Yes the Smart Bounces off...But did you see the Toyota Yaris that looks BIG fold up like tin foil (including the passenger area) on the same site.

I'll keep my Smart Thank You.

Ummm...... actually the contents of the car is what matters not the sheetmetal - and in the case of the smart - it tends to win - out of all the real world accidents in Canada there have yet to be (thank goodness) AFAIK any fatalities.

Cheers,
Cameron

Accidents are too random to make an absolute statement. For example, If I was to go into a concrete pillar, I'd like the crumple zones of the C class, if I'm going to be hit by an tall SUV I'll take the squareness, height and roof strength of the smart to ensure I don't end up with a flattened roof and an SUV over top. An awful lot of injuries and fatalities are due to roll-overs, and there's no vehicle I'd rather be in than a smart for that.

Plus the brakes and maneuverability of the smart could transform a fatal high-speed head-on into a mere terrifyingly close call.

Everyone always forgets that the smart is so agile, small, and stops on a dime that as a target it's so much more unlikely to get in an accident in the first place.

The C 300 is so fast that it's potentially way LESS safe than a smart. A poor driver can get into a heaping helping of trouble with that car, moreso than with a smart.

If you buy your car to crash it into things and nothing else, then yeah - of the two, get the C Class.

I find it amusing, that the 'Toyota' guy, is questioning the safety of the smart! (smart isn't the one with all the re-calls)

Both the C class and the smart share a lot of safety features which Mercedes is noted for - but smart takes it further - with the concept of force transfer, intergal roll cage, mass shedding, occupant spatial retention - and other features. So if I had my choice - I would be in the smart not the C class. But hey - if you figure bigger is safer - just because - go for it - spend the extra 20k or so.

Cheers,
Cameron

Npe. smrt is ecnmy AND safty. Tyota is ecnmy nt sfty.

Smart isn't even economy, IMHO. At least not "econo-box" economy. It is a high-tech, very safe vehicle and you pay for that. I don't think many owners in here would say the car is super economical to own and maintain. dunno.gif

Very true, Bil.
It should read 'fuel economy AND safety'.

Back to topic. Two things:

The first time I clicked on that video link I didn't see the caption at the start that rates the cars collision performance ---- in this case "poor" for the smart. Has that been added by somebody? Who?

The second is a question about who set up this crash test. Was it originally a Mercedes test? It seems odd that any automaker would crash two of it's own products into one another. It will always make one of them look relatively bad compared to the other.

If I remember correctly, this was an IIHS test done some time last year. They also crashed a Yaris into a Camry and a Fit into an Accord with similar results. I found it somewhat peculiar at the time that they didn't crash an Aveo or Cobalt into a Malibu, a Focus into a Fusion or a Caliber into a Sebring. These "tests" smacked of (automotive) jingoism.

This test shows that c class is safer than smart in that type of an accident.

I would say it just shows that the smart and the C Class deal with accident damage in different ways....

Sniffs the air - smells slightly like troll.....
