"Brake Shield"

4 posts in this topic

I was about to look into fixing the bearing on my 2006 Smart Fortwo when my mechanic (Excellent fellow up here in Ottawa, Don Fournier) suggested to look at the "Brake Shield"

Would this be something on the front or the back that might go or get loose?

front splash guards

they rot out

tolsen has pics here somewhere ...he uses plastic plates instead of metal

the back has drums so it has a stiffer backing plate instead of just a thin splash shield (because it needs to transfer brake force thru anchors and wheel cyclinders)

You can buy these for roughly $40 each from the dealership.  Yes pricey but if you can afford them and then paint them with good rust paint they should outlast your use of the car  I bet.

Ok ... jacked up each quarter and checked.   Front Driver side bearing is probably toasted.   New part in from RockAuto for Friday.   Got the Grinder ready for the leftover bit and a "Fun" Friday afternoon.

<Sarcasm>Woohoo!</Sarcasm>

;)
