Second Annual West Coast smart Show & Shine! Sun July 30

169 posts in this topic

Hi gang!

Many of you will remember the First West Coast smart Show and Shine - well, it is time for the sequel!

I would like to hear your suggestions for improvements over the first event (be gentle, it was my first event and I planned it nearly solo).

Off the top: I want to hold it at the end of July, at a single venue.

What have you guys seen at other shows you would like to see at ours? What did you enjoy about the first show?

If it was in the last 2 weeks of August I could make it, but if July is better, don't reconsider the timing.

At this point, suggestions are being accepted. I need to work it out with my company still as well, so nothing is written in stone - yet.

June, July, August or EARLY september. Past that and we run into rain again... and in my opinion, that was the ONLY thing that went wrong last year! You did a great job and it was a fantastic event! Best of the year in my view.

Only thing I suggest is that you come up with a category I can win! :)

I liked the dual venue idea myself. Gave us an excuse to go on a parade.

S_mack: I'm sure we can find a reason for a parade!

I M SMRT: you must never speak of that again.

Ok, so the initial thought from my company is that a single venue is what they would like to support this year.

Parking at River Rock is going to be tight in the months ahead due to the RAV construction around the site. I did like the tent and BBQ at Hastings, but I was thinking maybe this time asking for space at Boulevard or Fraser Downs.

It would be fun to do a parade before the event from a scenic location to the venue. And yes, this time (groan) I'll make sure there are no damned marathons in front of us. :banghead:

I don't know... I thought the marathon was kinda neat. Added a "clash of the titans" kind of feel to it. I think we could have taken them if the police hadn't intervened.

Whatever you come up with it, you know I'm there 100%! I had a blast last time!

lol. I'm sure you will be there Steven! If memory serves, you were the "Belle of the ball" with all your gizmos.

If you said, "no commercial interests" I'd still be there 100% Gent!!!

While I appreciated the opportunity to answer people's questions and hand out few goodies, it was just FUN!!!!

- Steven

ps. With that said... last year we had that impromptu prize-giving of lights because that's all I had on hand really. I'd be interesting in going at that a little bigger if you thought it could help with drawing people.

Fraser Downs would be great, especially for anyone who has never been to a harness racing event.

2 possible drawbacks -

There isn't much in it to ask River Rock to suport an event at Cloverdale.

Hardly seems fair to ask them to sponsor.

Unless of course both Casinos are operated by the same parent company?

Harness racing ends on Saturday PM - May 13th.

'merryk' may know when the fall schedule starts up again.

S_mack: That's very kind Steven! I'm sure anything you donated would draw a tonne of people. Perhaps we can get you to do a presentation as well.

Fred J: Yep. Same company. I work for Great Canadian Gaming. Where if we don't own it already, they're trying to sell it to us. :biglaugh:

Even if there is no live racing at Fraser, there are always simulcasts and the casino. If the meet is at Fraser, even if I'm not there, my car could be. I believe racing starts again this fall in September.

It would be fun to line smarts up behind the starting gate and race them. Maybe even have the announcer call the race.

The plan still to stay at River Rock? then depart to wherever for whatever and a parade?

I've been speaking with the Director of Sales, and he is looking into the logistics and cost for us. They believe that we can do the event at River Rock again!

This time, it will be on Sunday, July 30th 2006. We will have a BBQ on the riverside deck (North of the lobby - beside Dockside Cafe) and the cars will be displayed nearby. Prizes, trophies, great food and great company - what more can a smartie ask for?

This year, I will be collecting a small amount from all attendants so that we have hard numbers going into the event for planning.

A drive would be great. I think in the evening, after the awards? We could zip down the 99 to Peace Arch park. Suggestions?

Ian you are amazing, if the event is even close to the fun of last year it will be great. If you need any help, please feel free to ask.

Steven: No - you rock. I merely enable the rocking. lol

mkatz: Yes please!

I would like some volunteers to help out! If we get enough bodies, we can rotate the desk and parking duties so that everyone can have fun.
