You think this will not be ok for one two years?

hard to say...my cabrio connector was awful on all three...headlights burned so bad i only had one of them working to control the 2 relays

but my coupe of the same year with more kms on it had a connector that looked brand new with no signs of overheating

i like those relays with fuses..never seen those before either ..thats a good idea

Hi All

Working on the same problem with my 2005 450 @ 170,000 miles. Started giving trouble several months ago with 3 bars on trying to start. Removing battery earth for about 30 seconds cleared the fault and all would be good for about 3 weeks before reoccurring. Always occurred on startup.

Just had work done on it including a new rear wheel bearing fitted and now its permanently got 3 bars ! I've checked the wiring and cannot find any wear and tear where others have, but I noticed the RPM sensor wiring has a black wire disconnected about 2 inches up from the plug. It's only a two pin plug and Red and White wires appear OK, so is the black wire not used ? It's also visible in vxbodel's picture posted earlier in this thread. I don't have a E10 socket in my toolbox but will get one on Monday to try removing the gear selector and/or motor. Rocking it to try and free things up has no effect. Car is in Neutral.

Don't want to drag it 5 hours South to Glasgow to get looked at unless I really have to.

might be better off contacting Tolsen

he's probably not too far from you

I've always found his advice to others very helpful in the past, but I've not been able to PM him as yet. Hopefully manage to catch up with him soon, he's only about an hour South of me.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks LooseLugNuts and Leadwing.

I think the PM function has worked, and I'm off work tomorrow so I'll carry on looking for the problem and report further. Still not sure about the extra black wire to the RPM sensor, but I'll look for volts on it tomorrow and if none take it to chassis to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again

Nig

Hi all. Well I’ve removed Inspected and replaced the gear motor, clutch actuator, gear position indicator and Sam unit from my 450.

All wiring looms I can get at have been cleaned and seem ok with no visible damage. All fuses fine in Sam unit. Still getting the 3 bars when ignition turned on and only brief mechanical noise from an engine actuator that I can’t trace. No starter engagement. Without test gear I’m now running out of ideas, and there is no smart specialist I can find (other then Mercedes in Elgin or Aberdeen) closer than Sam in Carstairs 140 odd miles away.
With 170k odd miles on the clock and 15 years of use, it looks like I’ll be better off getting another younger one, probably a 451, and scavenging what I can off mine before sadly waving it goodbye.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice, and if I find a cause while stripping it down I’ll let you know. ☹️

I don't have time right now to re-read it all, did you check the single wire going to the starter that tells it to energize?  Also have you checked all ground wires etc? Do you have a SAM or ZEE or whatever you guys over the pond have? IF a SAM take it apart and check for known bad pins....I'm short on time.....back later.

Thanks. I'll check the starter motor and report back, but I don't think it would bring up 3 bars before turning ign to start ?
