About peregrine48

  1. So I drove the car for about 20 minutes. Lots at slow speeds, sharp turns, speed bumps, and some at highway speed. Didn't notice any difference in driving. I inspected all four springs and couldn't see any breaks. If I put it up on a floor jack and take the load off the springs, would that help to see if one is broken?
  2. I didn't drive it a whole lot after that, but the ride seemed ok... I'll go look at the springs.
  3. I just took my 2005 smart passion cabriolet out for a shakedown cruise after it rested in the garage this winter. Everything was doing great when I heard a metalic clang on the road way. Stopped and walked back and picked this portion of a ring up off the ground. I think it came off the smart, not 100% sure. Any thoughts on what it is, if it came off my car, and if it is mission critical?
  4. I'm dealing with a broken ankle, so it's going to have to wait awhile before I can really do any investigating. I might get a family member to help out later this week.
  5. Thanks Tolsen! It could be a bad ground somewhere I suppose. I drove the car today with my scanguage running started out at 11.4 volts and watched it drop down to 10.9 by the time I got home. Battery cables were all secure, so I'm thinking either bad ground or my alternator prematurely failed.
  6. Hello, I thought I would give everyone an update. I went ahead and ordered the alternator from the outfit in Georgia through Amazon. It came quickly and looked great in the box. I took it down to my mechanics and they installed it without too much hassle. About $350 american to do the swap and $199 for the alternator. Everything seemed completely fixed for the past 5-6 weeks. No more battery light, no more ABS/Traction Control lights. . UNTIL: today! My mother was driving it home and the battery light came on and off several times, then as she got home all three lights in the lower left corner of the dash came on. Bummer! All I can think is that the new alternator has failed already. I bought a brand new sealed AGM battery at about the same time that the new alternator went in. It doens't seem like that would have failed. I've got it on the float charger right now and am planning on using my scangauge to look at instantaneous voltage when I drive tomorrow. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Is my logic sound? Did my brand new alternator already bite the dust?
  7. Thank You Everyone! I went ahead and ordered the 2nd Alternator. I'll post back and let everyone know how it goes!
  8. I should have mentioned that my Smart is a Canadian model... Imported into the U.S. Thank you for the part numbers Flossy. I know that both of those alternators I posted are for Smart diesels, I'm just not sure which bolt pattern I have. And unfortunately I have a broken ankle and can't get out to look at my Smart.
  9. I have a 2005 Cabrio CDI. A couple weeks ago the battery light (and also traction control and a few others in the bottom left side of the dash) came on at night. My dad was driving the car with high beams on and eventually the headlights went out completely. I assumed the battery was to blame (it was still the original) and I ordered an Optima Red Top replacement. All was well for a bit, but then the battery light came back on a couple of days ago. I'm thinking that it is the alternator as the new battery was down to about 10.5-11 Volts after only a few quick trips with the car. I'm having trouble figuring out which alternator is the replacement for the car. I've read that there are several. I think I've narrowed it down to one of these two, and I'm wondering if anyone on the forums can chime in with which is the correct one. 1: http://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-FORTWO-DIESEL-EUROPEAN-0124225020/dp/B009OOQW78/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413913761&sr=8-2&keywords=660-154-09-02 2: http://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-EUROPEAN-MODEL-S1CLC1-1999-04/dp/B00A6H4NUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413913628&sr=8-1&keywords=0004717V005 Thank You!
  10. It was the rings!!!! Thank you so much Dmoonen for hooking me up with new rings. I had the same mechanics that told me my rings were fine, do the installation, they were a little sheepish when they gave me the old rings.... So happy to finally have a working car!
  11. Yeah, maybe it is the tone rings (Reluctor)... just seems odd that my mechanics specifically inspected them and said they looked good.... I think this is definitely related to that system though.... if the rings are ok, could the sensor be what is bad? Everything I have read suggests that the kind of ABS engagement I have when slowing down and braking for a slow stop (like to a stop sign) is related to the wheel speed sensor not reading properly..... I would gladly take you up on your offer of some ABS rings, I just don't want to replace them if there is actually something else, like the wheel speed sensor, or a bad wiring harness.... Anyone have any thoughts?
  12. Did you ever find out what connections were causing your problem? I am having the same problem. At slower speeds the speedometer jumps back and forth from 0-20 or so.... I also get a shudder that feels like the ABS are kicking in as if I am sliding on ice..... happens frequently.... took it into local mechanics who thought that maybe the tone rings (reluctor rings) were coated in corrosion (but were not cracked) and that was causing the sensor to misread wheel speed and kick in ABS when it shouldn't.... They scoured the rings and area and thought they removed all of the rust and metal particles and the car did seem improved for about 10 minutes, but now the grinding and speedometer jump are back.... I'm thinking this might be an electrical issue, but would be great to narrow it down before I start getting into it. Thanks!
  13. Glad to hear it hasn't come back! Car is going to the shop tomorrow, I will report back on what I find out.
