Hi folks,On my way home yesterday, I noticed Digory's acceleration was sorta sluggish. No codes shown at first. It seemed to accelerate normally up to about 2500 rpm, but then it would flatten out. It did make it to its cruising speed of 110 kph, just sorta slow getting there. This morning, the CEL light was on from first start. SG2 said P0405, and it would not reset. It performed the same way on the way to work as it did last evening. The fault seems to be a hard fault. Is this code the same as the one that requires the cleaning or replacement of the EGR, or is it something else? Thanks in advance,

When I had similar performance issues on Bugger, it had code P0401, EGR insufficient flow. I removed, inspected, cleaned and reinstalled the EGR. It was really crudded up too.But this time, the code is P0405, as you said, EGR sensor A circuit low. Would it require the same fix, you think, or is there a sensor that I could check for proper resistance value, before digging into the EGR?Thx again!

Rats!I was afraid of that... At least I've done this (nasty) job once before, and if I can get the cobwebs off my head, and find my own post here, and Kane's, at evilution.co.uk; and the fq101.co.uk tips, I should be alright... I too figured if it were a sensor problem, vs an actual fault, it would not be consistently running so sluggish, and refusing to go over 3000 rpm. Thanks to all for all your help, including the PM's from Bil and Leonard. What a great club this is! :)I will post what I find after the job is done. Meanwhile, I am getting reaquainted with Kaiser, my '85 MB 300CDT. Man, it cruises so gooooood!Cheers,

I forgot...Does anyone have quick access to the part number for the fat hose on the top right side of the EGR valve, the one that tends to get chafed by the other line that goes over it? I might as well replace it while I have the valve out...Thanks,

Done fixed it! ;)Just completed the job of removing, cleaning and reinstalling the EGR valve. This was my second time doing this job, though the first time I did it on Bugger, my first smart cdi.Nasty job! The chunks of soot removed were ghastly. No wonder the OBD2 sqwaked code P0405! I am surprised codes P0401 and P0403 didnt come on as well...Anyway, once I had the assembly out, I separated the actuator/solenoid, from the valve body, and surprisingly, I was able to also remove the poppet valve subassembly from the body of the valve. I was tapping the body with a small ball peen hammer, to loosen the soot chunks, when I noticed the poppet valve moved out of its recess about 1/8". I was able to then pull it out by hand. An orange o-ring seal seems to be all that keeps it inplace, besides the soot, and the solenoid that fits on top of it. I was to grimy to take a picture. sorry. It is a cylinder about 3" long, with two springs, the poppet, and its casing. I could not take it apart any further, and cleaning the space between the rings of the springs was quite tedious, but doable. With all three pieces separated, i was able to give them a thorough cleaning with solvent (carb cleaner), various shapes of metal brushes, and scotch pads.I reinstalled using original hoses and hardware, as they all appeared to be still serviceable. So far so good...It all left me thinking about the intercooler. It may need a solvent bath too!Cheers,

Hey Glenn! It does feel good! :thumbsup_still: It still took me too long: My OCD switched to full-force, and I found myself cleaning and adjusting, and doodleing with every little clamp, hose, component, etc etc... Its not easy being me! :bigeyed: Cheers,

Hi,

I've got the exhaust to my EGR valve blanked off on the turbo side. There are three benefits:

1) No longer any need to clean the coke out.

2) Slightly better performance as volume of exhaust manifold between engine exhaust valves and turbine is reduced, i.e. turbo spins up faster.

3) Improved MPG.

My Smart is a 2002 Cabrio Cdi. It is possible that DTCs might be generated on the very latest models of the Cdi engine. Mine is OK as there is no mass air flow sensor.

Further details on OnSmart forum.

Cheers,

TK

Thanks for all the inputs, everyone! That mod, removing/blanking out the EGR valve is one of my next mods. I figure I have about a year to gather data and analyze it before it clogs up again...I visited the link you cited, Tolsen, and its very helpful. I am trying to determine if the exact pin designation and EGR operation applies to the 2006 cdi engine. Other members here have done a very similar mod on their 05 and 06 CDIs. I am corresponding with one such great fella here to help me decide what to do...Thanks again to all!Cheers,

Well, time to add one more to this thread: CEL, P0405 and limp mode this morning. Car started fine, no cel, but noticed it would not go over 3000rpm. Shut it off and waited for the reset click, restared, and cel and limp mode. Checked the code; P0405. Did the turn on-turn off about 4 times, and the cel went out, and the car ran fine the 45k to work. I guess I will have to do the EGR cleaning, but I would really like it to last until we get some warmer weather, as I do not have a garage.Anyone know how much Mercedes charges to replace one of these?MG

found in COST OF REPAIRS: Dec 23, 2009 ''Overseas Motors WindsorEGR Valve replaced - just under $600. Sorry, just looked at the receipt, it was just under $800!''

This is not helpful because you are in Edmonton, but Three Point Motors' general manager has told me that they will have an in-dealer EGR cleaning/reconditioning program with exchange units in stock. Therefore that job might cost $250 all in instead of $6-700. Maybe all dealers could consider this, if they have enough smart customers. Meanwhile the harness M-B sells for the EGR wiring might make it better for a few months....

Finally, after owning my Cabrio cdi, this has finally happened to Oreo (2006 Canadian cabrio.) Guess I'm finally a member of the gimpy EGR club. Yaayyy! lol
