The E V Thread...

Weird. The Prius is as solid as a Camry, and the A123 conversion is Toyota-backed -- and done at Toyota dealerships.

I guess that would be the U.S.$11,000 Hymotion conversion. It seems a little odd that they would spend that kind of cash on a car that already has 80,000 kms on it. Could be this one was a rattle-trap before the conversion process.I think it's a good thing that the government is looking at plug-ins now. They will be here in the not-too-distant future.

Yeah, I read a review in a magazine not long ago (maybe Motor Trend?) that said while it was a commendable incremental advance, it was nowhere near financially effective. In normal driving, they averaged something like 15 miles on the A123 pack, but the engine frequently kicked in for added thrust. They calculated closer to 60 mpg US.

The conversion was done in Vancouver and the plug in battery replaces the spare tire, which is displaced to the shallow trunk. The extra battery over-powers the electric motor and essentially makes even more rapid acceleration possible, but it seems not to be designed to extend range.11 Grand is far, far more than I have spent in all fuel for the smart and B 200 over a total of 170,000 km......

Is this a Toyota-sanctioned conversion? The Hymotion A123 job is fully sanctioned, and done at the Toyota dealership. Hymotion replaces the firmware in the Prius' computer and UI.

It's some sort of $11K bo-jang I think. I don't work for the Province so I really don't know. I was just out in the field with their riparian specialist and that's how I scored the ride. There is a make 110 V plug inset into the rear bumper (nice vulnerable spot).

That brings back memories of the electric car I built when I was 12!-Iain
