We at SmartCar Performance are now dropping our Renntech ECU upgrades and are replacing it with a better system.

We can now upgrade both your ECU and your TCM (both 451 and 450 models). TCM is your Transmission Control Module. Here is what they do (from the company that does this):

"We have a team of software developers who work with us and tune ECU's for all types of vehicles, from trucks to high performance cars such as the Porsche 997 Turbo. We connect our equipment to your ECU and download the current files. We only modify the existing ECU files, this results in a better tune than simply replacing your ECU files.

We can remove vehicle speed limiters, adjust ignition timing and fuel maps, throttle plate ratios, raise rev limiters, or rewrite just about any map in the modern ECU.

We never have and never will compromise on mapping of ECU's. You can be totally reassured that mapping your ECU won't result in damage to your engine, we still build in tolerances to ensure your vehicle is totally reliable, everyday.

We back up all ECU's before the tuning is done, so at anytime the software can be reverted should you need to restore it back to the original version
."

The company is DPTune. they have built a reputation as a one of the country's up and coming performance tuning firms. Their craft has been developed over years of testing, giving the experience needed when it comes to re-flashing your ECU. They partnered up with Piasini Engineering in 2009 which increased their knowledge base to handle any tuning situation.

They are the only company in the United States to offer the new Transmission Control Module reflash for the Smart!!

They have done all the Dyno testing, which I am acquiring right now so I can share with the community. They are far more reliable and definitely more knowledgeable than any other company that I have dealt with in this application.

The best part is that they have a Money Back Guarantee. So if you are not satisfied, they will put your ECU/TCM back to stock for no charge. Not many companies offer that.

Pricing is competitive. I should have this in the next few days. But please feel free to contact me with any questions.

The TCM is located under the driver's seat. You have to remove the drivers seat and there is a panel below that. The TCM is located below the panel.

I have an under-seat drawer and never would have thought to look there. Although I'm pretty sure it would mean also taking up the one-piece carpet. ... Learn something new every day!

I'd sure like to know how DP Tune/Piasini/Whatever manages to get 31% more horsepower and 110% more torque out of a naturally-aspirated 451....

135Nm is too much. The transmission and oem clutch can only handle 110-120 IIRC.

Transmission is controlled by the ECU which is fitted to the side of the airbox. There is nothing under the seat.

I have just visited their website and read this:
NOTE
Modifying any part of your smart car may void the manufacturers warranty and may also effect the smog control devices on your vehicle.
SmartCar Performance offers this service with the understanding that this remap will only be used on cars that are for off road use only.
I agree 100% with above statement as it is my opinion that remaps should be banned but wonder why this statement was not mentioned in the original post.

450 versus 451, this is a 451 mod I think

The OP is offering for both: "We can now upgrade both your ECU and your TCM (both 451 and 450 models)."

Like I said, I have no problem with aftermarket vendors using this section. But I do have to wonder about claims. Remember the vendor who claimed some pretty impressive 451 gains just by swapping the intake? Well, how do they get an additional 22 hp and more than double the torque of a North American n-a 451 by just remapping?

Here is the answer from my Vendor:

"To answer your questions of how we get there, simple, Smart left a lot on the table with the factory tuning. We adjust the fuel maps, along with the timing tables to make the 451 come to life. And Yes, in fact we did do the pcm and tcm of Larry's car. Now thats a different animal to say the least, but it was to prove a point. The engines seem to be able to take 8500 with no problems. But in truth, I would not drive my 451 beyond 7400-7600 on a daily basis.

At any rate sorry again for the confusion, but I think if you guys give it a shot, you will love it!......dyno"

For the 451 model the TCM is under the seat. I will double check where the TCM is for the 450 model.

Very interesting. It would be great to see some verified dyno runs; all the maps I've seen make an extra 4 to 10 hp and about 5 to 12 ft-lb over the North American 451's 71 hp and 68 ft-lb. I'm curious how they can make 22 hp and 75 ft-lb more without a turbo. Even the BRABUS turbos in Europe make just 98 hp and 103 ft-lb.

This is from my Vendor:

"Sorry, I sent Cisco the wrong data, my fault on that. The US 451 will see an increase in power from 71 crank hp to 89-91 crank hp and about 18-22lbft tq.

We are still sorting out the website, and the guys doing the web work is not a car guy, again sorry."

Apparently, their website guy goofed. I copied the numbers from their website and I knew it was a little high. They do push the fact that you get your money back if you are not satisfied. Most companies would not do that.

That sounds more reasonable. Those are good numbers! I know Piasini knows their stuff (a friend uses the Piasini map analyzer to develop his VAG tunes). I'd love to give your 451 a try. Hmmm.... maybe a trip out west is in order. smile.gif

I'm guessing that the 450 reference is for the 698 cc gasser though.

Actually, we don't do it here in California. You would have to mail your ECU and TCM to our guy in Texas. When you are ready email me at: smartcar.performance@gmail.com

ECU only: $450
TCM only: $300
ECU & TCM: $650

They don't suggest doing TCM only because the shifting depends on how the engine is programmed.
