How long can I expect my 2005 diesel to last?

11 posts in this topic

Bought it used about  10 years ago at 108,000 km and now it has 123,000 km.  Don't run it in winter and most drive it around town about 6 months of the year.

Got it used from a dealer in abbotsford I think and always went into limp mode, so cleaned out the egr valve back then and lubed the turbo arm and it has

been running like a champ ever since.  Every year I change the oil and filter as well.

If it makes it to 2070 then it is likely to last for ever. I think diesel will be banned before then.

I think Tolsen is well over 200k and, in my opinion, will continue. It is all about looking after it.

I predict I will be 6ft under long before then so I think I'm safe!

Nothing much goes wrong so I just drive it respectfully and do the oil and filter thing.  I was curious

if the diesels have some average km where they just about fall apart even if well maintained.

My first smart made it to 247,274 km when it was rear-ended into oblivion; it was likely to make it to 300+. Not remapped. EGR was always fine. It was driven year-round and rust was just starting, for example, surface rust on the plug on the rear wheel well.

The one I have now is never driven in the salt and has just over 175,000 km (remapped) and I expect this will shorten the drivetrain life somewhat. We shall see. For now, the engine's still strong.

I think a well cared for, not winter driven cdi should last 350,000+ km without a major failure.

You're getting great life out of your cars and even 200k would be amazing for me if it lasted that long.  So far the only thing not working is the AC and there is an airbag light that stays on the instrument cluster, otherwise it's been awesome for the time we've had it.

Hmmm...?  My beater is well over the 200Km mark now and I'm sure it was treated poorly before I got it. The guy I bought it from beat the stink out of it when I went for a test drive!  He asked if I wanted to drive it and I said that if it was still alive after he had finished driving it, I'll take it...lol.
It all comes down to maintenance  and not driving it for 5 minutes then shutting it off before it gets warm enough to get a good heat cycle.

I expect they will last if they are looked after....just as most vehicles will.

None of the petroleum products will be banned imho, just that they won't support the vehicles that use it so you won't be able to repair them easily.  Most people will simply scrap them as what is happening to Smarts now, the Dealerships simply put a zero on most repairs and that instantly gets the owners to say scrap it and go to another model etc.  Once people stop listening to the climate crisis BS and understand the planet is simply evolving as it has been doing since conception and we all won't be fried like over cooked potato chips etc, things should settle down so to speak.  But this is a topic not allowed so I'll stop.

I just came back from out west and up to the Arctic Ocean.....you see what is really happening once away from the big cities. Life is still going on as normal. Stop listening to the news.
