I am Mike, mainly a French car enthusiast from WAY back. Luckily the smart is made in France

In 2002 I learned that smart -might- be coming to Canada, so I test drove a European 2002 gasoline cabriolet in Victoria (July 2002) and a few days later a bay grey metallic EU gas coupe in Nanaimo. Impressed, we put $500 down on the off chance that the car might be actually arriving in Canada in 6 months to a year.

Then we waited and waited...updates trickled in...there are problems with the fuel system....more waiting....

At the begining of January 2004 we pulled the plug and seriously considered a Toyota Corolla. Then (saved by the bell) the formal announcement that the cdi was coming was made in February 2004! So we waited until April 17th, when we test drove a cdi cabrio. Impressed, we re-deposited our $500 and got in line again.

I thought we might be getting our car as soon as October, but that was not to be. Official prices were released in August and we made our choices. We finally got the car in January 2005, more than 900 days since the initial deposit was made. The wait is worth it!

Congratulations and kudos to Mercedes-Benz Canada for deciding to import this car!

I've been a diesel lover since the early 70's after owning a 1955 AC WD45 diesel tractor.

You begin to respect the durability, reliability, and efficiency of the diesel.

	I next bought a 1983(brand new)Mazda B2200 diesel that lasted 19years.

My next purchase was a 1986 Toyota Landcruiser 4l diesel in 1989 that I still own and has 460,000km.

In 1997 I bought a 1982 MB SD300 Turbo diesel that I have enjoyed restoring. It was easy to recognize the quality that Mercedes puts into their products. That was when I became interested in the Mercedes Benz A class and followed the development of the smart.

I never beleived that the smart would be brought to North America where the big is beautiful philosophy rules. On Nov.1 2002 I was literally stopped in my tracks when I spotted a smart parked in front of the MB dealer in London. I was all over that car and even talked the manager into giving me a ride and the next day a short test drive. That convinced me so I put down a $500 deposit even though the car was not scheduled to be brought to Canada.

I went through two salesman and still no news of the smart coming so the dealer refunded my deposit in Jan 2004. The salesman told me that if the smart wasn't going to the USA it would never come to Canada because we're such a small market. So off I go on a trip with the boys and I get a phone call from my wife because the MB President of Canada had announced that the smart would be coming to Canada and I was put back on the list to receive the smart.

I placed my order for my custom car in Jun2004 and she was delivered on the 13th of Dec.2004. I am still thrilled with the smart and find it to be an engineering marvel that meets and exceeds all my needs and expectations. It is indeed a passion and her name is Gina. I now have 11,500kms on my baby and she continues to get a nightly bath. Did I mention that the smart can change your lifestyle.

Anyways that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Luckily I've found a few other smartaholics in London that share the passion so I know I'm not alone in the way I think. Hope to see you on the road.

I just brought my 2005 red/grey Cabrio home from N. Van yesterday. With all that “look at me” red it’s quite an eye catcher! Even screaming along on the Trans Canada to Hope it seemed very fuel efficient, with half a tank left, so I took off for Princeton, planning to fill up there. About half way through Manning Park the tank was down to one bar (bubble?) on the gauge and the station up there was closed. I started to sweat! How much range is left at that point? 50 km? I didn’t know and consulting the owner’s manual seemed useless, I know there isn’t any diesel in there. I’m thinking “what procedure is required for bleeding the injectors?” So I crept along at 75 in manual gear mode and made it to Princeton okay. Filled up and it took only 16.33 litres! If the capacity is 22 then I had 1/4 tank or so. Not too hyped about that gauge!
Has anyone here run right out? Does the engine shut down before the injectors are spraying air? I didn’t want to find out in the middle of Manning Park in the dark!

Hi everyone I recently bought a 2008 smart car for 2 1.0l guy I bought it from claims he had gotten it for parts because of over heating problems but he was moving so he had to get rid of it car has 124k miles so when I got it home I test it it and it turned on and everything good idle normal so I discarded blown gasket charge the temperature sensor and the thermostat being that I didn't get hot air from the hvac after car worked good during the day of the repair toward the evening I got the temp lights when driving back home I immediately turned the car off and waited to cool down then I got home. I when I started to look for the problem I noticed that the rad fan didn't come on at all so I tested the relay and it was good so I took the front end of to get to the rad fan put 12 volt to it and it worked so back to testing came to find out that fues 28 was missing so I installed one and the fan come on briefly with engine on and a/c on and then turned off right away. checked the fuse and relay and it's good. One thing I noticed is that the a/c compressor kicks in and out with in seconds. I checked the pressure on the low end and it's 65 psi with a/c off. When the a/c it's on and the compressor kick in it goes to 52 psi but it's only for like 10 to 15 second and it kicks out and psi go back to 78 psi on a 90°f weather. I left the car on idle for good 25 to 35 minutes and it didn't over heat I ordered a scan Guage to keep track of the temperature but fan still doesn't come on with a/c nor with the temperature sensor which read 226°f. I also checked the ac temperature sensor under the passenger side.

Hi; I am new here. I have a Canadian model 06 Smart Fortwo Pulse CDI(Diesel). Bought it for the good fuel mileage. Has 6 gears. Auto shift and manual shift paddles on steering wheel. Driving it for about 8 months. Started with 110,000 kms on it and have put on 10,000 kms. Drives up hills on the highway with ease. Getting around 4x better fuel mileage than previous Dodge Caravan I was driving. Have a couple issues with this car. Searching previous Topics for answers. Likely starting a new topic because so far not finding answer for one particular issue. Can't be driven until I resolve it.

