recommended oil

I'm sure this topic is already posted somewhere, but here it goes. Sorry if I start a what's better war.

I'm changing the oil in my car.  

What is everyone using?

He is my info. Summers here are mid 20's. I don't plan on using my smart when its really cold in the winter and she will always be stored in a heated garage.

I found a Castrol 5W40 full synthetic at walmart. It has the correct MB # in the spec sheet, but it doesn't say if it is for gas, diesel or both.

I looked for a 5W30 but no luck.

The 0W40 version should return a bit better fuel mileage, if you can get it.

Yes they have a 0w40. What I find odd is that the jug does not say it's for gas or diesel. Are some synthetics for both and the manufacturer just assumes people know?

some are ok for both

 

diesel spec oil in a gasoline engine is extra good

 

gas oil in a diesel is not good

Ok thanks. So as long as it doesn't say " for gas engines". I should be ok.

it has the right mb spec number ....the one you posted is ok for the smart diesel and the smart gas

 

 

i would look for a 0w40 though for winter

 

5w40 or 5w30 or even a 10 would be ok for summer

got my oil.

0w40 euro from walmart.  $12.97 a liter.  meets all MB specs.

i got 3 liters,  somewhere i read 2.9 liters required

2.7L actually.  Canadian Tire often has 0W40 M-1 on sale, at $35 for 4.4 litres, sometimes cheaper.

The 5L Castrol goes on sale for around $30 at CT.

Oil spec is not that critical for these non dpf engines. Any oil suitable for a diesel engine will do as long as you select correct viscosity grade. Mineral oil require shorter change interval.
