  1. My 06 cdi completely overheated just after I stopped to fill up at Napanee Sunday evening. Spiked right up to a full set of blobs, flashing thermo-symbol and beeping. Got towed home to Brockville. I haven't looked yet, but suspect a seized thermostat, burst/disconnected hose or water leak. But I saw no sign of dripping or smell of coolant. Any ideas? Tedder in Brockville
  2. Hello all, I have been trying to find the easiest method of getting to the rear side of the engine on my .8 dsl fortwo. I have 3 key components I want to always have access to. my starter alternator and thermostat. I have done some research on locations and plan to create a hatch door to give me immediate access to them most likely with hinge style or grove style (such as the engine cover panel) my question is has anyone ever attempted this mod to the body of the vehicle? also if I were to cut away a portion of the cell shown in my picture(general area) is there any ideas of ways I can have it easily removable and still create an airtight seal for sound when reinstalled? I have access to welder and can form sheet metal. tomorrow I am going to begin the cut. also the second picture is showing key strength points in red and I will be cutting just under the main support in between existing engine access hole and my cutting area. I am planning on swapping alternators in summer as bearing in mine is on its way out the door. I am also wanting to attempt tolson's restrictor mod to gain some heat in my -32 celcius world I live in. thank in advance!
  3. interestingly enough I had my cdi overheat on me in a very short time on a cold -29 day in Winnipeg, however has now happened for a third time. Cold started the engine not plugged in barely started. pheeww i idled the engine for 1 minute then proceeded to work and noticed i received my first bubble of heat rather quick only after 2 kms or maybe 3 minutes total engine run time. then received my 2nd bubble after another 2 kms.and only a minute later or 1 km i got my third bubble that i never saw once in winter especially one of our coldest days i knew there was something wrong aswell noticed no output from heater matrix as my windows refused to defrost with cold air. i then got my fourth bubble and knew i was overheating. so i pulled over and let it cool down. Now here is my question. if the cooling system is always circulating coolant though heater matrix regardless of the thermostat being open or closed. then why did i overheat with no output from heater? is my Canadian model smart cooling system run differently than what others have described on club smart ? on a day -26 and warmer i have never had this issue occur on a warmer day. and i will start to receive reasonable heat usually just before my second bubble shows on the cluster. my only possible explanations are my heater matrix flow is controlled by thermostat and i am having occasional issue with thermostat sticking closed. and my water pump has to be still in good condition if on slightly warmer days (-24) i get heat as normal. and i hear no belts squeal. so coolant flow through system should be sufficient. i am stumped. any other suggestions? or explanations?
  4. Hi there,Is there such a thing as a winter thermostat for the 0.8 Cdi engine? I enquired about this at the local Smart centre in Aberdeen, UK. The parts manager could not find anything on his system but confirmed he did not have acccess to parts for Scandinavia and Canada.I had replaced the thermostat myself on 19 Feb 09. It started failing about three weeks ago. Impossible to get engine temperature above 62 degrees C. I have even blanked off 70% of the front surface of the radiator and engine is still running cold. Visited local Smart centre in Aberdeen and enquired about getting the thermostat replaced under warranty. I was pleasantly surprised when they advised it is guaranteed for 3 years and they will fit a new thermostat free of charge. I had paid nil for the one fitted in February and now I get a new one fitted for free - that is what I call excellent service! There is a change in the part number for the thermostat fitted to the 0.8 Cdi engine. Part number for the thermostat fitted in Feb 09 is SA6602000315. Part number for new thermostat yet to be fitted is Q0004698V003000000. I suspect there must have been a problem with the existing one since part number has been changed. Can someone advise part number of thermostat fitted to the Canadian Cdi 450 model?Cheers,TK
  5. Hey everybody! So my thermostat is stuck open. I have a piece of waterproof cardboard over the rad, which lets it reach temperature, but only about 81 degrees (never went above 69 over the winter). Mercedes quoted me $400 for it, and RCTS is willing to match that. Is there anybody, anywhere in Alberta, or BC really that could help me do it by myself? I'm willing to drive and pay you for your time and effort. Thanks again!-Troy
  6. My car has had a dramatic reduction in fuel economy from about 73 mp (average in June, July and August) to about 66 mpg (September and October) , which I can attribute only to cooler fall temperatures. The car also has been slow to heat up (yes, I know diesels are slower) but I am often into 15 minutes or more on my way to work now at 100 km/h before I hit 3 circles on the heat gauge; previously in summer it was about 5 minutes. The outside temperature, for example, this morning was only 5C - hardly winter like - compared to 15 C typical of summer at about 5 am. Going down hills at 100 km/h the temp drops to two circles and then is slow to go back to three. At this rate there will be no heat in real winter. I am thinking that it's the thermostat. Is this a big job to fix? MB in Halifax wanted to do diagnostics on the car and would not order me the part without paying for it first unless I did the diagnostics. Surely a thermostat is not a big job. They say they have never replaced one but since the oldest car is only 8 years old that may not mean much. I guess they worry that if they found that a $2.00 nut was missing and fixed that they would be "stuck" with the thermostat with no prospective customer for a $100 part. Keep in mind that I have dropped >$5K at this dealership since I bought the car in Feb (turbo, intercooler, rear brakes, 7 regular services, etc) and found this stance to be a bit odd.Any ideas?
