The oil was first changed at 32,000, then 40,000 and then again at 40,154?Did you do all the other oil changes DIY, or are you really that cruel to the car? ;)

Hi

I did search for last year's thread but could not find it. Yes this is the costs for year 2.

All services, unless otherwise noted, are done at the Toyota dealer. I am fast approaching 70 years of age, and my body is starting to protest mightily when I crawl under the smart or yaris to do maintenance or repairs.

Here is Year One of our long term trial with the Yaris.

Start Km - 18

End Km - 26,368

Kilometres driven - 26,350

Fuel costs - $1,786.87

Lifetime average 6.01 litres per 100 Kms

Maintenance and Repairs

8708 Kms - 8,000 Km Oil and Filter Change $46.98

8926 Kms - DIY Windshield Washer Fluid, Lock lube $10.21

17,641 Kms - 16,000 Km O&F Change, Tire Rotation $46.98

17,797 Kms - Repair chip in Windshield $61.60

18,063 Kms - Replace Right Front Tire - nail in sidewall - Covered under warranty

24,677 Kms - 24,000 Km Oil and Filter change $46.98

24,677 Kms - Paint touch up stick $14.62

Total maintenance and repairs $227.37

Insurance for the year $1012.00

Total Costs $3026.24

Cost per Kilometre - $0.12

Hope this helps to make it a little more clear.

OK that's better. My B 200 has cost $900 over two years and three services - the last at 50,000 (this last service takes it to 70,000 km). Twice as much money for something less than twice the distance....

I know the price of maintenance for the yaris will go up. The first three services were just oil and filter changes. The service schedule for the yaris is every 8,000 Km while I believe the B200 is every 20,000 Km. The 48,000 Km service will be around $200.00, the 56,000 Km will be around $50.00 and the 64,000 Km will be around $150.00 if the Toyota dealer does them. So these costs should be added in if comparing your B200 and my Yaris; plus my wife would trade the yaris in on a B200 in a heartbeat. I like my smart and will continue to drive and enjoy it and pay whatever maintenance and repairs are needed. Some people tell me that the yaris is a cheap and easy car to maintain and if that is the case then how does the smart stack up against it in regards to maintenance and repairs. Now we will see.Roy

Me: "Yeah, but it's warranty so it's not costing anything."

Well, hard to believe, year four now has now come and gone. One of my sons car has bit the dust and he has been using our car to get back and forth to work since March. Yearly mileage has gone up. He also has a more aggressive driving style then I do. Also driving back and forth to work more than 15 km each way has increased the insurance premium.

Start Km - 61,848

End Km- 86,345

Kilometres driven- 24,497

Fuel Costs-$1846.09

Lifetime FE- 6.11 litres per 100 kilometres

Maintenance and Repairs

65,182 - DIY - 64,000 Km Inspection - Replaced cabin air filter $34.28

65,315 - Valley Toyota - 64,000 Km Inspection - Maintenance Service $179.98

65,885 - Wally's Auto Body - Repair scrapes on right side of back bumper $717.44 (paid by ICBC)

68,956 - DIY - Replaced driver's side brake lightbulb $3.74 (first lightbulb replaced)

72,489 - Valley Toyota - 72,000 Km Inspection - Oil and filter service $52.68

76,392 - DIY - 3.78 litres of summer windshield washer fluid $2.21

80,244 - DIY - 80,000 Km Inspection - Replaced cabin air filter $34.28

80,487 - Valley Toyota - 80,000 Km Inspection - Maintenance service $177.27

80,489 - DIY - 80,000 Km Inspection - Replaced air filter $26.48

83,632 - DIY - Replaced driver's side windshield wiper $12.76

Total Maintenance and Repairs $1241.12 ( I paid $523.68 of this )

Insurance for nine months $1,056.00

Total Costs $4,146.73 ($3,429.29 if I leave out the ICBC claim )

Cost per Kilometre $0.17 ($0.14 if I leave out the ICBC claim) Probably around $0.15-$0.16 if pro rated insurance for one year.

Your operating costs have gone up quite a bit, from a low of 12-13 cents/km to 19 cents/km. I see you haven't included depreciation. With depreciation, my old smart was at 21.2 cents/km over 250K km.The Fiesta services are going to cost more than for your Toyota, because I am using fully synthetic oil, and changing it at the same interval as your Toyota. The Ford is averaging about 0.1 L/100 km less than your car right now (this should improve with summer tires). Its dealer services are right cheap, even with synthetic oil: $115.

A young lady with whom I work has a five-speed Fiesta SE. While she loves it, she has had a rash of issues with it in just 15000 km.

Interesting. Ours has 17000 km and has been quite ok! Maybe hers has the powershift auto box. They are a bit of a problem.

Someone is bound to get a lemon, with every make and model. Subaru is recalling cars today because the key fob if dropped can cause cars equipped with remote starters to unintentionally start. The auto has 6 forward gears, yes?Francesco, what types of issues is your coworker experiencing? No start(s) like Mike T or something different?

Recurring CELs, windows that won't go down, sticky hatch release, rattling exhaust system, immo loses sync... It's a five-speed.

Hi MikeThe cost per Kilometre if I do not include the ICBC portion of repairs is $0.1574. This raise has mainly been caused by the extra insurance for my children to drive the car and the increase in the price of gas. I expect it to go up to around $0.25 per Kilometre once only my wife and I drive the car. Between the two of us we would only drive about 12,000 to 14,000 Km per year. A lot of this driving would be around Chilliwack on a cold engine. If I had included depreciation, the amount would be near $0.30 per Kilometre. The car cost just under $20,000 + $2,000 in taxes and fees + just under $2,000 to finance for 4 years - $1,000 I talked them down - $1,000 we got back from the Federal Government for fuel efficiency. So total cost was $22,000. The wholesale value for the car now, is around $6500 so I try not to think about depreciation. The service schedule for the Yaris is every 8,000 Km/6 months. This rotates between an Oil and Filter change service (cost around $52 with taxes and fees) and a Maintenance service (cost around $175 with taxes and fees). I had a dozen oil filters I bought in 2008 for about $4.50 apiece and last year when Walmart moved I bought 6, 5 litre jugs of Valvoline 5W30 conventional oil at under $10.00 a jug. I am using these for the Oil and Filter changes.Hope you have really good luck with your Fiesta. I will get my smart file up to date as well. My daughter is driving it full time now. And Bil, it also stands for Found On Road Dead.Roy
