That's great Simon.

As long as you can identify the drain and fill plugs, you're laughing all the way.

Wow!

The 1 > kama of < practical mission oil exchange: No.1

2002.1.4

2nd mission oil exchange was executed simultaneously with motor oil exchange.

It is exchange after approximately 6000 kilometer travelling from 1st exchange.

(Collection of data cooperation: Smart Yokohama

As for mission oil デキシロン of knowing GM? U

It seems like fixed turn of the smart.

As for the ATF which this time is exchanged

of the ワコーケミカル It is the ATF Type AE.

In application model of this ATF Type AE

" DEXRON-? In the vehicle which appoints the U use

It is possible ", it is written.

Mission oil drain of engine lower part

You open.

When you open, it meaning that the simultaneously old ATF comes out

It leaves the waste oil tray under the truth of the drain.

Other than and at 6000 kilometers in the eye which was seen

It was the color which it is dirty also cannot be thought enormously.

And, the mission oil oil supply mouth is opened.

The new ATF is filled from here.

Before the fill, the entirely old ATF coming out

Verifying, you close the drain.

Relationship of position is such feeling.

By your the oil the person who is not exchanged as for one time

You will try looking under the engine.

With スマ side special oil changer

The ATF is filled.

The hose is poured in the filler inlet, the ATF is inserted.

When it becomes full tank, it overflows.

At the place where the ATF which overflowed settles the oil supply mouth

You close.

Is that for our same transmission?

I was going to confirm the oil-fluid specification here at some point, as 24,000 seems to me a likely time to consider doing it. Which for me is maybe 2 months away.

What is the change interval for the transmission fluid? 24 000 KM? What type of fluid does the smart uses and what is the capacity?

Someone told me once that because we have a dry plate clutch...

There is no transmission oil in our smarts...

Are those instructions for a petrol model or a roadster perhaps?

Yes, the transaxle has oil in it, but the bell houing (with clutch inside) does not.

let me just start up the WIS...

the smart fortwo cabrio pulse CDI uses

hmmm... it's either ATF or 80W90

There is a big difference between ATF and 80/90 gear oil.

The 2 oils are worlds apart in physical properties.

The information doesn't make sense.

Nowadays, many manual transmissions use ATF. Keep in mind that Mobil 1 makes synthetic ATF. This would be the stuff to use, but first I will wait to confirm that ATF is what is needed.

For those of you that frequent the Euro smart boards... (funkysmart?)

Post the question there as to what they use...

Some of those people with an excess of 300k must have changed their own tranny fluid by now...

What are they using?

Eddie

Maybe a quick e-mail to Getrag will answer the question... I would like to know 100% for sure the specification.

I haven't seen an interval listed anywhere, BTW.

The official A-B service sheets just mention checking that the tranny is leaking but no mention of changing fluid

I am coming up on my 32K when I will change the fuel filter. I may do the tranny at the same time. MB should carry fluids

I bought 4 Michelin jack stands at Cdn Tire on sale yesterday. I have 2 large jacks do I can lift the car and put it on the stands to do the fule filter change, remove the belly pan (or what ever it is know as on the smart) and also do the tranny fluid

The official transmission fluid PDF above lists: Castrol Dexron-III/Mercon ATF F-30341 for North America

I went to the Castrol site. They list two such fluids

Castrol SYNTEC Full Synthetic Dexron III / Mercon

Castrol Dexron-III / Mercon

In one US supplier I found the synth for $6.50 per quart. Non-synths seem to run more like $3 per quart.

The specs call for 1.4L so the synthetic would be a logical choice. Cdn Tire carries Castrol so they might have it.

I went to Cdn Tire today. They don't carry Castrol ATF. Did have Mobile 1 ATF and another oil that began with an A. (I can't remember the name).

The spec sheet above doesn't even call for synth Dexron III. Seems the Mobile 1 ATF would work just fine. It is pretty high end stuff.

Mobile 1 ATF page

Was $9 per litre.

I believe the transmission in the smart is closer to a motorcycle transmission than a car. Bike transmissions regularly use ATF fluid.

Yep. Sounds like you found a good spec ATF there, Rich. :beerchug:

Full synthetic and complies with DexronIII. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use that one.

Please let us know how the tranny il change goes!

I am at 30K. At 32K I will change the air filter (again), fuel filter and tranny fluid. The key I need to find now on the tranny is how to pump the fluid into the tranny. You can't just pour it in as there is no room above. I found a pump at Cdn Tire designed to pump oil into a car but it is designed for a 4 litre container. I need to find something like that for 1L.

I have time so I will look around.

Looking forward to hearing of your experience. I'll be dropping the tranny fluid by 50k for sure - unless for some reason they did that during the repair on the clutch actuator. (Still waiting on ppwk...)

Here is a trick - for outboard motors - you fill them from the bottom drain and then put the top plug in to stop it flowing back out. How the hell does this relate to a smart car? - well I'm getting to that.

The tool you use (well at least commercially) is basically a plant sprayer with the sprayer part taken off and fitted with a nozzle and o-ring. So instead of fussing with a squirt bottle or a funnel and tube - ya fill the sprayer up with the required oil (plus a bit) - pump it up - and squirt the oil into the filler hole with out having to go through any major contortions or having to have two people to fill the thing. Works great on differentials - transmissions - you name it - just remember to turn it off before you take it out of the fill hole. If you want to get fancy you can make up a custom filler out of metal tubing to to the filler with minimum fuse.

The sprayers are not too expensive (any one that has sucked up a face full of 90w oil would agree) - I would recomend the metal ones though in case the plastic reacts with the oil - although if they are polyethelene they should be fine. And don't think about a used one - not just the pesticides issue - the steel ones have problems with rust after a bit of use - plus you may aggravate your significant other if it is theirs. :bangin:

Cheers,

Cameron
