R.I.P smart Registry

Thanks, I can't enter that one into our database because it only has CDN models in it, but it is good to know. There were only about 1000 450s imported to the USA...Hope you had a good settlement from the insurer.

Interesting, I just checked that one yesterday on the VIN checker and it came up as being in Ottawa, I guess the fact that it's been scrapped is not in the Provincial VIN system yet (not that most governments track scrapped cars at all!).

I found a faster and far more efficient way to identify writeoffs: in the VIN site I am searching at, if the car does not generate a record when its VIN is searched upon, it is written off. I have proven this out with a number of checks of known writeoffs that have been posted here and that I had from elsewhere. So, with about 34% of unknown smart VINs checked, there are 164 writeoffs from the about 1/3 of cars checked.....so I will update this with a list of VINs after the final results are in. I guess, by extrapolation, there will be about 550 writeoffs now among the 10,239 cars imported, roughly 5.4% of the total.

The writeoff total with 6167 of 10239 cars accounted for is 261 cars. That's 4.23% of spotted cars, so if this proportion holds, the grand total number of writeoffs will be under 450, not 550 as I conjectured before.

Edit: a smart cdi not being in the National Vehicle database does not necessarily mean that it's been written off, so I will need to do more work before updating this thread. For now, the VINs I posted before have been removed.

Hunh. Just saw our old car today in a car lot on Brunette Ave in New West. It's received "rebuilt" status from ICBC and is being sold again for more than I got when it was written off. I had to stop in for a look - it's a disgrace. The driver's door doesn't match, the tridion below it is wrinkled like a Shar-Pei, assorted other nicks and scrapes are still there on nearly every panel, the sunshield for the panorama roof is missing... but it DOES drive, and rather well too, if I say so myself. VIN 212229 Red 2005 Pulse, black tridion, navy interior, all the usual Pulse options except air.
