Multiple symptoms-low on power

Hi Guys,

The members here have been invaluable in keeping my 450 going. If i may avail of your expertise again...

My car is having issues... Hard to start, glow plug light stays on for a long time before starting ( it was -2 today and it cycled 10 times before it finally caught). low on power( i really have to push it on hills or higher speed roads to keep up with traffic and as a result, black smoke pours out the back when I push it that hard) Could it be glow plugs, injectors... something as simple as a air filter? Nearest dealer is 500 miles away so I'm kinda on my own.

 

Any direction would br greatly appreciated.

Egr valve and burnt out glow plugs. Enjoyable to sort out if you like working on old cars

I stopped in to see Mr. Loafer on my way home in Newfoundland. He had diagnosed correctly - the air filter was dirty+. 

The smart is much better now. I ran codes and there was nothing major and no egr codes. He does plan on changing the glow plugs - so I gave a few hints about that!
