The smart is my wife's car and has been essentially trouble free. I seldom get to drive it, never mind work on it! (I did just install the snow tires!)So no, that project is way down the list! I was more interested when we had signs of oil leakage, but since the turbo was changed (under warranty) we see no oil. But if any is getting to intercooler, some type of separator or collection pot would make sense. I have one on the breather on my 300D air cleaner and quite a bit of oil collects between oil changes. Presumably the same happens on the smart even if the turbo is not leaking oil.

Interesting find! It would be great if someone could get the dimensions. We don't have a BMW dealer here.

Certainly looks like it would work, and price is right!

You can buy these here:

This a bit different picture:

Apparently there are two of these on a beemer - one for each bank of cylinders. Presumably other one would be a mirror image, but your number looks like it would be most likely to fit.

Oil separator vent hose LH 11151406953 £25.32

Oil separator vent hose RH 11151406952 £22.85

Return hose 11151406900 £5.24

Gasket 11151406790 £9.94

Oil separator LH 11151406788 £27.29

Oil separator RH 11151406789 £27.29

Yup, at that price I thought I might just order one for testing.Graham, you're right that there are two and that the one for cylinders 5-8 in the BMW is the mirror image (same part number but last digit is a 9 instead of an 8). I picked this one off the website because the offset of the tangential inlet looks like it would work best in our application........MZ

That's great, MZ. You can guinea-pig this one and let us know the story :P

It might have to be my Xmas gift to self!

A very promising find. Looks like it may fit as well.

Does anyone have dimensional details of the BMW cyclone separator? Also confirmation of correct part number would be appreciated. The one that may fit is the one shown in above photo but I see we may have a 50% chance of ordering right part. Note that EGR supply pipe will have to be blanked off or the BMW cyclone will melt.

....precisely why I haven't ordered one online yet!! ;)

I haven't had the chance to see if the local BMW dealer actually stocks these but that wold be the best way to confirm both dimensions and inlet orientation. I couldn't find dimensions anywhere online and, in fact, the following BMW diagram seems to contradict the part numbers for left vs right.....

post-6677-1323869001_thumb.jpg

That is, previous posts show cyclone ending in "8" as the one with the tangential inlet orientation we want while the part list that accompanies this drawing shows the part # ending as "8" to be item #1 in the drawing.

I'd really like to see one before committing.

The diagrams show a straight oil bottom return connection while the photos show an offset connection. They seems to have a y-connector to collect the two oil returns. Doesn't show how that connects to engine or dip stick. I guess we would still have to tee into the dipstick? (I should read back - forgot how that was going to be done.)Tolsen - did you get one and cut it in half? If yes, what are dimensions? Edited by Graham

Very interesting topic. By the way the name intercooler means exactly what part of the vehicule. I recently cleaned my EGR valve and it improved a lot the engine accelaration, but how do you cut the piece made of copper, you replace it by what material since the are a lot of pressure in there. to what do u connect the air filter. Do I really need a filter ( althought I live In canada too ! ) because I would skip that part. When cutting the copper to egr valve, I don`t understand where this part ends now, in the tube that goes down as a drain . Gabriel

What happens to the tip that goes into the Tik rubber if no filter is applied ? Do u think some dirt can come into it and jam the turbo ? Should I put another piece than the filter just to make sure I don' t have any problems ? Merci. Gabriel

Is it possible that the car will eat about 1 lit of oil in between servicing oil engine ? dealer told me yes. My car is 175,000 km ( 2005 cdi ) . What is your opinion. Gabriel

Yes,It is a good idea to check the oil level every week. Not uncommon to add oil a couple of times between oil changes.I personally change the oil every 5,000 to 6,000 km, not 8,000 like the maintenance minder says.CANMAN

My cars use about .065 L/1000 km. If I do oil at 10,000 km (as the green car often requests), I sometimes have to add 1/3 L to be safe, at about 7500 km. The white car gets changes every 4000-5000 km.I would say that up to 0.35 L/1000 km is still normal....above that it's a bit on the high side for a three cylinder engine.

Smart officially says 0.8L/1,000km is the upper end of acceptable. Must be checked often and s/b changed @ under 8,000km. I usually change it at 6,000 or so.B :sun:

Peugeot used to say the 404 could use up to 1 L/1000 km, but mine never used any oil.....weird!

Ours is more like the lower than the upper.A paper or foam filter will not work on the CDI crankcase vent.

Media filters don't work on the cdi. Even air/water separators like those from air compressors etc will quickly get gummed up. Even ordinary flow-through catch tanks will pass excessive oil-laden fumes, and still need to be emptied frequently - believe me, I've tried pretty much everything to make them work. I think only the cyclone-type separator (like TK/BMW etc) will work in any more-or-less effective way (though still sub-optimal, IMO). Until someone gets one of the BMW units and proves it out in live testing, I will reluctantly stick to the low tech, dump-to-atmosphere method.Bil :senile:
