smart sales in Canada

32 posts in this topic

The year started off not so well for smart in Canada, with only 82 sales of new 451s being recorded. This compares to 88 the year before, also bad. Mercedes-Benz sales were also down by a similar percentage, but a far higher number.

This is not surprising since at my (MB) dealership they have not sold any. People want the diesel, is what I have been told.

Mecedes-Benz is stupid in my opinion, for not certifying the 451 diesel smarts for North America. They are counting on the expensive Electric drive smarts to 'save' the smart brand in North America.

I expect to eventually change my cdi for a newer diesel. If smart does not import one others such as VW do.Raymond

The next generation smart is supposedly not going to have a diesel option, even in Europe.

February was worse: only 74 smarts were sold in Canada during February 2011.

They're OK, running at close to 100K cars a year right now.

A direct injection gasoline could be just a frugal as a diesel.

Not quite, but closer. Lots of VWs and other cars on sale now have GDI engines and the TDIs still slay 'em.

As long as MB will still manufacture/supply the 450 engine, I will own a 450 Smart. If the time ever comes that they import a newer version diesel, I will purchase it. I will never purchase a gas powered Smart.

It would be interesting to note the avg price for gas for each of the months above?

For April in Ottawa I didn't see gas below $1.28/L for Regular

A lot more people at work are now starting to take an interest in my Smart and I've notice that the number of cars in our lot is starting to wear thin (above normal levels for this time of year).

You've probably seen the discussions on SCoA about smart USA sales, lack of marketing, suggestions to improve sales, etc. How does M-B Canada market the car? In an interview, the M-B Canada CEO said they go after the potential buyers who do not purchase whatever is selling well in a given market. How do they know who those folks are and how does M-B Canada reach out to them. It seems M-B USA could use some of those techniques when they take over smart distribution and sales in the USA. :)

With this month of sales behind us, the total number of fortwos delivered in Canada is just over 20,000. 10,239 of those were diesel cdis.

Notes for the 451, on sales, but all imported cars are in the spreadsheet by VIN.
