Auto Logon

We might get a few less "guest" visits if members didn't always have to click on "log in" to be recognized. Is this an option on the new site, and if so, how can it be selected? The old site automatically recognized me after the first visit, presumably by the presence of a cookie on my machine(s).

Ya, I had the same problem... having to logon every visit. I fixed it by deleting the clubsmartcar cookies in Internet Explorer. After logging in the next time it remembers me now.

90% of all problems on all websites relating to "its not remembering me when I think it should" can be solved by clearing cookies! But yes, absolutely it will remember you normally.Cheers. - Steven

That link did not work for me. I had to manually delete the cookies from IE7.

I have to log in every time as well...have cleared cookies but am using Firefox. Anyone else having this problem using same?

The "delete cookies" link might not do it for you. Clear your cookies via your browser, as well as cache and temporary files... and it should work. I too was having the same issue on one computer (but not the other) and it worked perfectly for me.I can create a new salt (what a stupid name, but then - so is "cookie") but to manually do that for every account... yikes.Plus, as far as I can tell, I have to change the password to do it, which means communicating that to the user or forcing them to use the "forgot password" function - so I'd rather not do that. - Steven

Clearing the cookies, cache, everything has not fixed the problem fro me. I still have to log in. At least Firefox remembers by userid and password and I just have to hit enter.I even used McAfee quick clean which wipes out just about all temporary files.

Depends on your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options and then press Delete Cookies... (and Delete Files...)If you are using Firefox, Tools>Clear Private Data and then check off Cookies (and Cache) and press Clear Private Data Now.

Keith - nothing changed in the last two days. You said you check from many different computer in a pm... maybe that's got something to do with it. I'll look at the settings to see if there's anything, but I think its the cookies. I'm pretty sure of it. - Steven

few strange things....tried to log out today...couldn't. Had to clear cookies to log out. logging into another account here was fine and I could log out and logging back into this one was fine too...just strange I couldnt log out?Other thing is that Eddie cannot log in. he has tried his log in name and password and tried his login in using caps no caps etc. Tried to reset his password and has yet to receive an email allowing this. I asked Awesys about it but apparently the webmaster doesn't have admin here yet.S

Odd... Eddie has my email. And my phone number for that matter... wonder why he didn't contact me?Or... which Eddie? Ex3, right?Anyway... with your logout problem, probably a side-effect of me changing those settings to fix the other problems and left you having to clear your cookies. Now that you've done it, its probably fixed. I should probably set all cookies to expire after a minute... then change it back (7 days is default). That way it will force-clear everyone's cookies so when they log back in it should all be good. Not sure if I can do that but I'll look into it.Tell E3 to email me with the details... error messages or what not... and I'll look into it.Awesys has access if/when he wants it. He's in school and, as he and I discussed, he's not in a panic to get access. And since I have to manually set it up, well.. anything that can be put off for tomorrow is FREAKING GOOD NEWS FOR ME!!!! I just thought of one thing that may be affecting the cookies and logon issues.

The site's proper domain is www.clubsmartcar.com

We have it set up so going to www.clubsmartcar.ca will get you where you want to go, BUT technically they aren't the same thing. Almost, but not quite. They are synonymous in terms of resolving to the right place on the Internet, but once there... the forum is specifically tied to one domain or the other.

Here's an example... go to clubsmartcar.ca and then click on any link... you'll notice the domain changes to the .com

So what's that got to do with this? Well, since the official domain is .com - that is what the cookie is set to.

Let me break it down:

You come to the site via www.clubsmartcar.ca and you see a login, right?

You log in. Great. But now you're automatically and seamlessly transferred to the .com version, and the cookie is then set (remembering you)

Now... you shut the browser off and go away.

You come back, and type in www.clubsmartcar.ca again... and it asks you to login. Whaaa?? But I told it to remember me!?! Well, no you didn't - you told the .com to remember you... the .ca has no idea who you are.

Does that make any sense?

The easy thing for me to say is... just use the .com and not the .ca because there is no way to have the site save the cookie for both domains that I can think of.

Now... you might be asking, "but it wasn't like that before" and you're right. On the server before, the "main" domain was the .ca version and THAT is what the cookies were set to. So then, people coming in with a .com were probably experiencing the same odd login behavior.

For anyone that wants to start flag waving... a long time ago, the BOD decided that csc would be a-national... not Canadian, and not American. .ca domains are specifically Canadian, while .com has no national affiliation.

You are welcome to continue using the .ca domain - but yes, it may continue to ask you to log in.

There is one simple "fix" for you. Not really a fix, but rather just a change in use. When you come to clubsmartcar.ca and it asks you to login... don't. Instead, click the Forums link (which transfers you to the .com) and it should remember you from before.

This WILL not apply to all of you and the problems you were describing. It just happened to me (because I still type .ca out of habit) and I figured out that is what is happening in my case.
