Your reported highway performance is definitely not normal, perhaps due to your potentially broken exhaust. Were you running in top gear on the highway?

Posted

No I was not lots of times it would be in 5th sounds like the sitting for 5 months really hurt my car. And yes it was operating for 103Km on low oilI'm scared!

The following is not intended to be a smarta$$ remark. Because this car comes with a 6 speed transmission, a lot of new-to-smart drivers don't realize there is a 6th since most standard transmission cars these days come with 5 speeds. Aaron, I know you've had this car for a while now, and this may be redundant, but you do know there are 6 gears in the transmission, right? The car is capable of doing 110kph in 5th but not advisable to do it for long periods of time. Top indicated speed of 140 kph should be reachable in 6th gear on a level highway. My '05 with 152,000+ kms on it does this on a regular basis on hwy 401.

YIKES indeed !! .. 1.2 Litres of oil to "top it up" is a lot. That is more than 1/3rd of the total amount that is supposed to be in there.

If your tank was completely full when you left Wasaga to Newmarket and used ½ a tank, there is something not right. A lot of members who have been reporting their mileage, often mention that when full, the first 'blob' doesn't disappear until you have covered at least 150 kms.

As for your shifting, when in the 'manual' mode, I generally shift at about 2,500 rpm unless I need to accelerate (merge) into freeway traffic. Unless you are in a drag race with someone on a bicycle and want to win, there is no real need to rev the engine higher to get to a comfortable speed. A remap for more torque might help, but might also negatively influence the mileage.

Well Ron I'm having some issues I was going to have u call me tonight around 8 ish anyways to discuss them and your knowledge. More observations. Maybe 1.2L is too much it was right at the min mark and the full stick portion labeled 1L was dryAs for the car I would go up and down slopes on the 400 but like I said as speed dropped inwas unable to maintain or gain acceleration till level ground or another hill. 2500 rpm as a margin is a good reference point thank you Ron. Maybe after my appointments on Tuesday oil change and Mb muffler inspection we can work something out where u come see me and test drive my car. I have Friday off this week Ron Also ABS light and ESP light are on again I'm not concerned about that though and yes Ron I know it's a 6 speed my car is only manual no automatic function Thanks for the info keep it coming guys!!!!

Yes it can and my heater booster was on and there is a huge rattle from my muffler and my car stinks so bad of diesel! Oil change on Tuesday air filter also.Could the muffler breaking explain the lack of acceleration ?

He used it everyday. No issues. I think I'm shifting wrong. He let it sit for 5 months I feel this is where a lot of the problems came fromMike that is not encouraging!!! When my oil change is done and after Mercedes fixes my muffler hopefully under warranty I'll see what happens I just want to enjoy my car. In town yesterday it was a great run about And all the eletronics work mint it's just the engine being sluggish and it stinking like he'llI'm trying to run all the old bad fuel out of it to replace it with some good new stuff and a cetane boost conditioner

I doubt this helps, however with my now sold smart when I was on the 400 or heading to Alliston with that giant hill after Cookstown, I would call it my running leap, hit the hill at 110 km/h and midway up the hill I would be stuck at 70-80 km/h. Doubt it was normal anyways your fuel consumption is horrible, 1/2 should take you to Borden from Toronto and back.Hopefully after your Mercedes visit you will get it sorted out and be a happier smartie :) Work out the bugs from it sitting for five months and all will be good :)Britney, Mathieu and Clover the Rover :D

Full oil change, all fluids topped up, transmission fluid checked, new air filter, new oil cartridge, all done today. Now how do I reset my service monitor ? It's on my screen driving me crazy ?How do i change my car from Ferienhight to Celcious on my dash ? Also I was at Mercedes today (thank you ROBM) they said my cat has fallen off and they are replacing my muffler under my emissions warranty! Good news :) on Friday if I get a loner I'll keep u all posted First fill up today 0-full cost me 18.00 that's exciting!!! And I heard proper operating temperature of the car is 3 circles at 90 degrees Celcious but my car even after warming up only hits 2 circles at 60 degrees Celcious. Is this a concern ? And how do I get it to run at 90 like it should ? Yay !

Move to a warmer country.Or do Tolsens restrictor plug mod.CANMAN

My white car runs at 84 C and the green one at about 76 C in cold weather. The failed catalyst is good news in the sense that it could explain the sluggish road behaviour (due to a clogged exhaust).

Thank god mike u don't hate my car,What's that restrictor plug mod can ?Also we missed how do I reset my service light ?

block off your rad to help it build more heat. i got a dollar store yardsale sign that i cut to size to cover mine up. i cut it into 2 parts so i can block off 1/2 or all the rad by sliding it up under the front license plate. the tolson plug an bypass would be a good cure.

The temperature display should already be in Celcius. I honestly didn't know that it could be changed......

Fordnut, try this method. It always works for me.

• Switch on the ignition to position 1.

• Select maintenance indicator within 4 sec by double tapping the instrument cluster button.

• Switch off the ignition to position 0 (off) within 10 sec.

• Push and hold in the instrument cluster button and switch ignition on.

• Hold the instrument cluster button for another 10sec.

• In that time, the spanner symbol on the LCD will flash and eventually reset.

If that doesn't work (it should) try this

• Switch on the ignition to position 1.

• Select maintenance indicator within 4 sec by double tapping the instrument cluster button,

keep it held down on the second press.

• Switch of the ignition to position 0 (off) within 10 sec.

• Switch ignition on.

• Keep the instrument cluster button held down for another 10sec.

In that time, the spanner symbol on the LCD will flash and eventually reset

or you can go here for a video to guide you through the process.

If the car sat for five months it was possibly full of summer diesel. Your second tank should be much better. Check that your tires are running at full pressure, under inflated tires really hurt the milage of the smart. I have noticed that if I don't get the engine cover on just right I get a lot of fumes into the cabin area, check that the cover is under the two front tabs on the forward edge of the engine access opening. Do not ever over fill your oil. Most smart enthusiasts run at 2/3 up the dipstick, over filling is very bad for a smart CDI. All the best, Alanedit: corrected finger trouble
