joanmdonaldson Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Hi everyone! I am a new member to this club and have a situation where I am experiencing huge frustration with this, my second Smart. My first was a diesel and a dream to drive and my overall experience was wonderful. However, I am wondering if this one is a lemon! It is a 2009 Smartfortwo Coupe and I am having software after software issues. My engine light keeps coming on and causing all kinds of problems. First, it wouldn't go from neutral into reverse. Second issue which is now again happening is that I have no acceleration power after coming to a stop at a light or a stop sign and it lasts even after I am driving on. This is increasingly dangerous as it won't accelerate (has little power) on the highway and now has so little power, that at a stop sign or red light, when I go to accelerate, if I am on an incline or a hill of any kind, it rolls backwards and I have to slam on the breaks lest I roll back into the guy behind me. I have had to turn it off, sit for awhile with my four ways flashing, and then try again. I do have an appointment tomorrow but I checked my records and have had to take it in several times over the past two years for software issues. Has anyone else been experiencing these kinds of issues with their Smart? Please advise! Thanks so much! Feel free to email me directly with your response at joanmdonaldson@hotmail.com Quote
CANMAN Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I have a diesel so I don't know much about the newer cars, but what you are describing sounds similar to the limp mode in the diesels. Is the check engine light on while you don't have any power?Did you read the codes (scan gauge)? How many kilometers?Where are you located?CANMAN Quote
jwight Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Hard to say; you may want to re post over on www.smartcarofamerica.com. A couple of suggestions from that site include disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes or so (computer reboot) as well as checking the battery voltage. Quote
Diemnzz Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Hi thr, I was experience some crazy things with my Smart as well. Since I've had it about 5 months it's been in the shop for all sorts of issues.. Loose panels, dash pop up. Seat belts don't retract. Than last week I was using cruise control and it was like being on a see saw.. The car was goin from one gear to another, it was like a bad ride. Than 2 days later coming home from work and my car just stop moving, no matter how much gas I gave it, it was barley moving. Than all my dash lights came on, even the engine system malfunction light ( very cool). Called dealer they came and towed it. They called me Friday and stated that my accelerator switch was bad. And needed to be replaced. Thank god it's under warranty but I think I have a lemon. 3 car payments I've paid cars been in the shop. No good.. Now I hear from paint issues to windshield an the roof can fly off??? Not good......hope to get my car maybe this week...lol Edited October 23, 2011 by Diemnzz Quote
Leadwing Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Than last week I was using cruise control and it was like being on a see saw.. The car was goin from one gear to another, it was like a bad ride. This can happen when the speed you are cruising at is close to a shift point for the transmission. Depending on the load on the engine, the gearbox will 'hunt' up and down for the correct gear. This is less of an issue if you use the "standard' mode. (ie: you do the shifting instead of letting the car do the shifting automatically) I hope this helps. Quote
MikeT Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I have never had that problem with OE cruise on the 450s I own. Quote
