O.K., admittedly I'm a little overly zealous as I have had my new SmartCar for less than a month (after desperately wanting one for 5 long years). And now, "Bella" is here. She is so wonderful, a white cabriolet with red interior...spectacular. I've never had such fun driving, suddenly I don't mind the commute, don't mind being stuck in traffic - LOL.My question is thus...do I wave at other SmartCars driving by? I kind of do automatically, wave like a fool - but nobody has waved back yet (there have only been two). Should I sit on my hands and stop waving? As I said, I'm a little zealous, it will be hard....I have a fantastic picture of my 175 pound white Great Pyrenees in Bella, but unfortunately the file is too big to attach to this. I'll try to get somebody computer savvy to reduce it so I can post the picture, it's hilarious.

Haha, the cars that didn't wave are probably company cars. The drivers of those seem to like bigger cars for some reason.. :P I waved at another driver when I was on a test drive, and he waved back. No harm can come from it, and it puts a big smile on my face when I get a wave back. Keep it up I say!

I have the model 450 and I'm finding most no longer return the greeting. I don't even try with the 451 model as my wave is never returned. The 451 drivers I think, partly because Smarts are so common now, just treat them as a regular car, unaware of what it was like in the beginning and the excitement that came with spotting another early adopter.Man, do those 451 drivers really move!!

O.K., thanks guys, it's good to know that a lot of us at least have the "urge" to wave. I'll probably not be able to help myself, so to heck with them if they don't wave back! I love my baby!!!5 long years waiting for this car! And for 5 years my husand tried to talk me out of it. "Let's make it a Jetta diesel". "Why not a Mini". "You should test drive a such-and-such". And now, of course, he's constantly stealing my Smart!!! He adores it.

For me, it's just like what smartcruzin said. I used to wave at every smart I saw, but I basically never got waves back from 451's. So now, waves are only distributed for 450s. I sometimes do highbeams too, but only under ideal conditions (middle of the day, no one else behind the car coming the other way, etc.)

Hi Diamondlover and welcome to smart driving! I have a 451 and love waving at other smarties - it always make me happy. For the 450's that don't wave to 451's I hope they still do return waves. To be honest I don't recognize the difference from the front, I just see a smart and wave. :wavey: Enjoy the experience. I've had mine for about 9 months and she still makes me smile when I walk towards her.

:welcome:Welcome to the club... I still wave at everyone in a smart, some wave back some don't. Sometimes I'm a little late in waving as I'm concentrating on traffic and realize too late that another smart went by. It's really hard when I'm in our jetta and I see a smart, I want to wave but then I think it would be kinda silly if I did. Oh well.. enjoy your new smart, post some pictures when you get a chance. Where do you hale from? There are club get togethers all over.

Please waive, otherwise I'll look like an idiot when I wave at ya! :). I've had people nod, waive and even have a little chat at the traffic light, something like this:-Nice car-Right back at you, solid vehicle choiceIt makes for a better day, and why wouldn't someone waive back (company cars excluded, as most of them didn't choose a smart, they were voluntold to drive one)?

Oh I always wave back (So long as I see the original wave)

It makes for a better day, and why wouldn't someone waive back?

Some people just don't understand the fact that we are "special", in our own little way. Or more to the point, they are grumpy lame-o's :nana:

Yes, welcome Diamondlover!! Pleased to feel your same excitement I felt when my car arrived. I smile and do look at both models and drivers as they cruise on by. Like I said, the 450 drivers don't wave nearly as much any more either but I wouldn't miss an opportunity to return a wave or a smile to any of my Brothers & Sisters!Let's keep passing on the friendly torch forever!

I always wave at all smarts and love it if someone else beats me to it. I even find myself accidentally waving at smarts if I'm driving our Ranger, I forget so any lower mainland smarts being waved at by a black Ranger that was probably me!BARBPS: We've driven the Ford Ranger all the way to Jackson, WY where I am right now. (The mountain passes are too high for my 450 unfortunately) I've only seen one smart and that was in Washington! It's been 6 days so far!

Yahoo, thanks for the permission to wave! I will do so gleefully.I am in Toronto, living in the area of Kingston Road and Victoria Park, and working in the area of Finch and Dufferin. I am also in a Pipe Band, so if you ever see a little white Smart at any Highland Games (think Uxbridge, Orillia), that's me. :D I'd LOVE to go to a Smart get-together, so please do keep me posted if there's one coming up!

Hi, We have one of each, a 450 & a 451. We wave, flash our lights & smile at every smartie we see. No discrimination here. Having too much fun in either one!

i have no problems and i do wave at other smart cars. but when the other driver flashes there lights, rolls down the window waves, then pumps their first up and down, then honks, then jumps out at the stopped traffic light and runs around their car... i'm a little embarrassed. :P:P:P

:D I am a new owner as well and YES I think a "wee honk and a wave" is a good idea!! I had a motorcycle and the "nod" of recognition was appreciated!!

Sponge, thanks for that laugh. Whew, I don't do THAT (I just wave!). Did that actually happen to you? Toooooo funny!!And I must report, I have now been waved at twice, and had a chat with a lady in a parking lot we pulled into together with our smart cars. It's a nice little club we're in!!!
