SmartieParts Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 *DELETED* Self-censorship is just as much my right as freedom of speech - Steve Edit: Steve inadvertently removed the title of the thread. Threads need a title. I selected one as best as I could describe. Keith aka enthusiast42 ***** Response: I did? I just meant to remove my posts. - Steve
smartdawg Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 Steve, I feel your pain. All my t-shirt order correspondence from the spring meet went down the toilet too. Frustrating to say the least.

Peep Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 I hurt me big time, and I lost everyone's phone #'s too.
Xandria Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 I hurt me big time, and I lost everyone's phone #'s too. You can have my phone number any time, Peep. ;-) Seriously though... man, that just sucks. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to do a restore. That's like, so basic. I'll keep my mouth shut about other thoughts in my head though. This forum is backed up daily. Right now there's a restriction on storage allotment for PMs, so keep an eye on that and purge your junk. But I also think the storage allotment can be increased if need be too. You all have my deepest sympathies.
fortwo Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 They already deleted the thread that I started about lost pm's on the "other" site.
TFM Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 The other site went and deleted all PMs on the server without warning. I had several important ongoing discussions. There's the problem with the PM situation in general - no local backup - but they could have done it differently. So I ask a favor. PLEASE backup this site regularely (I'm sure you already are), and PLEASE give fair warning to the members before doing something like that. They're reason was that the "sent items" folders, collectively, got so large it corrupted the database so they needed to purge the whole thing. They can't restore them, because they would have to restore the entire site which would lose posts after the purge. I've now asked if I can pay them for their time to restore the entire site to a different machine or location on the server and allow me to pull out my pms. Grr.. - Steve Steve, I back up the sites databases every week. I know the server also makes backups and I belive they are still nightly. I will confirm this. I'm working on a script that will allow me to backup the databases automatcly to my local server here, but that will happen when I have some time. So it's 1 week at the latest at this point as I am doing it myself manually. Once I move this site to it's new home I will allow the site admins access to the database directly (We are still discussing all the finer points on this of course). I'm a privacy nut and will never allow anyone to read private mail/pm's. Just for the record. ADD: Also, as Xandria said, this board has limits so it should NEVER grow out of control and kill us all.
spinner Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 It was a minor inconvenience for me. I'm surprised something like that can happen, given all the spoken-of efforts to keep it stable. Like American Idol having a phone-in poll, then losing the results because of "human error". :dunno:Then again my expectations are influenced by the class of systems at work. I have over half a billion records in a database that I cannot corrupt, even with a hard power down.
Acier Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 I bet that they lost the PM when they try to ninja install a PM monitoring system or filter.