Hello everyone, or anyone? ...who might know how to find a replacement glass panel for the power moon roof that came standard on all the special edition 2006 fortwo grandstyle coupes? Mine is #189 of 200 in the registry and I live in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dane from Evilution UK said I wouldn't find one even if I were in Europe. He said "they are rare as Pegasus $hit" on his "how to" mod page on changing a fixed roof to an electric sliding glass one. https://www.evilution.co.uk/mod/450-glass-sliding-roof.htm?highlight=Electric sliding sunroof Any and all leads, part number(s), etc., will be greatly appreciated! I've owned and loved it for 10+ years, but a supposed tree branch did not. Thank you.

Well I just thought I would put in my 2 cents with the short version of our story. Fell in love with the smart during a visit to France in 2001. In 2002 we forced our deposit money at our local MB dealership. They didn't want to take it as they did not know if the smart would ever come to Canada. But finally we won out and they took our money.

After waiting over 2 years, we were the first non-corporate/demo people to take delivery of a smart in Edmonton (and possibly in Alberta) in October 2004. We have a Stream Green pulse cabrio with all the options and trimmings. What more can you say other than we love it and it fits our lives perfectly.

previous owner said it ran until he changed the battery, then crank but no start. He lived in the north west territories, no where near a Mercedes dealer so he pulled the battery and parked it. It has sat for 15 years. I like to tinker, so it was gifted to me to see if I can make it run.

I forgot to introduce myself, been creeping here after I bought a 05 smart Fortwo CDI back in Dec as a cheap alternative to my truck while my electric car was being repaired, always wanted a smart car and found a deal of a car with only 73k kms l couldn't say no to. Now I'm just playing with things to make it perform a lil nicer.

Smart cars were very tempting for me since almost their beginning. Almost 4 years ago my dream came true. I bought a 2003 cabrio 700 ccm.

As it's not the most popular car on the market on both sides of the ocean and workshops are not familiar with them, owners' forums are a great help. I've been reading the NA forum since a long time, but finally decided it's about time to register and say hello

My smart has been produced for the German market in 2003 and been there until late 2018 when I bought it and brought back home Since then it's travelling mostly in the southern part of Poland, Europe It was supposed to be a car to drive to work, but quickly started to be the most popular mean of transportation in my hands I've been using it since for everything, including going on holiday in the mountains with my girlfriend and our bikes and other things, too

Smart cars are getting more and more popular in Poland. We're having a Polish forum, too. And we're the only region in our country to have regular monthly spots since the beginning of 2020 We've started it in two smarts, on the last spot there were 10 of them We hope that our community will grow

	HI all,

	Thanks for letting me join.

I have a 2006 Fortwo that has an odd issue. Reading through older questions I assume I have a duff brake switch but would like to confirm.

My Right (its LHD) rear brake light stopped working.

I opened to check the bulb and found the terminal strip had got hot and receded into the plastic breaking continuity to the bulb. I removed the plastic and the bulb worked again - so far so good.

On testing both brake lights work but the top rear windscreen strip does not light.

When I press the brakes the dashboard backlight dims completely (current draw?)

When I put the headlights on, the brake lights come on (not touching the pedal).

Do you think the switch is defective? Nobody has touched any of the wiring etc.

	Thanks

	Matt

New smart car owner 450 2006 CDI.
First thing I did was put an air horn on it. Only got one key with it so bought me a DS150E and programmed in a second key. Now I’m looking for a set of steel rims for winter tires. Hoping to drive it through most of the winter but that’s me and my car so thanks.

Greetings from Ottawa and farther points of Eastern Ontario. I just bought my retired mechanic's silver on red 2005 cdi passion cabriolet with 124K. I took a chance in buying it since it was parked with a crank/no start (fuel) for well over a year in his side yard. Towed it to my house and spend over 24 hrs wrenching on the fuel system before it detonated. Biggest time sucker was breaking\stripping 3 of the 4 torx bolts of the torsional cross bracing and drilling them out......but that is why alcohol was invented. Once safetied, I drove around the neighbourhood for 200km then headed out for a real test drive by going to Georgian Bay and back over the extra long labour day weekend (1000km). 60 mpg on the way and 69 on the way back (old school). Smart-E-Pants is growing on me. Only one Dodge 4x4 pickup truck owner questioned my masculinity so far. This is my 3rd vehicle forum that I have joined, I was a regular contributor on OdyClub (Honda Odyssey) for 6 winters while driving from Ottawa to the Southern tip of South America (Ushuaia, Arg.) and almost back (Colombia).

I hope to share your insight and experience while participating on this forum

	Adios,

	Hi All.

	My first post!

I bought a 2003 Bluewave Roadster from a local garage who was retiring and it was just sat in the car park, flat tires, dead battery, non runner and covered in leaves.

Engine light on and 3lines on the speedo…..I hear you cry why! …..It was cheaper than my cars service bill and cute so I bought it.

new brake light bulb fixed the 3lines….but my luck ran out there. (Thanks to evilution for all the info so far)

A new battery wouldn’t hold charge overnight. I did an amp test and it was pulling 2.8amps and that didn’t change after completely removing the Sam and Ecu.

so what’s still live after Sam is removed and any tips on where to look first? Otherwise I entering into the biggest puzzle.

This must have happened to someone else….alternator is my next check.

	thanks all.

	Aaron.

Hi everyone, my wife and I just bought a 2006 Smart CDI Grandstyle.

We live near Cornwall, Ontario. Back in 2006 we leased a 2006 CDI Passion from Smart Mississauga near Toronto when we lived n that area. There was a crazy amount of enthusiasm about Smart in Canada at that time. We were part of a Smart cruise to Niagara with around 130 other CDIs.

We bought this little guy as a second car and to tour around for fun. It needs some work but we're looking forward to getting it all fixed up and touring around the area
