2005-2006 Smart 450 Cdi Internal Engine Failures

MikeT

Since the first smart 450 diesels arrived in Canada in mid-2004, there has been enough time for serious engine issues to crop up. This is a list of the known engine failures in 2005 and 2006 model smart cdi diesels, with the goal of summarizing the issues and the circumstances. It could prove useful to those who experience a similar problem or just want to know what to has happened to others.

Note that some cost sharing on an out-of-warranty repair may be possible, at the sole discretion of the Mercedes-Benz/smart dealer; however there is no prospect of any assistance in engine repairs for cars that have passed the 160,000 km mark. Factors considered when a dealer decides to assist with such a repair are the customer history (how many cars bought, has dealer been used for most services), the apparent mode of engine failure and the proximity to the 160,000 km cutoff.

Please follow the following format when adding new information to this article. Ideally they can be added in order of km, lowest to highest:

User Feedback

My 2005 Pure has 114,000 km and is dead. I talked with the vancouver MB service department and after telling them about loss of power, extreme hesitation, they said it is likely not worth fixing. Then talked to some reps from MB Canada at the electric car show and they named the problem it likely was (transmission failure or another part that I can't recall the name of but they said it was about $900 just for the part) and again said to throw the car away.

I find this very upsetting - I'm the original owner and the car cost 25,500 new (convertible). It has always had proper service. I've asked MB Vancouver to diagnose at no charge as it seems a car of this caliber should outlive the mileage and years that this car has on it. They are reluctant to do so and are checking with the service manager. I don 'to want to let this go as I feel in this case I'm not receiving good service from them.

I love my car - any suggestions appreciated. The car will no longer even turn over. When you turn the key there is a sound produced but the engine won't catch.

perhaps we need to start taking these dealers or MB to small claims court. Even though there is a warranty that has expired, there is a reasonable expectation that your vehicle will continue to provide many more years of service. Might be worth the 200 dollars or so to stand in front of a judge and make these car dealers and manufacturers stand behind what they sell and build. They get away with it because we let them.
