Peugeot 404 Coupé And Cabriolet

Thanks to a contact in Spain, another 404 Cabriolet has been identified in Spain:

4495303, a white Cabriolet, originally Bleu Ciel, the body seems quite OK, but the engine is not functioning. It is for sale in Madrid right now for about 8800 Euros. Note the berline grille behind the 404 C grille frame!

Total: 1434 cars!

This morning I received two emails that told me about 4 new cars for the registry!

In Massachusetts USA, a Cabriolet that was bought in Burgundy in France way back in 1986 and exported to the USA: No. 6800940

In Switzerland, a white Coupé in excellent original condition: No. 4598393

And in Germany, two scrapped 404 C cars: Nos. 4670595 and 6801622

Total: 1438 404 C cars accounted for, of which 22 have been scrapped.

In Luxembourg, imported from Switzerland: a Cabriolet in Blanc Arosa 1132, ready for its date with a restoration. Chassis No. 4498709...

And then, right afterwards:

One of my German contacts gave me two more serial numbers of wrecked/scrapped 404 C cars.

Total: 1441 Coupés and Cabriolets, of which 24 have been scrapped. The confirmed survival rate is 8.3%.

After a hesitation of a few months, I have also added to the list two other 404 Cabriolets:

One is in South Africa, a model from 1967/68, with the incorrect serial number 5307052. Since the car is unique and identifiable, we will add it to the list. Meanwhile I am working with its owner to establish its true number.

The second one also has an incorrect serial number, and is located in a car museum in Salamanca, Spain. It is also from 67/68. Originally from France, it suffered a serious frontal collision around 1970, was re-registered in Spain and the number from a sedan was assigned to it for some reason: 5333341.

And, for sale on eBay in Belgium: 4595459, Cabriolet

Thanks to my contact in Spain, he has looked up the numbers related to a 404 Coupé that is for sale in Seville:

Serial number: 6801811, note the front turn signals of the Renault 5 Type 1, the R-16? hubcaps, the Renault (?) parking lights in the side of the front fenders/wings, the incorrect headlamp chrome rings.

Finally, I received an email from a fellow in Portugal whose cousin owns this pretty 404 Cabriolet from 1963: 4591088:

Another one for the "family album": I contacted Mr. Daugstad in Norway who has a black 404 Cabriolet (1965) Injection: Nr. 4596832:

Mike, I notice that both the red and the white one from South Africa have different roofs. Are those removable hardtops on a cabrio, or is it a particular year that had that roof?

Hardtop, yes, usually they are black but sometimes owners paint them body colour.

A contact in New Zealand sent me a large list of 404s in his country today, including the following C models that were not already on the list:

6801867 Cabriolet, licence plate PS 6276

4599456 Coupé, licence plate MR 404

Total: 1449. My target for the year 2010 was to reach 1450 404 Coupé and Cabriolet cars by December 31, so it looks as though I should get there!

This person also sent me 43 regular 404 VINs. So now I have 1004 of them too. Total no. of 404s therefore in the registry is 2453. Not too shabby.

Thanks to a new contact in Norway, he has given us two more 404 C cars for the worldwide census of remaining cars, both in Norway:

We lost one off the list because I had an incorrect duplicate entry from years ago, but the good news is:

I received 4 new serial numbers for the registry today.

The first two are in France:

4596582 - a white Cabriolet with Hard top that is undergoing a restoration right now:

4495588 - a Cabriolet in Sweden - photo to come

4591150 - a red Cabriolet in Sweden (originally Blanc Saratoga) with Nardi and Hard top, it needs a major restoration according to the owner (the headlights are strange!)

Another three cars can now been added:

1. 4596729, Cabriolet Injection, in-service date of 24 July 1965, Noir 1000 with Havane leather interior, located in Dijon, France (no photo).

2. The Dutch Cabriolet pictured below with the license plate DM-93-76 (white with Robergel wire wheels, the car is on the www.404cc.nl website) was bought in 2009 by a Peugeot collector in New Zealand and this car is now there and has the license plate 4O4 C. Its serial number is 4594228.

3. Another Coupé has been found in the Netherlands. This one was imported from France: 4499304, a red Coupé with carb. engine.

This brings the total to 1458 cars!

Got a new VIN in France today: 6802435, body number 15750, a dark blue metallic Cabriolet with fuel injection, registered May 20 1968. This car is in Avignon.

I can report some new information today:

A contact in Germany has passed on a couple of new numbers, from cars that he has scrapped for parts:

6801719, a white Cabriolet Injection from 19 October 1967

4596258, a white Coupé Injection from 01 August 1965

On the happy side, we have a report of a new 404 C in Germany that will probably be restored:

4595492, a Cabriolet Injection (colour unknown so far), from 03 May 1966, located at KEFFERHAUSEN

So this has brought the total to 1467 cars!

Well there is a story behind the next two I will list here. GT Spirit is a company in France, near Lyon, that sells VERY expensive cars, including 404 Cabriolets at about 30K Euro (as I said, VERY expensive cars).

About a year ago I asked them once or twice what the serial numbers of a couple of 404 C cars they were selling was, and they told me. Since then, they won't pass the info on, well probably because I would not buy one of their cars...

But they do post photos of them online, not with a good enough resolution to read the serial number, but sometimes clear enough to read the Carrosserie Peugeot number, which is almost as good as the serial number so far as the Registry is concerned. It seems to me that they should show the serial numbers in the advertisement and mention whether the chassis number (serial number) matches the chassis number on the engine, which could affect the value....but they don't.

However, two of the four cars for sale there right now have visible Carrosserie Peugeot numbers, so I have added them to the list:

This is Cabriolet No. 4499110, Carrosserie number 10682, a 1966 model with 1962-64 type front indicator/parking light units.

It is located in an underground parking garage in Brussels in Belgium and is never used by the owner. This same owner also has a black Cabriolet and a parts car which we unfortunately do not know the numbers of (nor are we ever likely to learn them, since he is quite reclusive according to my source). The black car has 17 km FROM NEW. That does not mean it's in good condition of course, but it gives you an idea of this owner's strange relationship with his cars.

Another scrapped car came to my attention today: 4595090, which used to be in Germany.

No. 1473 has been found in Belgium:

It is a C model, I am not certain which type yet - the person who told me about it did not specify - the car was first registered may 1966. Serial Number: 4499192.

4499723, a Blanc Arosa Cabriolet with XC6 engine from 1967, located in France.

Another one has been found (that's the good news), but it has been scrapped (that's the bad news):

4595367, a Cabriolet Injection of 1965 - the Fahrzeugschein is for sale on eBay. Before the car was scrapped, it had been converted to a carburator engine, the former location was in Austria.

4497445, Coupé with Carburator engine, first registered on 21 April 1964, colour: Noir 1000, car is for sale right now (January 2011), car is originally from France as you can see - the original license still on the car: 4929 M 93, located in Hungary.
