ClubsmartCar has prepared a comprehensive Registry of all smart 450s (1998-2006 models) that we are aware of in North America.  We certainly have all 10,239 of the Canadian 450s, and we are making headway on adding the approximately 1,300 US 450s that were converted to meet US DOT certification by G&K in California.

In compiling the data within the Registry, we have added information concerning the colours and options that the cars spotted in person or on the Internet are known to have, whether they have been in collisions or have been declared “Salvage”, “Scrapped”, “Rebuilt”, or whether the engine is known to have had a serious internal failure.  This information has been collected from various sources.  It may therefore be of variable quality.  However, we hope that you find it interesting, and useful.

We are also looking to have updated information added from time to time, and in this quest, any information that you may be able to contribute may be submitted, and may be displayed after the content is reviewed.

As time and circumstances allow, we will be adding the 451 and eventually the 453 model to the Registry.

The Canadian 450 registry can be found HERE, or by following the "Car Registries" menu at the top of the page.

For those who aren't aware, Club smart Car is operated and governed by a board of directors.  The current board is made up of Leadwing, Mike T, jwight, Francesco, smartzuuk, and myself.  Despite having a board of directors, Club smart Car is not a legal entity to itself.

What does this mean?  Individuals own different parts of the site, and if something were to happen, we would lose control.  TFM, the site founder, owns the domain names.  The server space is handled by SmartieParts.  I own the license for Invision Power Board.  In addition, we have been raising funds using Google Adsense in order to afford the various things we have to pay for.  Right now, the money from those ads feeds straight into my personal bank account.  If I made a run for it, there'd be nothing anyone could do, and the money would be in my pocket.  On the flip side of that, if our ads suddenly became super profitable, the CRA would suddenly start knocking on my door and I would be responsible for dealing with that.

Because of all of this, if the Board of Directors were to change, there would be a lot of transfer work necessary in changing over names.  Ideally, we would form Club smart Car into a Non-Profit Organization that would be able to own these various things in it's own name.  Therefore, before we start looking for nominations for a future Board of Directors, the current board would like to investigate the process to move towards incorporation.

This investigation will involve looking at:
  • How much money is necessary to initially become a Non-Profit Organization
  • How much money is needed to keep ourselves as a NPO (Eg. Any annual costs, potentially including having someone file our club taxes)
  • Where should we incorporate: Provincially (Probably either Ontario or BC), or Nationally (Canada)
  • What is the process for incorporation depending on where we want to incorporate?
  • Our board is fairly loosey-goosey right now.  How much additional red tape would there be after becoming an NPO?
  • What legal implications are there?
  • What real advantages would incorporation give us?
  • Do we need to be a real named corporation, or would we be fine with just having a numbered company?

Because of all these questions and the amount of investigation necessary, we would like to form an Incorporation Task Force of members to assist in this work.  This job won't be for the faint of heart - We're looking for a team of dedicated individuals with good reading comprehension skills, who are willing to spend some real time helping out.  Previous experience with incorporation (or just general legal experience) would be a huge plus.  Interested parties can post in the comments below.

Welcome to the "News" section of Club smart Car!

Our previous "News" section was simply the "Front Page News" section of the forums, but only certain people could post new topics there.  In addition, it was generally news articles pulled from other sites.  With this new system, anyone can make a news article (Which will still have to be approved, to avoid spam) which will then show up on the front page.

In addition to standard news articles, we'd love to see blog-like content getting posted.  We don't want to just post other news articles, we'd like to GENERATE the news!  We want to see peoples opinions on new colours, special editions, car availability - Anything that people might find interesting and you'd want to see on the front page.

Organizing a big smart event?  Write an article for the front page!  Setting up a group buy?  Front page it!  A truly special car goes up for sale with some history, like one of the Canada 1 cars?  Time to write an article.  Got some back-channel info?  Article.

Likewise, you'll occasionally see posts like this one, with news about Club smart Car itself!  There's a few more pieces of news coming about CsC in the next week or two, so keep your eye open for those.

We've got a few categories that articles can be placed in, but if something isn't there that you think should be, just let me know and we can see what makes sense.  Give it a shot!
