Engine choices/prices in UK v/s Canada

I would like to see a discusion of the cost of the new CDI Smart and also the Brabus 98HP Turbo Smarts, IF these were to be sold in Canada. In particular just how much more the new cdi should cost than the current gas model.Also how much more a REAL Brabus should cost(with the correct 98HP engine) as opposed to the version sold here.The comparable features would also have to be factored in, when trying to figure out the possible prices.Right now on the UK sight: 52KW/71HP (Passion Cabriolet)... 10075.96 (lbs sterling?) 62KW/84HP Turbo (Passion Cabriolet)... 10595.74 (lbs sterling?) 72KW/98HP Turbo (Passion Cabriolet)... 14871.70 (lbs sterling?) (Brabus) 33KW/45HP (Passion Cabriolet)... 10565.32 9lbs sterling) (CDI)(Turbo?)These figures are of cars not configured exactly like ours.(yet)

All figures are before tax and the 71 HP engine is the non-mhd model (no longer available in Europe).The cdi was 1020 Euros more expensive than the 71 HP gasser, so call it $1650 more ($16,640).The BRABUS is 5500 Euros more than the 71 HP pure, so call it $8900 more ($23,890).The BRABUS Xclusive is 7980 Euros more than the 71 HP pure, so call it $12,900 more ($27,890).Our BRABUS package with the non-turbo engine is $21,900 so it all sort of makes sense to me.If they do certify the 98 HP engine, they would be wise to offer both the regular BRABUS (with the suspension, engine, wheels etc but without the fancy trim) alongside the BRABUS Xclusive, to sell enough of them to justify the costs of certifying this engine.

Thanks for the great info Mike! Would you ever get a 451 diesel Smart, if it came to Canada? Or would you pay those prices if they sold the higher powered Brabus here?I wonder how many members would but the diesel, or the 98HP Brabus, if they brought them to canada.Maybe we should do a poll,on both , and hopfully Mercedes- Benz will here about it !

I think I did a poll like that over a year ago. I would get a BRABUS 98.

For sure the diesel will not make a return to Canada. At least not before 2012 :( The MHB is next, and they are pushing hard for a quick release of the fully electric version. If (and only if) the BRABUS version we have does well here, it may be a possibility to get the turbo if it gets certified. Have you driven the new BRABUS yet? With 30 more horsepower that smart is going to fly!!

Unfortunately you can not compare prices like that. The price you pay really does not have anything to do with how much it costs to build it, or add different engines or accessories. It is purely a marketing based number. So, the only question to ask is, what are YOU willing to pay for the different engines/packages?

I did a detailed projected cost of the 450s when they first arrived in 2004 and again in 2007 for the 451s and I am pleased to report that I was within 2%.I have driven two 451s with the 84 HP turbo engine and even those fly. The BRABUS would be better.@smartspecialist: there are probably many people like me who would not buy the current BRABUS because it is all mouth and trousers, but who'd buy a 98 HP BRABUS in a second. So I won't hold my breath for massive 70 HP BRABUS sales.
