CANMAN
Dom,I am confused. At the beginning of this post the engine was out of the subframe and there was a tooth missing from a gear. Now you are taking off the valve cover and chain cover with the engine in the car.Are you working on two different cars/engines?CANMAN
dieselkiki
Yeap! The previous picture are from a "for parts" engine I got. I open this one to see how the chain case are made and I found the missing tooht sprocket! I tought that the engine on my car had the same problem but... no! Now, I'll try to sell it as soon as I can but if I can't, I'll drive it as far as the engine blow. Both chain are ok, camshaft are great, the lifters dont leak, the cranksahft and rod dont have any endplay... so, what can I do now?? I'll drive it even if the chain noise are there. It's maybe normal. I have replace the alternator too. I tought that was the noise source but... not much! I'm tired to dont find. I think to myself "f*ck off". Enought is enought! Dont want to wasting more $$$ and time! I waste all my sunny weekend to work an this car!! I'm not realy happy. Have a great day!Dom
josblos
Salut mon ami kiki. Je vois que tu as encore des problème avec ta Smart. Ca ne te lache pas. Bon courage.
h20loo
If your car is going to be noisey then I would make a good noise. I would put a tag axle and a Detroit in there... just think of all the smiles you would get from the old truckers when they hear you coming!Sorry you wasted your weekend but I bet you will figure out what the problem is. Good luck!
dieselkiki
Salut mon ami kiki. Je vois que tu as encore des problème avec ta Smart. Ca ne te lache pas. Bon courage.Hey Joce! Ça va? Haha! T'as tout vu juste! Anyway... Anyhow... I hope the électric smart will be more reliable!
CANMAN
Dom,Since you have the parts to fix your spare engine, and already have the engine lowered why don't you swap the engines?CANMAN
MikeT
Ouch, 30 grand in repairs?!?That's outrageous! Elle est un Citron!
dieselkiki
Canman: The engine with the "thoots free" spocket is too worn to be just repair with my new sprocket and chain kit. The oil pump stoped to roatate due to missing thoots and the engine ran without oil pressure for too much time. Unfortunatly, the crankshaft are scrap and camshaft suport bushing too. But for the moment the engine on my smart (even noisy) run great. Of course, this morning I must replace a wheel bearing and take a look why the rear brakes stay apply but... it's become normal for me. It's a smart!! ;)MikeT: Yeap!! I went to more than 27000$ wasted in this car (including repairs under warranty). C'est "VRAIMENT" un citron!!! Probably a car built some monday morning or friday afternoon... I dont know. :/

MikeT
I wonder if using SVO killed it.
pinhead19
I wonder if using SVO killed it.HAHAHAHA!!!! Very funny.. Most mechanics think that way too.. I wonder what the good fellow Rudolf Diesel would say about that comment..
MikeT
Rudolf's engines didn't use 1650 bar electronic injection.
smart142
Dieselkiki's engine was OK. He became VERY FRUSTRATED when he worked on the smart: '' Nothing wrong on both chain!!! 5h on job for nothing!! I'm very angry to have waste my time for nothing!! Both chain are ok! All sprocket are ok! All guides and tentionner are in good condition... where is the problem?? Hello??? No body can help??'' Sounds to me that he sold a running smart that he thought sounded funny.
MikeT
Yeah that's what I mean, the bad noises or bad running could have been because of the fuel. Pure speculation, but it's possible. I wonder if the lucky new owner knows its history
cruise_carter
here is a nasty, noisy one
MikeT
Sounds like an exhaust manifold leak to me.
bilgladstone
Hard to say. When he holds the rag over the exhaust outlet at about 0:40, is there a puff of exhaust from somewhere in the manifold? So hard to tell.B
inno
I am having a similar noise problem. It appears to be coming from the right side of the engine, somewhat forward. I am attaching a short sound clip with the ticking noise. Any comments would be much appreciated. The oil light is not going on by the way. Are there any shops in Toronto that do this work cheaper than MB? I don't want to risk driving any significant distance. Smart Noise
bilgladstone
Ouch, inno! All these noises are a nuisance. Some mean no more than normal diesel engine aging. Yours.... chain tensioner loose maybe? I hope it's nothing serious!Bil
MikeT
I would recommend that you make the assumption the chain tensioner of either the cam drive or oil pump drive has failed and act accordingly - i.e. don't drive (glad you mentioned that) and have them replaced. Should cost about $1200 to have a dealer do it. No oil light yet is a VERY good sign!
fordnut71
i would say something is just rubbing. its not so much a tick as a rubbin on something.
bilgladstone
"i would say something is just rubbing. its not so much a tick as a rubbin on something."I thought perhaps chain "rubbing/slapping" against the inside of the chain cover... inno
Please keep the ideas coming! Much appreciated! Is there any mechanic in Toronto who would look at it, but not for MB prices?
Alex
Independent service options. If anyone knows of more please add them. The cam chain can be checked through the oil filler. Use a clean long screwdriver to check for slack on both sides, should be none. Don't put the screwdriver in with the engine on (doh!) but do use a length of hose to listen for the source. If it is a chain problem there would be a lot of noise coming from inside the oil filler hole. If it is an exhaust leak there won't be. The video does sound like it could be a simple external exhaust leak.
