3rd AB Smart Car Rally Planning?

27 posts in this topic

So this is the 3rd time we're doing this! Hopefully we'll get even more participation!

Current Edmonton area locals have expressed interest in a camping road trip. I'm floating the idea of keeping it near Jasper/Hinton/Canmore/Banff as those who don't care for camping can find lodging nearby.

I'm thinking of a 3 day wkend - Friday-Sat-Sun sometime in June (personally my May is all booked up). Jasper is usually easier to find lodging than the Banff area as it is way less busy. I'm proposing that we do a trip up hwy93.

Day 1) Drive down to Canmore and hang out for the day

Day 2) Drive up Hwy93 and stop along the way for things to do and stop in Jasper/Hinton

Day 3) Hang for the day in Jasper/Hinton and then head home.

Some of the activities that I think would be fun along hwy93 and hwy16

- Hot Springs (Miette?)

- Athabasca Falls

- Athabasca Glaciers

- Sky Walk

Ideas? Camping might be a bit tougher in our little cars. Just throwing ideas out there.

Wish I was closer.  It would be a good shakedown cruise for Willys though, I’ll suggest it to him.

Sounds great, I was wondering if June 16 to 18 might work for the rally?

Awesome and thanks again for starting us out @stickman007, but I am out of Province for work potentially for June 24 to July 2 and definitely June 25-30, but I'd likely be game otherwise and bring a plus 1 and who depends on kids exam schedules and such. Love any of the ideas and would attempting camping for night somewhere for sure. I think we could swing a tent, bag of clothes, and essentials easily in the back. I make Costco runs in mine all the time despite the looks in the parking lot. :)

Hmmmm......???????

A shake down run in which vehicle.....is the question.....a freshly rebuilt gas miser or the new to the fleet gas guzzler which is headed that way in Sept.....lol   I may be able to sleep inside my lengthened SmartCar.....If so I may be able to swing it, if the wife gives the OK for two cross country adventures in one year.

So if those interested so far is good with the location....let's set a time.

So date set for Jun16-18th.

Day1)

- meet for dinner in Canmore (reservations will need to be made depending on our group size)

Day2)

- coffee/breakfast (Beamer's coffee or Rocky Mountain Bagel Company or ....suggestions?)

- lots of view points along hwy93 to stop and take pics

- detour to Abraham Lake/Crescent Falls (maybe picnic lunch around there?

- Saskatchewan Crossings, they have cafe there (expensive though)

- Sunwapta Falls (has cafe and gift shop)

- Athabasca Glaciers (the hike up to the glaciers or just the visitor's centre)

- Skywalk? (personally not interested, but if the group would like...(expensive again, touristy, but cool)

- Horseshoe Lake (Cliff Jumping?)

- Athabasca Falls

- Jasper for dinner

Day3)

- Free to do whatever

- Miette Hot Springs

- JPL hikes

Lets start a tentative list: (reply to the thread and I'll edit the list)

1) Izzy and Alex (Stickman007)

2) Robin (Iratama)

3) Jason (Avenger95)

4) Jeff and Shannon (WhiteyJr)

Hotels booked for the trip.

Jun16 - Canmore, Bighorn Inn & Suites

Jun17 - Hinton, Twin Pine Inn & Suites

If the weather looks good, I might cancel the hotels and attempt to tent it...we'll have to see

Dang, wish I could go. We're going to Europe for 6 weeks this fall and that's eating up all the vacation....

Have fun.

Sadly, I wouldn't be able to join until Saturday, June 17th, as have a critical work event that Friday evening that is akin to a convocation ceremony for our students. :( Perhaps I could catch up to you but I'm sure that'll take some fandangling so Izzy, I'll connect and see what I can arrange. I wouldn't be able to leave until Saturday early morning though for sure. If nothing else, could always meet in Hinton that evening, which would still be a blast for the convoy back! Sounds like a blast! And agree with @gilrob, a Horseshoe Lake cold water plunge would be a lot of fun!

Hello all,

Sorry for the late reply, Myself and my better half will be there again this year.  I am ok with camping as well or a hotel is fine if it's not too pricey.  I look forward to seeing everyone!

What's everyone's thoughts on all of us joining a WhatsApp group for this trip?

It would make it easier to communicate during the trip, and everyone stays updated together.
