scooter_the_clown Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I'm trying to add a photo to my profile and not matter what I get the error message "The uploaded file you used is too big". I tried gifs and jpgs and I even tried a 20 pixel by 20 pixel jpg and still got the error msg. I browse to my file, then click save settings at the bottom (there is no upload button)Is this feature broken or am I doing something wrong?Scooter Quote
Awesys Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Personal Photos for Regular Members are limited to 256KB in size, and a resolution of 150x150. For New Members (which you are) they are disabled. I have now changed your membership to a Regular Member so you can try again. If it still doesn't work you can post the picture here and I'll try to get it up for you. (This picture will appear in your profile, and not under your username on your posts - for that you will want to look at Avatar Settings. ) Quote
SmartieParts Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Hmm... it would be nice if it were clearer with its errors. "too big" I suppose technically is correct if you're only allowed zero, but its still confusing.Ah well, at least it doesn't come up much. I'm tempted to set the New Member / Reg Member thing to auto upgrade after X posts rather than the manual system. It will let through more spammers, but we have next to no spammers now so maybe we can loosen it a bit? - Steven Quote
stellair Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I'm having the same issue with "photo too large" My photo is only 53KB. Please assist.Ken Quote
CountrySmartGirl Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 (edited) Hmm, how does one become a "regular member"? Do I have to post and "x" of no. of replies/posts? Is there are length of time one has to be a member at which this takes place? CSG Edited August 22, 2008 by CountrySmartGirl Quote
Kitty Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 (edited) You've been upgraded, but not answered so here goes: Hmm, how does one become a "regular member"? Do I have to post and "x" of no. of replies/posts? Is there are length of time one has to be a member at which this takes place? That's how it works at most places (either a post count or a timeframe or often both), but here you have to ask to be moved to the Regular Member group. I'm not sure why; perhaps they had trouble with unruly new members in the past? It's a system that I think would work more smoothly if it were more obvious that you needed to ask. ;)Anyway, the info is on the Rules and Guidelines page. Edited August 22, 2008 by Kitty Quote
FatCatAnna Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 I just tried putting a "face" to my name (a pic of my Smart) - but no luck. Have sent a PM to Awesys with the hope that they don't get annoyed with us bothering them <lol>.Cheers!!!Anna from Pierrefonds Quote
Speedie Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 We had issues with one hit wonders dumping spam - so now we have the grace period - bit bothersome but it certainly has helped keep the site easier to keep up.We are working on getting a general admin thing set up - we have a few folks delegated to be admins - helps ensure Awesys gets some sleep now and again. Expect to see that in a few weeks.Cheers,Cameron Quote
SmartieParts Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 The reason for asking is two fold.#1, it prevents auto spammers.#2, and more importantly in my opinion, it demonstrates that the user took the time to read the rules (which is where it tells you to ask) and to figure out the site enough to know who's the admin and how things work. Without that understanding, why should they be called regular members anyway? If they can't bother to take the time to find out who to ask, and to make a simple request, then I think leaving them as "new" members is appropriate. Being a new member is hardly a bother anyway as there are VERY few extra benefits afforded a "regular" member.Like many things, this was one of the new ideas I implemented when I was President. It was intended to be tried and evaluated, and determined if it should stay or go. The current administration has it in their ability to change this.In the admin panel, move all "new" members to the "regular" member group. Rename the "regular" members group to just "members" (or whatever). Delete the "new" members group. Change the default membership to "regular" members. - Steven Quote
Speedie Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Given the infrequency of requests - the current system seems to work - and if it ain't broke - and isn't bothering anyone - don't fix it.The method for dealing with the occasional singularities seems to be okay (Thank you admins!) so from that perspective it is probably not something that needs a lot of tweaking.Cheers,Cameron Quote
