smartzuuk Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Being that we haven't had an official fuel derby in awhile, I thought perhaps some of the Scangauge users would like a place to report their daily trips... maybe help inspire some to get better fuel economy numbers than normal.Of course, tips and tricks are welcome, but please, you need to report a Scangauge trip when posting in this thread. There is already a thread for general fuel economy discussions... so please go there for non-Scangauge trip reporting type posts.I've sorta also thought this should be for your (normal) daily commute. So, I won't be posting super low numbers from when I am in Saskatchewan etc... Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 3, 2007 Author Posted July 3, 2007 July 3rd - From home to work, about 40 kms totalScangauge: 2.8 L/100kmThought I would start off with as low a number as I could get. I'm running normal tire pressure in 175/195 tires just FYI. Max speed 81 kmh, max RPM was 2750. Average speed was 55 kmh (the commute is not all highway!). Coasted in N a few times, and turned off the engine at one light. Made if off of Hwy 1 with a 2.9, and was able to pull it down to 2.8 after cruising carefully through Langley along Glover and the Bypass and then over the Hwy 10 hill into Cloverdale... I think I could get this number a bit lower with higher PSI and narrower tires... Temperature today was 20c and dry Quote
MikeT Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 July 3: 3.5 into work (in reality this is about 3.35 L/100), driving at just over 90 km/h. I got nailed by four stoplights on the highway. Quote
reglys Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Mike T and SmartzuukYou are professionals! My scangauge reported today(July 3) 3.3L/100 Km from home to a customer using highway and secondary road (about 34 Km with some stops and an average of 62 Km/h - 95 Km/h max). Most of the time, my run for work is a 12 Km drive with a lot of stops and traffic light. The best I have achived so far is a 4.2 L/100Km. Before using Scangauge, I was averaging 4.5L/100 Km. Well I am still trying to improve it.The scangauge is an amazing device to report the gas consumption in real time. I am very happy with this device so far. In setup, I set the speed to 3%. Didn't do any adjustment on the first fillup and set the second fillup to 3.4%Any tricks guies to improve the gas mileage in traffic. Is it better to shift fast and maintain a steady speed or to shift slowly. Thanks Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 I got a 2.9 on the return trip tonight... I find that driving slowly, and shifting at even 22-2300 in the city is okay, with taking the foot off the accelerator when shifting just a bit to help ease into the next gear. As with all of the cars it would seem, I think you will find they respond to lower RPM better once they are well broken in. Mine has 110,000 kms and really, I'd say it is getting the best fuel economy of it's life.I was using my Scangauge I this morning, and have now reverted to using a Scangauge II. I don't think the program is any different. I adjust 3% for speed, and 5% for fillup, but I need to verify the GPS speed tomorrow with current tires and psi just be sure (They aren't stock size).I've some updating to do on spritmonitor - a handful of tanks up to 105000 km, and then a couple recent fills. remember that my car was on loan for about 5,000 kms recently (4 months). I sure am glad to have it back. Quote
MikeT Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I got 3.6 on the way home last night, top down at 90 km/h. Beautiful night for a topless drive. Quote
Dang Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I got 3.6 on the way home last night, top down at 90 km/h. Beautiful night for a topless drive.Jeez.....the imagery.....I think you were lucky to get a 3.6 for being topless. I would have given you a 0.0....Dang Quote
MikeT Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Geez I thought I was kinda hot in a middle-aged way ;)Today the ScanGauge probably gave well over 4, because Jennfer was driving..... Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 5, 2007 Author Posted July 5, 2007 Another 2.9 on the way home tonight, and I think 3.0 for the day, maybe 3.1I was kinda hot today if I do say so myself30c Quote
MikeT Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Correction, I checked the SG when filling just before midnight and Jennifer "scored" a 4.8 today, which brought the ScanGauge average for the tank up to 4.0. Actual consumption was 3.89, 0.01 above my average (d'oh!). Quote
Duck Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 4.2 L/100 km, at 100 km/h on 401 for 60 km, with a tail wind.-Iain Quote
reglys Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Got 3.9L/100 on my way back (12 Km) to home yesterday and today. Thanks Smartzuuk for your advices. I think the slow shift helps. Anticipating the traffic lights helps a lot also. I can't imagine I changed my gas consumption from 4.5L/100 to 3.9L/100 in about one week with the SG and the advices on the forum. The next step is to be consistent in the results. Quote
Duck Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 3.8 L/100 km this morning on the BordComputer, 10 km @ 80 km/h, 10 km @ 90 km/h, 40 km @ 100 km/h. Tailwind!-Iain Quote
MikeT Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I averaged 3.8 Thursday, top down, wide tires, 90+ km/h, over the Malahat twice, plus urban driving in Victoria. Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 6, 2007 Author Posted July 6, 2007 I got a 3.8 today with my bike rack and bike on the car... time to investigate vortex generators... to see if they will help reduce the drag the bike and rack create.I got various 3.5 trips yeterday, but the speeds were included long sections at 60 kmh in 5th versus strictly 80 kmh in 6th. So you can see the exponential effect of drag kicks in much sooner....Respectable numbers of course, but not great. ;-) Quote
Duck Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I'm lucky; on my back-road route home, if I have an hour to kill, I have one stretch of about 15 km at 60 km/h with no stops. That always pulls me down well below 3!If I do a mileage run to aim for 2.1 this summer, that's the stretch I'd hit it on. There's a hill at either end, too - both aiming "down" toward the middle, so it's perfect for that kind of thing.-Iain Quote
Duck Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 3.7 L/100 km this morning (15 km @ 80 km/h, 45 km @ 100 km/h). Yeahhh!!! Lookin' GOOD! Fellin' HAWT! -Iain Quote
Dennis Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Correction, I checked the SG when filling just before midnight and Jennifer "scored" a 4.8 today, which brought the ScanGauge average for the tank up to 4.0. Actual consumption was 3.89, 0.01 above my average (d'oh!).Does this mean that anyone in the high 4s drives like a girl? Quote
MikeT Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 If "drives like a girl" means balls-out, then yes ;)I scored a 0.0 today. I rode the bicycle. Quote
Duck Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Imagine 0.00000294 L evaporated while it was sitting there, and it didn't move at all... you'd have like, infinite consumption :PShould we factor in the Earth's rotation? -Iain Quote
MikeT Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 3.3 L/100 on the way in to work this AM, top down with roof bars in place. I am impressed, as this is in reality probably under 3.2, and I am on the wide boy tires, at normal tire pressure. Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 11, 2007 Author Posted July 11, 2007 I did a 2.8 this morning with wider tires, 31 PSI coldlast fill was a 3.6, I anticipate a 3.3 to 3.5 on this oneI do have some shorter trips that yield 4.0I should have two spare scangauges available when I come to the island on the 28th, just FYI, if anyone wants to join in on the fun, and save fuel Quote
MikeT Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 3.6 on the way home, headwind and top all the way down. Couple of stoplights....I am best pleased.Keith, you should consolidate all of your spritmonitor records! It would improve your overall L/100 overnight... Quote
smartzuuk Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 I have considered it... but at the time, comments would be lost...I could just display my 3.6.. but I think I would be close to 3.8 all combined (3.835)... I can get there. Quote
reglys Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Got 3.7/100 this morning on the way in to work The traffic lights were good for me. Amazing I can get that kind of gas consumption in city traffic.but got 4.5/100 on the way back to home at the end of the day It was raining and got a lot of red lights. Quote
