Where Did My Avatar (picture) Go?

Well, the switch over went smoother than I probably expected, but not as smooth as I had hoped. One victim - our avatars.

They were lost... well, sort of.

Without getting too technical, they didn't convert "properly" and there was no feasible way to manually fix them. So you're going to have to re-upload your avatar using the My Controls link at the top. Now, why I said "sort of" is that they are all found here (warning - not suitable for slow Internet connection)... just go through the lot of them and find the one you were using. Or feel free to upload a brand new one of course!

Don't forget the spritmonitor plugin BTW...

Start a new Site Feedback topic if you want to discuss this further (I'm going to try harder than ever to keep things on topic now!), but in short: I don't know how its done, and there's no ready-made IPB modification for spritmonitor. If someone can figure it out, or ask spritmonitor to create one for IPB, then fine - otherwise... its a casualty of war. - Steven

s mack - okay once I'm at My Controls what do I have to do, or the sequence of, getting back my old a avatar? The next steps are what are causing me confusement.

Step-by-step:

[*]Visit this page if you want your old avatar. Right click the one that's yours and Save Picture to your desktop (or somewhere that you'll find it. Skip this step if you have another avatar you want to use.

[*]Click the My Controls link near the top right of the page

[*]On the left, under Personal Profile, click Edit Avatar Settings

[*]Click the Browse button and locate the file you saved.

[*]Click Update Avatar and you're done!

i tried to upload the same photo i used last time but it says it's too large. i resized it to barely visible and it still wont take....suggestions?

Thank you s mack. Yesterday when I looked in the mirror and failed to see myself I knew something was terribly wrong. The sun was beginning to rise and I panicked. Fortunately my distress call to Csc was most excellently answered and now I have my image back!

You're probably confusing "file" size (the 35k limit) with "pixel" size (aka screen size) (the 125 x 125 limit). I am guessing it is the file size that is the problem and yes, a very tiny (screen size) but poorly formatted image can still take up a lot of space (file size). Which image is it you're looking at and I'll fix it for you. To answer that question - find the image on the other page, right click it and choose Properties. Then copy the address field and paste it here.

when i picked my new avatar and up loaded it, it was automaticly resized to the 125x125 format. that should save everyone one step of having to resize and save their avatar on their computer then up load.

Yes, and no.... good for the lazy or uninitiated but its not going to do as good of a job resizing (quality wise) as you can yourself - Steven

Does the avatar actually have to be 125 x 125? Mine was 125 x 94, but it still says "File too large". I resized it to 124 x 93 - same thing. I uploaded it from my own file on my hard drive rather than picking out my old one from archive, butI can't see where that would make a difference.Thots?

That probably means the actual file size (ie. it is over 35KB). If you want you can probably attach it here and I or someone else will get it resized for you.

Yes, the problem is the file size as Awesys mentioned.Pictures have two sizes to worry about. "File size" or "Disk size" is the amount of memory the file takes up on the hard drive, just like any other file on a computer (Word Document, Spreadsheet, etc) and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Screen size. "Screen size" or "Image size" or "Pixel size" represents the visual real estate the image takes up, and that is what the 125 x 125 is referring to.They are related (bigger screen size invariably means bigger file size) but not necessarily directly.Anyway, as Awesys says - just post it here and someone will "fix" it for you!Cheers. - Steven

Thanks for the offer to fix - I'd like to try it myself first just so I'm not such a noob. I've got to put that Adobe Photodeluxe to work somehow. Although when I look at the file size in WExplorer, it's only 5.9kb, so I can't see how the file size is the problem. That was the whole point of reducing the number of pixels anyway.

If your pixel size is < 125x125 (so yeah, 124 x 93 or whatever is fine) and your file size is only 5.9kb then you should be fine. I'll double check the server settings to make sure something else isn't going on here. - Steven

No, its not settings... I thought it might be something with the New vs. Regular members thing... but there's no group-specific setting for Avatars except to allow or disallow and they are both set to allow.So these are the requirements:Must be 35kb or lessThe width must be 125 pixels or lessThe height must be 125 pixels or lessThe file type must be: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNGIt sounds like you've got the first 3 covered, so maybe its the wrong file type? Uploading it here may help us help you... or if its not your image then it will help us figure out what's going on. - Steven

Hmmmm.... yes, it's a jpg. Very interesting, though. I just tried to upload it to this reply, but my browser merely stalled (using Firefox 1.0 right now after a Windoze reload, and I have a couple of issues with it). Switched to IE 6.0 and still can't upload my avatar to my settings, but I CAN upload it to this reply. At least, I hope you'll get it.Obviously it's something with the way my windoze is set up, not with the site admin. If you receive the jpeg, thanks for plugging it in for me.

Yup no problem.All you have to do is set the URL, put "URL avatar", and get the size correct, or you can stretch things out of proportion. You can set them way oversize too if you really wanted to cause havoc.
