Performance exshaust

22 posts in this topic

How’s it going , just bought my first smart car , 2005’cdi Fortwo I think it’s a pure , I’m. Not expecting it to be fast and furious but I’d like to put an exshaust on it , preferably catback if possible and some rims , I’ve read forums that a remap might be to much for the car to handle , will an exshaust be a problem ?, insight would be appreciated thanks

Welcome to the club.

A less restrictive intake and exhaust may help the turbo spool slightly faster, while a remap will offer very noticeable increases in power.

There are likely still options out of Europe.  A custom exhaust would likely be the way to go though.

Welcome to the club.

I have no experience with performance exhausts on cars, but both my smarts have been remapped and there is a noticeable difference in torque and overall performance.  Highly recommended

To determine what model your smart is, simply look at the little triangular plastic cover where your radio antennae attaches.  It should say Pure, Pulse or Passion.

Welcome!  The car can handle a remap as long as you don't beat the crap out of it all the time, and change the oil and filter more often than the car tells you to.

For "performance" exhausts, you would be able to have a custom made but it would not have a diesel catalyst in it, so either stick with stock or if you're lucky you may be able to find one of these BRABUS units made for the diesel, which have a catalyst built in, sound better but are not noisy, but probably add little if any power:

My experience with custom exhausts is not good. They tend to break because of the vibrations.

It's not missing from the BRABUS exhaust.  But the rubber block is different - black rubber, not red, and it's of a different hardness.

My experience with custom made products is 'where it breaks' requires reinforcement or design improvements. Additional SS welding is not a big deal if the problem area is understood. Most people are unable to grasp engineering flaws and condemn their designs because of poor insight.

I agree, but unfortunately don't have easy access to SS welding.

I guess I have poor insight whereas you on the other hand have a better understanding.

Just curious, but what kind of training have you had? I looked but you never properly introduced yourself.

It has been the custom here to a least tell us what kind of smart you drive and what got you interested in this unique vehicle.

I agree with GRP151 that it is '' some type vibration balancer ''

A flex pipe as part of a custom exhaust should be an inexpensive way to manage any stress at the flange end.  What is the going rate for an OE exhaust now?

Nice link!

Did anyone notice something missing from all of these modified exhaust systems?

Do you know why this is placed here?

muffler.png

This is the second mount point for the muffler. If this is loose, missing or comes off, the weld where the down pipe meets the muffler housing will crack due to the stress of the weight of the entire exhaust being supported by the down tube.

My car was in for service once, and that bolt was not properly re-fastened, causing the muffler to vibrate and eventually sag to the left. By the time I realized what happened, the damage was done.

This second mounting point is not optional, unless you want your exhaust to break within months.

The BRABUS exhaust I was given had cracked welds inside the canister because the rubber block that holds the vibration damper had broken and fallen off the previous owner's car.  I bought a new BRABUS damper, a new style main mount for under $100 total (out of Europe) and then had Duncan Iron Works' stainless steel specialist do open canister surgery, repairing the cracked welds from the inside and then closing the canister up again.  It has been on the car for five years, longer than it was on the original owner's car, and it has been good other than the main neck cracked again after 4 years, which was also repaired for $50.  The original SS welding repair cost me about $300.  But the exhaust was free, so it's all good!

...and I still have a barely used (50,000 km, if that) original rear muffler/cat, which I am keeping.

About $685 from germanparts.ca if you reuse your mount.  I believe that is similar to what Glenn quoted me in the fall.

i believe it absorbs the harmonics

kind of similar to chryslers use of large lead alloy weights mounted on rubber in the steering wheels of many models during the eighties(under the horn pads)

Yeah it's not a second mount.  There are already two: the manifold pipe and the underslung holder that is connected to the transaxle is the second mount.

It is illegal.  No cat should equate to less back pressure and a faster spooling turbo.  On a non remapped car I would not be overly concerned about going without.  With a remapped cdi a cat will help to minimize unburned fuel being deposited on the back of the car.
