Caribou Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Hi smarties,What do you do for seat covers? Most standard covers impede the side airbags, and that's no good. Any thoughts?-Sue Quote
denisjolicoeur Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Just don't use any and get your seats professionally shampooed once a year to keep the stains & dirt out and help prevent wear. Quote
biggreenbooga Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 You can get the material treated or scotch guarded. You can do the same for leather usually if you like.Seat covers also look poo. Quote
ianjay Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Greetings:I use cotton beach towels. They do slip down, but can be easily put back and are a breeze to wash.I'd like to be waxing my smart car right now, but my wife has it.Ian Quote
lebikerboy Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Actually, there were (are) some great looking covers made in Germany. I'll check availability... Quote
Caribou Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Ianjay, you're a star!Voila, custom seat covers (two beach towels and some safety pins), for under twenty bucks. Quote
Guest bcoop67 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Someone suggested the "little green machine" to clean the seats. I just bought one at Canadian Tire and find it works very well. This thread reminded me to scotchguard when finished! And I have a towel with a wolf on it for the dog's seat! Will have to find another towel that will look fun for my side! Quote
Caribou Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Now those look real classy...I'm all about the classy. Quote
yolanda Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I've got leather seats. I picked up a cheap seat cover for when the dog is riding in the passenger seat. It impedes both airbag and seatbelt but I don't care because the dog won't be using them anyway. I just slip it on when she's on the seat. If I give the car to a mechanic I'll slip it over the drivers seat when I turn over the keys and that'll keep them from greasing up the leather. Just because they're mercedes mechs doesn't mean I trust them. I might get a steering wheel cover for the same reason! If I'm dirty enough (after painting someone's house maybe) then I'll have to do something else, and your idea of a towel or similar fabric would doubtless serve the need. Thanks for a handy idea! Famous Erik Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 I bought some cheap seat covers at walmart(that nicely matched my red and black colours) and simply cut out a hole for the seatbelt assembly and side airbag. works perfectly. Quote
booneylander Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Surely the airbag would make real quick work of a cheapy seat cover. Theres so much energy there, I really don't think you'd need to worry about it. But then again, I suppose if the insurance company got wind, they could use any excuse to deny a claim. Quote

But then again, I suppose if the insurance company got wind, they could use any excuse to deny a claim. You're wrong there.Do NOT cover the airbag with anything. It has to be entirely free to inflate properly. This means not only ensuring there's a hole, but that the fabric NEAR the hole be tight enough to the seat body that it won't get in the way of the bag as it comes around to the front.Seat covers have contributed to deaths because of this. There are proper made-for-smart seat covers out there.
