Sure! These PO numbers correlate to the serial numbers shown above:

The numbers appear in the shipper's system with a "0" in front of the 8, representing "2008" model year. The "716" is the Penske code, so the meaningful number is the sequential five digit one at the end of that, such as "00478". As far as I can tell from the Canadian system, where dealers are assigned a PO number when they do a car order, that is a sequential ordering (not production) number.

The WME is the world manufacturer code for smartThe E is code for the 451The J is for the coupé, the K is for cabrioletThe 31 is for 52 kW (70 SAE Net HP) engineThe X is a code for safety equipment, but I am not sure what it is (maybe front+ side airbags with pretensioners in seatbelts)The next digit is the "checksum"The next digit is the model year (8 = 2008)The K is the assembly building at HambachThe last 6 digits are the serial number, which is sequential in a global sense, meaning European, Canadian and US smarts are all numbered on the same system. Mmm. I live about 25 minutes from the Port of Baltimore. I actually drove through the tunnels at the port on I-95 today, heading up the eastern seaboard (gotta love travel for work/pleasure/to get out of DC)... you could look over and see before you went down.My confirmation email needs to get here now, damnit.

First post here; lot of interest in this info but most of us in the lower 48 only have reservations for cars - no dealers open to even take orders at this point. Sooooo, have to assume somebody at Penske knows where these cars are going once they're offloaded. Hopefully they'll match up with the original reservation request for colors and options.

Have any US reservation holders been successful at finding out their VIN, or any more detailed delivery timeline?All I get is "Sometime in Q1", which is a pretty broad spectrum when you're trying to figure finances, logistics, etc.I'm fairly certain my reservation is pretty early in the list (placed it on March 19, literally the minute I got the e-mail). I'm hopeful I'll get my long-awaited cabrio in January, but if anyone has any tricks to nailing it down a bit more, I'd love to hear. And no, e-mailing my local dealer isn't helping, so far. :(Thanks!!!Pam

Pam,After reading Vol 11 Newsletter from smart, I have told myself to expect the new smart by Valentine's Day. Which is time enough to finish my nearby dealership and to get my smartie off the boat. I'll start to worry after that day and not a minute before because it's really wasted energy. Believe me when I say, it was easy to type that sentence -- now practicing it will be another thing. Also, remember that the dealerships have to also fill up their stores with parts, trained employees, smarts, accessories and the like. I figure now a realistic delivery is sometime after mid-February, if we're lucky. Sorry to rain on our parade but I think this train of thought is probably more realistic.Hang in there - Regina(I hope I'm wrong!)

Mike - Thanks so much for tracking the US cars. Please keep it up.Looks like 451 production has exceeded 100,000. Also seems to a higher percentage of cabs on this load.I'm really getting excited now.

My pleasure, and I do intend to keep it up.I'll tell you what helps, though...if you see a VIN on a car when a dealer opens, it'd be good to copy it down (I should only need the last 6 digits) so I can see if I've been getting all the shipments or not. In other words, if my tracking is perfect, we should never "spot" a car that isn't on my lists (in the spreadsheet to be exact). I'm not 100% confident on the US shipments yet, so these spot checks would help.On the Canadian 450 models over the past 3 years, I've got a VERY high level of confidence in my VIN list being comprehensive, because no spotted vehicles (we nearly have 20% spotted) have been in a shipment we don't know about, and the total sales figures for the 450 are about 30 shy of total imports (and there are some demos and service loaners that have never been sold to customers). I'd like to have the same accuracy for the USA, thoguh I realize we won't get anything like a 20% spotting rate there, due to the massive numbers alone. Even 1% would be a good form of quality control on my data. Eventually maybe our Webmaster, Awesys, will set up a US smart spotting database. We'll see.
