the smart designers didn't put a park gear on it. It would give me a little more peace if my smart also had a parking gear as well as the E brake.