RoySkyBell Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Is THAT what happened! I was typing a PM when suddenly there was a time warp and my messages were all GONE!! I thought perhaps I was loosing my mind (which is also a possibility.)
TFM Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Lol - I doubt that Part of the reason they can't recover them (without recovering the entire DB) is because they are all encrypted. So I don't think they were trying to spy. Encrypted? Who told you that?
SmartieParts Posted June 3, 2005 Author Posted June 3, 2005 *DELETED* Self-censorship is just as much my right as freedom of speech - Steve
TFM Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Freitag It seems pointless... The passwords yes. One way encryption. But the messages... Since the private messages are shown in plain text it doesn't wash. Since the decyptor would have to be there as a routine. Then you could just use it to view the messages. If you have direct access to the db files. You have it all. It just makes no sense and would cause server overhead...
spinner Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Did anyone else get an unsolicited PM from UpsoluteToronto at around 11pm (Eastern) on May 31st (after the PM corruption was fixed), only to logon and find it missing? Perhaps, as a new corporate sponsor, they thought they had spamming privilege.
Guest Disappointed_Alex Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 It deeply disappointed me to see conversations like this (AND OTHERS) on your board, not only because of the mis-information, but also because of the members who should know better than to make such fact-less statements. Having read only a bit of this board I have come to the conclusion that it contains baseless accusations and innuendos, which should not be a part of any proper discussion board. I came over to check out and see if you guys were a real club and if we should allow a link exchange from our site. Instead I find this type of crazy talk which can in no way contribute to a symbiotic relationship. It saddens me to inform you that at this time we cannot refer anyone from our board to yours because this forum needs to concentrate more on cars and less on accusation not based in facts. We will continue to allow links to all legitimate smart sites on our forum but you can understand that this forum cannot be part of our approved list of links. Maybe one day if your club matures I can re-address this but for now I ask all the x-members of MBCanada.com who believe in this type of crazy talk to please stay off our board and keep the talk here. Anyone can open free dialogue via email to talk to me, but comments like this deeply saddens me. Sincerely Alex PS. Oh yes all your emoticons look nice and familiar, copied from the "other site" I see.
Acier Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 PS. Oh yes all your emoticons look nice and familiar, copied from the "other site" I see. http://www.phpbbhacks.com/smilies.php http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/catdb.php?cat=22 http://www.phpbbsmilies.com/ http://www.phpbb-design.com/smileys/ It goes on and on... Which "other site" are you talking about? And for the rest, can`t you see that some people are simply disapointed/frustrated on how Cooper handles things? Whatever...
Xandria Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 It deeply saddens me that once upon a time several people offered their boundless energies to create a complementary, non competitive WEB SITE (not forum) for smart car enthusiasts and real life clubs, only to be harshly treated, and the thread removed, not only because of mis-information, but also because of fear. Having read said board for a time, the conclusion was that any discussion of clubs, some get-togethers etc. was frowned upon and such threads removed from public view. Instead we find some crazy administration where a handful of people are dictating laws at whim, banning users and IPs without reason and not even complying with their own set policies. A little demotion for a user who calls Mercedes-Benz "swine" three times and outright banning of other members for no reason. It saddens me to inform you that I, for one, cannot believe that you came here to check out the status of our club for the hope of a link exchange when months ago you were completely against a smart car WEB SITE that boasted information about regional clubs. We will continue to strive towards the original plan and service the smart car community and its fans with a forum as long as they so desire. Maybe one day you will realize that the actions at the other place have deeply hurt a group of people who at one time would have followed those who they believed led a smart car organization with selfless joy and love, and due to being hurt, need an outlet to grieve over their loss. The wounds will eventually heal once the sense of disillusionment has passed, and then we can forge ahead with complete conviction in our passion for the smart car and our fellow smart car enthusiasts. Anyone can hear what you and your cohorts say, but actions speak louder than words -- or was that "speak loudly and carry a bigger stick", and actions to date have been filled with contradiction and intentions that did not have the best interests of smart car enthusiasts at heart. Sincerely, Xandria, the condemned but oh so happy and free here PS: Oh, don't tell me this was your first visit over here. Creating an account here just so you can "stem" further "mis-information"... please...
MikeT Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 You will find no misinformation here! Only people who were disappointed in the lack of freedom to post on club-related topics on MBCanada and also because of the unilateral changes to the forums made by the Webmaster. Let's not pretend that these problems don't exist; you will have to admit that the rules on posting about clubs were recently relaxed there, in an ambiguous way (one can mention events, but not recurit or solicit?!?). One imagines that the discussions that you and Tak were having with Cooper following the latest troubles were focused on communications, and the lack therof. Let's say I have it on good advice. So before playing the poor, dissapointed member here, let's read about exactly what the misinformation is, where it is, and let's have an open and public debate about it right here. That is something that could not occur at MBCanada.

TFM Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 It deeply disappointed me to see conversations like this (AND OTHERS) on your board, not only because of the mis-information, but also because of the members who should know better than to make such fact-less statements. Alex, I don't know you, so take this from a stranger. The only "Mis-information" here is your post. Your board bans people, without warning or reason, deletes posts you (the powers that be) don't like regardless of what they are or whether they are "allowed" by your rules. Some of the talk on this board is speculation, some is fact. I do not believe that anyone here has purposely posted anything in-accurate as the truth. This often happens when no facts are presented. If there are inaccuracies, please point them out. People can talk about whatever they want here. There is no fear of banning or censorship. As long as they post to the proper areas and don't break any of the basic rules of courtesy there is no problem. There's no fear of some high and mighty coming down on them on a whim. It saddens me to inform you that at this time we cannot refer anyone from our board to yours because this forum needs to concentrate more on cars and less on accusation not based in facts. We will continue to allow links to all legitimate smart sites on our forum but you can understand that this forum cannot be part of our approved list of links.I highly doubt that this site would EVER be on that list. Even if we were perfect obedient little smarties... So that's a moot threat.Maybe one day if your club matures I can re-address this but for now I ask all the x-members of MBCanada.com who believe in this type of crazy talk to please stay off our board and keep the talk here.Alex, Alex, Alex, if you flip this statement to your own board and change "crazy talk" to "totalitarian rule" then *MAYBE*, in future we will link to you. But until that day... PS. Oh yes all your emoticons look nice and familiar, copied from the "other site" I see. Yes, when I first signed on to your board I thought the same thing... I guess that's why they are in the public domain and FREE to all. Pathetic...
fortwo Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Somehow the point of what this is all about has been lost on some people. It's about people's passion and enthusiasm for automobiles. I met an MB guy named Lars last Sunday at the Vintage Race in Mission, and we watched a race or two, and cheered as a Porsche went from 5th to 2nd... and that's what it is all about... having fun. Will you be going to the ProMod race in Mission on June 11,12. We'll be there and it would be great to meet you. Ross
