Propane now used in latest freezers

My mother had a fridge that ran on candles. It typically burnt one candle per 24 hours running time.

Totally possible. If you look at the size of the flame that heats the boiler of an absorption fridge it is about the size of a candle. How cool is physics. :)

My mother did not like gas. Worried she would get poisoned or suffer an explosion. I converted an old Electrolux fridge from gas to candle. It worked really well and was remarkably reliable. Also much easier to start than gas fridges at the time. After a few years running on candles I converted this fridge to kerosene. It still runs nearly thirty years later.
