MikeT Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) As of June 6th (arrival date of the Medea), there will be 3029 smart fortwos in Canada. 1347 of these arrived during calendar year 2004; the remaining 1682 have arrived this year. We're on track for a 4000+ smart calendar year! 1813 (63.2%) of the smarts in Canada are coup?s. 1216 (36.8%) of the smarts in Canada are cabriolets. I actually find the proportion of cabriolets to be higher than I might have expected, because the cabrio represents an 18% surcharge over the coup?. Having written that, the proportion of cabrios was as high as 45% earlier (smart Canada overestimated the cabrio penetration, evidently). I'll update this from time to time, in case anyone's interested. Edited December 13, 2007 by Mike T Quote
Fred J Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Mike - Do you know the date that the first boat load of smarts docked in Halifax? Not counting the "test the water" ones a few years ago. Quote
smartzuuk Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Interestingly, an all silver EU passion cabrio exists as a test car in Surrey - saw it there two nights ago. I actually think this is the car that I sat in at the 2004 autoshow; I'll have to check the pictures to verify the absence of the foglights. The one in Surrey of course has the front turn signals in the headlight cluster, and plastic covers (rather than foglights) where our turn signals are. Anyway, regarding the cars in Canada, 4000 is a good number, but still, I really think they could have sold 6000 if they had had the supply... I would be interested to see the qty docking in Canada by month. Then we can see the trend... Quote
MikeT Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 Mike - Do you know the date that the first boat load of smarts docked in Halifax? 6th of August 2004 was the date the first ship (Tancred) arrived in Halifax with CDN market smarts, Fred. Quote
MikeT Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 There is one EU market smart at M-B Boundary Road (saw it last Sunday; it's a cabrio - heh taillight swap opportunity for someone). Also on Clark Drive near Pender there is an EU smart parked in front of a business next to a sign (it's a little hard to see) Keith, I will do a monthly rundown when I get home this evening. Quote

Xandria Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 I love stats. Please, Mike, if you're inclined, I'd love to see further updates to this thread as the information comes available. Quote
ARTZ Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 1813 (63.2%) of the smarts in Canada are coup?s. 1216 (36.8%) of the smarts in Canada are cabriolets. Joe Koty, sales person from Tristar MB, in Saint John NB, said that they have sold alot more Cabrios than the Coupes. He would guess that it was 60% cabrio and 40% coupe. Now this was just off the top of his head. Quote
MikeT Posted June 20, 2005 Author Posted June 20, 2005 June 2005: 452 cars! ...the biggest smart shipment month ever! Quote
RoySkyBell Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 ...the biggest smart shipment month ever! Yes! And this doesn't take into account: Don Pasquale - sailed June 17, uncertain if there are any there Toledo - sails June 25, should be at least 90 (Do you count loaded-on-ship or docked-at-Halifax?) MikeT Posted June 20, 2005 Author Posted June 20, 2005 I use "discharged in Halifax" as the criterion. That way it's not incorrect to say there are "x" smarts landed in Canada as of the end of this month.... Shortly the PO numbers will be starting with an "06" for the 2006 M.Y. - something to watch for (and probably record in my VIN chart, so I can say "x" 2005 model fortwos were imported...) Yah, I noticed there weren't any 2006 on the Mignon, I'm thinking we should be switching soon. Do you know exactly when? Was it July or August that they switch over? I'm happy to be getting a 2005 - because I'll have one of the "first year" models... Quote

MikeT Posted July 18, 2005 Author Posted July 18, 2005 It would seem that the total production of all cars at Hambach since the CDN models first were produced back in July last year is around 76,650. This is based on serial number analysis, July to July (only 82 2006 m.y. cars are in our 3798 total, and who knows what part of July 2004 the first CDN smart was made). Anyway, with almost 3800 of those cars going to Canada, that means that our country, modest population and all, is taking fully 5% of all smart fortwo+roadster production. France, in comparison, took about 7500 of the fortwos last year (I have the exact figure at home), so per capita, we're ahead of them! Subtracting the roadster - also produced at Hambach with consecutive serial numbers - we must be taking close to 7% of all fortwo production, maybe even more! Then, looking at the cdi, well, nevermind, this is getting too speculative! Suffice it to say that we should all give ourselves a collective pat on the back for doing our part in keeping the smart dream alive! Quote
KAG Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Wow Mike you are full of UFI!! But really that is very interesting information.. Cool to see the numbers like that. Thanks for being so anal! Quote
RoySkyBell Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 ...Thanks for being so anal! Hmmm, was that supposed to be a compliment? Quote

spinner Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Does anyone know how many Mercedes-Benz Canada brand vehicles are sold this or last year? Based on a 50-year average, more smart fortwos will be sold this year. What I'm getting at is that the sale of smart brand vehicles in Canada is changing the relative workload on M-B Canada's and franchisees' dealerships. Possibly double the throughput. Quote
Gent Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Anyone know how many are in BC? I'm thinking maybe 1100?*trying to plan how many invitations to mail out for the September rally* Quote
MikeT Posted July 21, 2005 Author Posted July 21, 2005 They sell around 10K Benzes each year here, IIRC Quote
MikeT Posted August 8, 2005 Author Posted August 8, 2005 There will be 4062 smarts in Canada in a week's time! Quote
TFM Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Wow. So really. In one year Canada took over 4000 cars. Since the first car was delivered in Aug 04 wasn't it? The first of the 2005's? Quote
MikeT Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 The first delivery to a customer was smArtist on September 23rd 2004, so far as I know. The first ship bearing CDN market smarts arrived in Canada on August 6th, 2004. Quote
