inno Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Is there a contest on for fattest Smart owner to replace the headlight bulb themselves? I managed today in 20 minutes, at 231 pounds. No lubrication used on forearm. The trick is to remember the orientation of the cover and bulb when they come off, so you can put them back on in the same position. Quote
Duck Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I can do it in under 2 minutes. But I've had some practice - I've replaced upward of 20 bulbs for myself and others. :)I like the idea of a contest like this for our next smart meet!-Iain Quote
Francesco Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 That should generate much more awareness and publicity for the smart than some stupid rally! Quote
B Tisshaw Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hey InnoWhat the heck do you mean by lube on the forearm? Popeye sized pipes? and that begs the question, what is the smart forearm lube of choice...KY, something non corroding to wires? or bearing grease, just cause its an automotiveapplication.I think I will draft my kid to do this, when and if needed, he has much skinnier arms. Be forewarned, there will be blood tests for the winner! Quote
B Tisshaw Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hummm...seems as soon as two or more boyz do the same thing at the same time... trying to do it quicker...ITS A FRIGGIN CONTEST! Game on. But, no urine tests, lets keep Dick Pound outta this. The tests would only reveal higher than normal levels of hops n barley, hardly performance enhancers. Quote
Diesel Dave Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 If inno does the headlight on one side while Duck does the other, I'll charge the A/C while doing a panel change as Mike T changes the oil. With practice, we should be able to do this during a push event as long as we have some loud rap music in the background. Quote

ORLOV Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Well you guys, I gotta hand it to you, you are all genius's !! Replaceing the bulb in anything less than a complete day and till noon the next ........ Yes that is what it took us. Where were you Duck when we needed you and your 20 min. feat?// What a mess. Pieces of the nose and sides of the front of Cutie lying all over my hubby's shop, and the darned bulb STILL in place yet. We pulled and tugged and phoned poor Bil Gladstone repeatedly till he must have been getting pretty fed up. But he was such a help, made us feel it "was" possible. somehow. maybe. Anyways , the bulb is in and seems to work. If you ever have a contest to see who takes the longest we will win hands down. If another bulb gives up the ghost , I will definitely take it to Kelowna, whether I have time or not. Right now we are so busy getting ready to go south for the winter, I really didnt have time to make the trip. But I wish I had. My hubby says if there is a next time, he thinks we could cut the time down to maybe an hour or so, but I wouldnt count on it. Anyways, I have great admiration for all you fellows who have accomplished this feat in such a short time and obviously with no problems or special appendages. Bravo. Quote
smart142 Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 One of the tech's from London told me his method. Loosen the panel on the affected side. Pictures can be found here.. Shows you how to take off the black triangle and the 5 T25 screws. Pull the panel towards you and you can now see the back of headlight bulb. I've done it through the grill ,but a couple of times the electrical connecter is too tight, and you're pulling at an angle. Loosening the side panel lets you access it directly and it takes less than 10 minutes to change Quote
Duck Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 But why bother when it takes < 2 minutes through the grill? :PLoosening only one side of the nose cone makes me nervous; it does flex a fair bit, but there is a limit.-Iain Quote
burnman Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I've tried going through the grill but just can't do it. So, I take the front panel off and replace both headlights at the same time. While I'm there, I blow out or change the dust filter, and check the fluids (which are much more accessible with the front off). I'm so good at taking the front off, I'm usually done within the hour.
