Northwest Territories...

72 posts in this topic

Hmm...

Has anyone been up north before?

Anyone try it with a smart yet?

Can it be done?

If so what would be needed to do a winter trip up north other then winter tires and snow chains?

I'd love to do a tour up there and check out the Northern Lights...

Also what's the availability of diesel up there?

Most likely I'd consider going to Yellowknife...

Hum..

I'd do it. I would not do it alone (only one smart car)

Might be a really fun trip. I know their are quiet a few streaches where fuel is sparse. I would not go when the silverstreamers go....we'd be rocked to death.

E3, can you bring 2-3 weeks worth of pizza? Just say its the biggest delivery you ever had, and don't come back :bustamove:

I wouldn't do it for this winter...

More then likely I'd go for the winter after...

It would make for quite the stress test on both man and machine...

And for the pizza? Maybe I'll attach a sled to the back of the car as a trailer... The nI can ship all the pizza you want!

Recommended equipment for that trip in an average vehicle is:

- TWO spare tires.

- Gerry can of extra fuel

This is with a car that can perhaps get more distance out of a tank than we could. There are large sections of gravel road, I suspect our mileage on gravel wouldn't be great.

Also, COUNT on getting at least one rock scar in your windshield.

Hmm... Drove to Inuvik in June. Loved it! Best trip we've ever taken!

Haven't driven to Yellowknife in the winter, though. I'd definitely recommend a spare tire! What month you talking??

I'm thinking February '07 or something like that...

I wanna go in the DEAD of winter where it is absolutely cold...

When it starts to become a case of survival vs vacation...

Now THAT would make for an adventure!

Just what you need Eddie, additional hazards in the name of adventure!

Well in Feb there would likely be no problems on the ice bridge...

Why don'tcha just go to Grande Prairie in Feb? That oughtta cool ya! Lots of adventure on the Fox Creek stretch of the hwy!! LMAO

you're nuts!

I still retain a memory way back when I was a wee tot in grade 1...

We used to go fishing at Carson-Pegasus (Big McLeod) Lake outside of Whitecourt...

Well one day we went to hang out at Fox Creek...

I saw all the adults jump into the water and go for a swim...

I followed them and jumped in as well... I cannot swim...

It took them a while to get me out... And they had to keep a tight grip on me cause I think I tried to go back to the river...

News flash

14 smart cars found frozen solid in a train half way to alaska.

Hum.... Not good. I could see if we could tear out the back seats and burn them for warmth. But I am not sure that most service stations will be open.

That's a trip I have always wanted to do. You did this, THIS June? Or just 'A' June?

(And you know my second question if it was THIS June...)

I'm looking for a place in Canada that rents these:

http://www.acrterrafix.com

I've only found online US outits that rent them...

And I don't wanna spend $800 US funds on a locator beacon for a 1 week trip or so...

Though the one time if I ever use it would make it definaltely worth it...

But again, I'd rent one for sure if I could!

Especially seeing as cell phones might not work the greatest up north...

Well I'm game to going up North. Just give me lots of notice.

Still wounding about the heavy rock's on the road. We might need to do some modding to stop chips.

I hope I have A smart by then. This is what I consider fun. :tease: This sounds great, I would have to drive from NY first, would be a warm up for me and nice break in period for the car! That is, if they ever sell them here!

C'mon. Its no biggie. Some of us even live here.

BTW: Cross Canada trips should start in Beaver Creek YT, or Inuvik NWT. Victoria isn't even very far west.

The Alaska Highway is all paved, the Klondike Highway is all BST to Dawson, the Dempster is fairly rough, but if three guys on Vincents can do it, so can you. Sometimes I think that the centre of the universe is out of touch with the outlying portions.
