Hey everyone, is it possible to make the rear tires off a 450 fit on the front? (with the rim of course)

or if not, are there wider tires that fit on the stock steelie rims? I need new summer tires so I'm looking through my options

thanks smile.gif

The 450 rear rims are offset too deeply to fit on the front. You can, as a number of us have done, get a pair of Roadster front steel wheels for the front - they fit very nicely - and then you can put rear (175) tires on those.
E.g. Roadie front rims about $85 each.

I have had Roadster front steelies with wider tires on my car for a few years now and the handling is much improved.

Alternatively, you can use the wider (155) tires that come on the 451 on your stock front steelies. This will give you somewhat improved handling without buying new rims.

Or... you can get a full set of Roadster front and rears and put 175 on front and 195 on the back. This combination is highly recommended, as it retains the "stagger" designed into the car for oversteer control.
E.g. Eddy offers a full set of Roadie rims, including excellent 175/195 Vredestein Quatrac All-season tires, mounted, for about $900.

If I have front roadster rims and rear 450 steelies, do they look different enough to look weird?

Silver will look noticably different, but as said, full size wheels covers will hide that...

but you should consider just buying a whole package with tires aready on

perhaps you can sell off all your other wheels/tires and just go to one set of all seasons

the Vredesteins will work pretty good in snow

I park my smart for the winter, and the tires I have now are pretty well worn out, wouldnt be worth anything to anyone.

I have two brand new rears, so I want to get 2 roadster fronts and get 2 more rears, so I'll finally have a nice summer setup smile.gif

That is the least expensive way to get into wider tires on the 450.

Instead, you might want to consider buying a pair of 195/50/15s. Put those on your stock rear steelies (yes, they'll fit) and use those new rear 175/55/15s you already have on the new roadie fronts! Not sure what tires you have now, but if you can match them up pretty close, that would be a great-handling combination.

Picked up a set of Roadster front and rear rims (thanks Dennis), so now the hunt begins for what tires to use. I have two new standard rear bridgestone 175/55/R15. Will these tires also fit on the roadster rears? or are there any specific 195/50/R15 tires that are recommended?

Thanks smile.gif

Hi !
When steelies were mounted on a Roadster/Roadster Coupé
the OEM size was 185-55-15 all around. You could use them
on Your smart m/450 with almost no problems. For the fronts
You may shims out the front fenders forward a little bit. The
rear ones can be widened 15 mm each with adaptors.

Good Luck !

KfL :-)

So without doing modifications or adding spacers would it be best to go with the 185/55r15 on rear and 175/55r15 on front? (because I already have those)

what's the difference between 185 ad 195? Is it the tire height?

The wider the tire, the taller the sidewall, if the aspect ratio (say 55) is the same. Taller sidewall = larger diameter and of course Pi times that is the change it makes to circumference. Mixing up tire circumferences may cause ESP confusion so it's best to stay with OE (Europe) type sizing if you are going wider, or OE smart sizing from one of the other fortwo-based vehicles like the roadster.

You have what I presume are Bridgestone B340s (175/55/15) for the front. Maybe consider Conti Premium Contact 195/50R15 for the rear. There are other brands and styles of 195/50/15 but they are mostly ultra high performance and I feel they might exacerbate the designed-in over-steer to0 much.

If you look around a bit, you may find that certain vendors have reduced the price of the Premium Contacts to about the same as the lower-tier ProContacts. Also get a quote from your dealer. They might price-match if you're lucky!

HTH,
Bil senile.gif

Oh... and à propos Mike's comment: 175/195 is the OE profile/stagger for the Roadie wheels IIRC.

I was thinking more of the 16s that were on OE roadster spikelines, which is one of the wheels that Eddy sells.

Like the man said, the B340's are ok for the front, but I wouldn't spend money on them for the rears. IMHO they are a really crappy tire.
