Hi everyone! My name is Arkian and I recently purchased my first 2006 Smart CDI fortwo cabriolet! It was like love at first sight! I’ve had from Kawasaki ninja all the way to V8’s and this is the funniest vehicle I’ve driven in a while! It has 154000km on it and it was pretty much an impulse buy! I needed something to go back and forth to work and when I saw the ad, I had to check it out....and that’s how we met!

Ive been reading up a lot on them so I’m getting myself familiar with some of the things! The only real issue that it has is I’m not sure exactly what I did, but I held the “open roof” button on the remote and all the sudden the roof made a click (I believe it unlatched, the roof was all the way open but the back window was still up) and from there nothing worked, the roof wouldn’t open or close and the “C” symbol would appear. After a couple of hours of google searching I was able to figure out that I can manually close the soft top and it should click on. It clicked in and I was able to close it but the button doesn’t work and and when I attempt to start the car, I get the “key signal” and I have the press the “open roof” button on the remote until the car beeps than I can start the car. When I start driving the “C” symbol flashes a few times so I’m guessing it’s not clicked in or im

doomh something wrong.

Anyone nes have any suggestions? It’s currently at the shop for an oil change and a safety (might need brakes)

ps: is there ever any meets in the Toronto area? I’m super excited and currently in the process of convincing my wife to get one hahah thanks everyone!  I’ll post some pics it only allows 2mb

Welcome to the club.  Nothing official as far as meet ups in the GTA but I’m just west of Newmarket but leaving for vacation Thursday.  Willys is a friendly guy from the Pefferlaw area and is always looking for an excuse to meeet up for coffee.  The C symbol shows up when the back section of the roof is not latched in either the down or up position.  To start the car hit the unlock button on the remote to turn off the disabler (key symbol) before turning the key on and the car will start.

Ok Arkian I’m back.  You might consider running your car out to London  to see “smart142”.  There are a couple of inexpensive service items that can really improve the drivability of your car if they haven’t been done already.  I’m thinking clutch actuator service and proper adjustment and if you do any highway driving cruise control can be added easily.  He is an enthusiast whose hobby has turned into a full time job.  He also works weekends if that is what you require.   I take my car there and found him to be thorough and inexpensive.

Thanks Nigel! Let’s see if we can make an official one! Lol.

Yea I figured out how to turn the car on, now just trying to figure out how to make the sunroof work. So are you saying I should manually open the full roof and attempt to re latch it? I did hear it latch in. I’m not really sure what the issue is. I didn’t even know it opened all the way

Welcome to the club and or sickness...I hadn't had mine a month and had to buy a second...lol....and like you trying to get the wife to drive it, so far no luck!   As Nigel has said I'm always open to a meet  if you want to chat Smarts etc.....I'm still new at this also...but they aren't that complicated once you get researching.  Make sure you join Evilution and donate the smallest amount to get their tecnical information....just saying . they are the top guys from what i see so far .

Don’t bother with the wife she may never come around.  Brenda will drive mine but she really doesn’t like the ride or the lack of power.

For the roof hold the button beside the shifter and the roof will slide back and stop, then hold the button again for a couple of seconds and you will hear it click and then you can lower the top and latch it.  If you don’t latch you will get the C message.  To raise hold the close button for a couple of seconds listen for the click and get out and raise the top and latch it the you can use the close button to slide the top closed.  I usually just slide the top open and very seldom  lower the back half.  If you hold the convertible button on the remote for a couple of seconds the top will slide open, very helpful to let some of the heat out before you get inside.  You’re quite welcome to look at my owners manual when I get back in three weeks.

Thanks brother yea the problem is I manually closed it and I’m getting the error - I’m pretty sure it’s latched on. I’ll take you up on the manual if I don’t get anywhere - either way smart meet in three weeks should be good!

When the top is working properly, you can remotely press (and hold for a few seconds) and the roof will retract to the back of the car in one smooth motion.  Press and hold for a few seconds again and the top will drop and should click into a locked down position.  If you don't want the top to go all the way back, use the button beside the shifter.  It will allow you to stop the top in any position along the rails.

To put the roof back up, press the roof button on the remote and you should hear a click.  This is the mechanism releasing the roof from its locked down position.  Manually life it up and gently press it slightly forward to lock it into the top rails.  To finish closing the roof, the key must be on and the button beside the shifter MUST be used (safety feature).

You may or may not know that the top rails DO come off easily and store in the tailgate.  On a day when rain is threatening, it is wise to leave them on since it is quicker to raise the roof in the event of a shower.

Thanks for the reply, the problem is I clicked the remote button I heard the click then nothing would work and it wasn’t fully patched off. I couldn’t get the motor to work again when I press the remote button again nothing happens no click so sounds nothing

It's a pity that I didn't know of this yesterday.  I was in my Cabrio in Aurora for a while.  We could have met up and maybe sorted the problem out.

As Nigel suggested, contacting  "Uncle Glenn" in London would probably be the least expensive way to go.  The man knows his stuff and he works weekends if needed.

I’ve reached out to Arkian with my phone numbers if he wants help today, going to Nova Scotia tomorrow.  I’m only about 20 minutes from Richmond Hill.
