Turns out it was the fuel pump that failed.

Zap had a new pump sent from Europe at no charge. Car is fixed and back on the road

I am going to file with G & K's warranty administrator to see if I can get paid for the labor.

Glad to hear your smart is on the road again. Was it much hassle putting the pump in? Did you talk to any local Mercedes dealers for assistance or just Zap? Somebody should certainly pay the labor.
