  2. Sounds more like they can get a break on insurance if they can limit to 105 so its a cost issue rather than a behaviour one. That said, the 450 smarts are FAR from sporty at 100km/h+.DDR

  4. Actualy it's more the other way around. The car must be programmed for the key. Once this is done, the old remote no longer works. The key still turns the locks but the remote is more important for getting the car to actually run.,DDR
  5. My experience in previous cars... Understeer = sliding out into the ditch in the middle of a corner (yay front wheel drive sentra!)Oversteer = Well managed "drift" resulting in some entertainment(80% of winter driving corners in my Camaro Z28 my pre-smart car).DDR
  6. There are two seperate issues here... front and rear.Rear: Transmission issues as mentioned above.Front:The smart does not have locking steering like most every other car has. What this means is that the wheels can turn on their own. Add to that the fact that they are narrow and you get a situation where if the car was being towed by the front wheels (even with the rears on a dolly) and the tow truck went around a corner the wheels could twist within the things that hold the tires. The front tire would "slip" between the grips and either your car detatches from the truck or more likely the wheel grabber things end up damaging your wheel wells, perhaps tearing the fenders off.To be more clear here... Hold a coin lightl between your thumb and forefinger. The coin is the tire, your fingers are the wheel lifters on the tow truck. Now take your other hand and twist the coin out of the grip... and let it fall through. When the coin has fallen a few millimeters... thats when those grips would be hitting your fender!If you EVER have to do this, make SURE that the driver uses the straps that they have to hold the front tires securly into the brackets. With a full size car, more often than not, they simply don't bother to use these straps but they should have them. Strapped properly the risk of a twist would be reduced. Also if they are carefull and aware of the risk they should be able to mitigate the risk somewhat as well by positioning the wheels right on the edge of the bracket next to the bar which would go alongside the tire.DDR
  7. I'm not considering taking my 450 to the USA for 2 years... I'm considering trading it for a 451 and taking THAT which should be identical to an American one.Thanks, DDR

My 450 was one of the first cars in the country, it began life as the "Tartan-smart"...I'm moving to Houston, TX for a two year stint starting next summer and trying to figgure out what to do car wise. Mostly I'm trying to sort out what to do with my 450. - I could sell it here and buy a 451 here to get the 4 year warranty and a car that is actually USA compliant (I hope???). - I could sell it here and risk not being able to buy a 451 there due to waiting lists and end up buying something else entirely I'd also be getting a car with a 2 year warranty :(How are waiting lists here? Will the dealers have stock on the lots initially?Will the warranty be honored going both ways? On a US car coming north and on a Canadian car going south?I wonder if the remainder of my 450's warranty would be honored at a US smart dealer?Cheers, DDR

  10. About a year from now I am likely to be moving to Houston for a two year stint. I would LIKE to take my 2005 fourtwo with me...I've read about taking it for ONE year with Canadian plates... what if I drive it back to Canada for the weekend in the middle there? How about down to mexico for the weekend?Would I keep my Canadian plates that I currently have on it or would I be better to switch to a province where I have family and access to a Canadian mailing address?Where would I get insurance from then? Canadian insurance or local insurance? Would I then need to have a drivers licence in whatever province?Bleh! Maybe I should just go hardcore american and lease a hummer for two years :PDDR
  11. Just got it fixed at Midtown in Toronto, workorder attached to my post (Thu Jun 28, 2007 9:54 am) on the "Is your A/C failing?" thread. The mods should merge some of these threads together!DDR
  12. AC fixed under warranty!They found a leak at the rear end of the high pressure line. The system was completly empty.They replaced the high and low pressure lines, some O rings.I have attached a PDF of the relevant bits of the work order if anyone is interested.DDR 2007_06_28_Smart_AC_Repair.pdf
  13. There is also a known fault with a retaining clip, halfway along that long pipe run, that commonly breaks and needs to be replaced with a new rivet fastener. One hopes that is on order from Germany along with your other bits. Elsewise you may be back visiting again in future for the very same reason...B:sun:One might presume that the absence of said clip might be related to the leak where the pipe attaches? If that is the case one would hope they fix the root cause!DDR
  14. Mine just came out of the shop... the long front to back pipes are "being shipped from Europe" something about a leak right where they connect to something at the front.DDR
  15. Any decent tire shop can do that work.Pick up a set of steel rims by next fall and get your winters mounted & balanced on them and you can do the swap over yourself. It's ridiculous fast to do because you only jack the car twice, once for each side.I bought a deep 16mm (or 15??) 1/2" socket and a long wrench (not a ratchet but it has a swivel on it, I'm sure it has a name that I don't know) and an el-cheapo 1/2" torque wrench and I use the jack from my fiancee's mazda to do the jacking.DDR
