· #2 Posted December 4, 2019 · Report post I think you need a STAR machine or dealership...sorry to say....good luck....I personally do not use my auto, it wants to shift too high in the RPM band for my liking....to each their own....
· #3 Posted December 4, 2019 · Report post I can code auto for a pint of good ale but you will need to bring your Smart over here. As already stated you need a Star machine to do it.
· #4 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post Hey....is there a way to reprogram at what RPMs it shifts at with the STAR also...? If you can, I'll be all over that! I would actually use it then....and I'd let the wife use it in auto as she demands it must be used....lazy bugger she is!...lol
· #5 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post Willys Can you program a speed limiter for your wife? 😉😉 Probably more important than her using the Auto. Nigel
· #6 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post She doesn't want to watch the tach to see when to shift as she won't get it right imho....and will bugger it up anyway, so she wants to have auto and that thing wants to shift at 4500 or something rediculous! May as well just drill a hole in the block and wreck it that way than allow it to keep reving that high imho!
· #7 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post Mine shifts at 2500 one to two and about 3000 for the rest under light throttle.

In auto mode ( which I rarely use anyway ) the car shifts about 500 RPM lower than stock under the same type of acceleration. Obviously, the harder you press on the "go" pedal, the higher the revs will be before it shifts until it reaches the limiter.
· #11 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post Not all remaps adjust softouch shifting points - for example, Flying Tiger's doesn't. Which is fine by me, it's rarely used, only in huge cities, which we rarely go to.
· #12 Posted December 5, 2019 (edited) · Report post Willys Next time I see you drive mine and compare. Also I believe tolsen said you can change the settings in Star so the car defaults to Auto rather than Manual. Nigel Edited December 5, 2019 by Nigel

Nigel OK can do, ....default to auto rather than manual so you hit button to get into standard mode not auto? I'll have to try the star and see what it says, but I don't want to upset any tune put into car if the star defaults it back to stock by hitting the default button...? I think I have seen this part of the STAR and thought best leave well enough alone.

My Smart doesn't have the auto shift button on the shifter and it will still upshitt on it's own around the 4200-4500 RPM mark. I've also noticed you can't upstift a gear if you're going to slow. My parts car has the auto shift knob but I'm not going to install it I prefer manual transmission over automatics any day. I drove Toronto for 11 yrs doing deliveries in 3 different manual trans cars averaging 500 km daily. My K car wagon 2.2l was still running at 850,000 kms but the body was falling apart. 1 person likes this
· #15 Posted December 5, 2019 · Report post I too also love a stick shift vehicle...I like being in control of the power........automatic vehicles constantly want to push.....I also did deliveries in a city, Ottawa for numerous years.....basically racing around all day long working on commission......Datsun 510 was my weapon of choice...lol...yep a few decades ago now. Yes I know the car's computer will over ride your shifting to protect it'self, good thing really. The wife can and did drive stick for decades also but now is tired of it after one auto vehicle....she's 60 this coming year so she's earned it I guess...lol Besides she doesn't want to drive the Smart any way, unless forced to if I have her vehicle....lol....and then it would be only in an emergency basis type thing. She says nothing is that important that she needs to drive it and will wait for her car to come home...lol. I would like to get the shift limits lowered in auto from what i remember them to be as I normally shift around the 2000-2500 range not the limits. I drive for fuel numbers now a days not speed or needing to get somewhere in a hurry. 80 MPGs is easy for me to maintain, and I like it...lol

Had a bench when I got it but changed it for a pair of aftermarket pillow back captain chairs out of a conversion van and changed the steering wheel from an Omni as it had a deeper center getting the wheel in a much more comforting position. When you spend 10+ hours a day everyday you want to be comfy as possible. 1 person likes this
· #18 Posted October 27, 2020 · Report post Hi guys, can anyone tell me a bit more about replacing the shifter with a softtouch shifter? Do you have to replace the complete lever or only the knob? I removed the knob from the lever and there doesn't seem to be any place/space for wiring - just a solid shaft. How does that work?
· #19 Posted October 27, 2020 · Report post There is a how to on Evilution. https://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php?menu=electrical&mod=124 Auto works fine in a diesel 450 but not so good in a petrol. Note that you will need some special five pointed Torx security bits to remove SE drive. Your Smart will need to go to a dealer for coding to enable soft touch or you could visit me and have it done for a good pint of ale.
· #20 Posted November 28, 2020 · Report post Here's another guide for those that don't have access to evilution or just want a quick, single page guide: http://www.fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides/fortwo-450/electrical/257-installing-softouch This parts car at the wrecker I have been visiting for a week and removing all the good parts from has the button in the lever, which I assume means it has the auto mode. Was tempted to remove it seeing it'd only cost a few bucks. But the part about having to have the Star system to program it is a big hurdle (maybe someone in Calgary or surrounding area has one?). Also it doesn't help that both myself and wife are chronically allergic to automatics. Still though, for the sake of having the added option to a car that's already fully loaded sounds neat, even if it never gets used. Then I read the part where Willys says it shifts at really high revs. I'm terrified whenever I shift when it hits 4, I couldn't possibly drive a car that shifts at 4,500 rpm, well into the red line zone. Besides, driving autos are a real road hazard. These literally make me want to fall asleep. If only I could add a clutch pedal to the Smart... 1 person likes this

I too drove a 510, a 78, even made deliveries in it. Yes, decades ago. My first car, paid $500 for it. 'Till I replaced with a 84 Scirocco Wolfsburg and never again owned another Asian car (till a couple of years back when we bought a new Nissan Qashqai - only SUV that comes with a manual tranny that was able to tow my boat). Man, I often think of the 510. Haven't seen one in decades. I kid you not, if I come across one I will hug it. May get arrested or punched, but I am hugging it. May even kiss the hood. Willys, if you have pics, please PLEASE post some. What a fab car.
